AMLP versus EPD

I believe EPD issues a K-1, so if you were only buying a small position it might not be worth the bother of tracking the form when it comes tax season. AMLP did a reverse split some years ago and never recovered its original price, but a lot of companies in the industry had depressed earnings or losses.

I do think one should own some energy, but I don't have a strong opinion about these either way. I have owned some MLPs in the past but not at this time. I think the number of MLPs have dropped as some have restructured into C-corps after changes in tax laws some years ago. I have not followed that development closely or what impact it may have had on ETFs like AMLP.

EPD is the best of the lot (of MLPs) and odds are it won't become a C corp anytime soon since the founding family of Enterprise Products (daughter of Dan Duncan is surviving) own a huge amount of units. I owned several thousand units for 15 years and sold it off a couple of years ago. I now have a position in ET which has done quite well in the last 3 years.

Either is good, and will issue a K-1 which is easily handled with any one of the tax prep software packages out there. Buy it in a taxable account.
