Am I the only one listening to fireworks and hating it?

Young babies and children, people with PTSD or other mental illness or dementia, in hospice or with other chronic illness who need their sleep. As well as the pets. A normal middle class family should not be able to afford a 25 minute show (like multiple neighbors before July 4, on different nights). They should tax them heavily so we're back to more reasonable amounts.
In my opinion the big ones shouldn't even be sold to anyone without a valid license.

We had live bands until about 10, fireworks until after 1:30 am, and sporadic gunfire throughout the evening. Not kidding on the gunfire; at least 30-50 mag dumps.
Tucson was on my list of places to visit with the thought of possibly moving. Not anymore.

i'm far enough north of Houston where the News Years eve bullets won't reach us.

Fortunately, it is 1x per year. We live on the outskirts of town and all of the open desert encourages the "gun play" I would think. It wasn't nearly as loud on the 4th of July! Reading the Tucson message boards, fireworks were everywhere last night but the gun stuff wasn't so present in town.

Fireworks are legal in my state a couple weeks a year, this being one of them.

No apparent enforcement of people who set off the wrong kind on the wrong day either.

Kind of maddening to hear intermittent blasts for hours at a time.

Am I just a grump? Are they going off where you are right now?

I'm too old to lack this much sleep in a week when I'm not even having fun!
Try calling your local PD or sheriff when illegal use of fireworks is occuring.

I have a fireworks-happy neighbor across the lake. Fireworks are legal in my state (MO) and he didn't go overboard at midnight last night but he's a HUGE Chiefs fan and goes all-out for the 4th of July. The two times the Chiefs won the Superbowl I didn't have to check the score on the Internet. I heard the fireworks. Apparently that's legal but he always starts setting off fireworks a day or two before they're allowed for July 4. Fortunately he DOES Stop around 10 and I don't have a pet or any condition that would make them particularly bothersome.

I agree with aaronc- the big ones should not be legal. When I visit my grandchildren in nice weather I stop on the way up and buy fireworks. They don't like noise and I don't like anything that can end up on a roof so I buy the really tame stuff- sparklers, little poppers that explode when thrown on cement, and ground works that look like flowers, bees, etc. I light everything myself and they're allowed to hold throw poppers and hold the sparklers but just stand far away for the ground works.

Anyway- yeah, the stuff in the stores could blow up a normal-sized house and they have packages selling for hundreds of dollars. I don't get it.

When I lived in my house people would set them off for hours on end. My big rescue dog was scared. I would put on the bedroom tv to help drown out the noise and he would lay in the bathroom attached to it because it was quieter there. I would run a fan at night to help muffle the sound. Now in my condo I can’t hear them.

Ha! That’s funny.
I’ve done that- response was that there were so many people setting off illegal fireworks that they couldn’t keep up.
And I’m talking about residential neighborhoods with the type that explode or shoot up into the air and lands wherever.
People have lost their homes because of these pyromaniacs - heavy on maniac- obsession. Our drought years made them even more dangerous.

My father was a pilot during WWII and had to fly through flak exploding all around him. People either don't understand or don't care about the trauma he and so many others have/had to endure with PTSD. I thought people were appreciative of our retired military people. They could use some consideration. It also terrorizes so many animals both domestic and wild.
At least stop allowing the sale of fireworks by individuals.
I'm always glad when there are a few days of rain during New Years and 4th of July.

I slept through it this year. It was raining. Hopefully there weren't any. I feel so sorry for the wildlife, particularly the birds roosting in the trees near where the fireworks are set off. I wish people would be happy with the town's fireworks.

My dad was a combat veteran in Korea. Army Infantry.

In his later years he moved off the farm into an apartment in a small town. The first year he was there the kids started shooting off fireworks around the 4th. He hid under the bed, he thought we were being shelled.

What a horrific story. I can’t even imagine.
The number of deaths is unusual locally, but the number of significant injuries locally is not unusual. Having said that, death by firew*rks does happen every few years on Island. But EVERY year (at New Year, at July 4th, at Chinese New Year) we have lots of firew*rks injuries. It IS horrific. I'd invoke the Darwin Awards, but it's not at all funny - especially this incident which likely will alter many, many lives for ever. People here on Island are just sick about this.

Let me say just this one thing about the impact of this horrific incident. I've spent 20+ New Years on Oahu. In all that time, the firew*rks have gone on (and on) for a week or more AFTER New Years Eve. It's kinda random but it ALWAYS happens that several "left-over" areals and huge fire crackers will go off each night for at least a week. I mean EVERY year.

Last night, I didn't hear a single explosion. NOT ONE! Have we turned a corner? I wonder. I hope so. Please, God, I hope so.

People have short memories, especially the ones with not too many working brain cells. The next celebration will be with fireworks, unless the local officials prohibit sales of them.

Obviously no one here is a combat veteran. Hear all the stories about noise and pollution and dogs and cats being scared when fireworks go off.

Anybody ever consider you might have some veterans living nearby that have PTSD and fireworks are their worst enemy you could say.

Not complaining about the fireworks but just consider the vets.

Thanks.

I used to have a Vietnam vet that lived next door. He used to flip out when he heard loud noises.

Absolutely despise the inconsiderate law breakers and only wish them the worst life has to offer. Why do we bother having laws when they’re laughed at and not enforced? So much unnecessary damages so you can make a boom boom noise. It should be embarrassing. Sorry you’re too lazy to go view a professional display which just makes you sorry people in general.

I admit that I have always really enjoyed a professionally done fireworks display (that doesn't go on too long). That said, I'm in Honolulu now and the tragedy just makes me think NONE of it is worth it. And when I think of our veterans (and others) with PTSD...just not worth it one bit. (Not to mention so many of our poor dogs bothered by them so much.) So, nope, not worth it to me anymore.

Fireworks are legal in Indiana unless locally restricted (hah!) EVERY day from 9am to 11pm, and later times June 29 to July 9, plus New Year's Eve. On those special days, localities are not allowed to restrict them. I couldn't believe it!

Fortunately, our dog, who doesn't like most sudden noises, doesn't seem to mind them if they're not too close.

I feel pretty fortunate as they aren’t much of a nuisance where I live. They aren’t legal in my town but you only have to go a few towns over to buy them which is surprising since so much of California is a tinder box. I do see on Nextdoor that they are a problem in some neighborhoods not too far away. Sometimes around July 4th I’ll hear them in the distance but not enough to rattle the dogs.

My town and others around me do have have pretty good official firework shows for July 4th.
