Life's curve balls have us considering a move to Brooklyn, NY. We lived there for a couple years around 2014 or so and were both on active duty at the time so state income tax was irrelevant. Recently we discovered that our military pensions and TSP distributions are all exempt from NY state income tax. It turns out that sales tax there is less than here in WA also. Of course property taxes are higher, but there is a partial exemption for that as well.

We would downsize for the move...just sell all the excess stuff. It's not a lot with our 1400sqft home, but we'd go for a one bedroom condo/co-op and refocus to enjoying the city culture of plays, shows, museums, etc. that we started to enjoy before.

I'm interested in anyone's experience as a retiree in Brooklyn (or other borough), especially if you moved there for retirement.
Thanks!
