Anyone else having login.gov issues with ssa.gov?

A few months ago I set up a login.gov account after much effort and physical mail and made sure it was working. I tried to sign on to ssa.gov yesterday and now apparently my login.gov is messed up and I need to go in person to have them verify my ID. This is frustrating as I already went through all this. Has anyone else had any problems like this?

I've not had any issues using my login.gov account. I just re-verified that by signing into my ssa.gov account.

What is "messed up" with your login.gov account? Can you sign into login.gov's website (your login.gov account)?

Several years ago I set up my online SSA account, and I was always able to sign onto the site using any browser I chose.

Starting about three weeks ago I got an error message every time I tried to sign onto the site using my default browser (Chrome).

I am able to sign onto the site using Firefox, but not Chrome. So, I use Chrome for 99.9% of what I do, and I use Firefox for SSA.gov. Very annoying, but at least I can access the site.

Have you tried using a different browser? I don't know if it will work for you, but it's worth a shot before you traipse off to an understaffed local office and wait in an interminable line for help.

It is asking for the whole process to be redone, picture of license, picture of yourself, phone, I already did all this recently. Now it is saying go in person.

I also wonder if you are confusing login.gov with id.me?

Can you go to login.gov and sign into your account? Take ssa.gov out of the picture for a minute.

irs.gov only uses id.me.
ssa.gov can use either login.gov or id.me

Just tried with Chrome (usually use Firefox) and same thing, prompting me to go through the whole 9 yards with login.gov. I am not confusing it with id.me.

I am signed up for login.gov, it works fine and I didn't need pictures and all that. . . that sounds more like id.me. . . but in any case try a different browser first. Do you not get the 2fa code?
Yes it does the 2FA and that works.

So it sounds like the problem is not your login.gov account. It sounds like a problem with Social Security's systems. That's why I was asking if you could log in at login.gov's website to see your account there. It sounds like login.gov is doing its part correctly and validating you.

Still a problem, I get it. If you're being told you have to come into a Social Security office, I suspect that is what you will have to do.

login.gov acts like I never set up an account at all, SS will not let me sign up with sign-on and password because I already signed on once with login.gov.

You indicated in post #9 "Yes it does the 2FA and that works". That would indicate login.gov knows you set up an account.

They know because I sign on with my login.gov password, but it acts like I need to do all the steps again as though I didn't already go through all this when I set it up the first time.

@jim584672,

I empathize; this must be incredibly frustrating for you.

I am confused by all the steps it's asking you to follow for login.gov. I originally set up my SSA online account years go using the old "username and password" setup.

A few weeks ago I decided I should finally create a login.gov account, because the SSA website kept prompting me to do so, stating that they were going to "transition away from the old username and password" system of signing in any day now.

I had been putting it off because I expected the login.gov process to be somewhat onerous (pictures, license, etc. etc.) To my surprise, it took me about 3 minutes to set up the login.gov credentials. All I had to do was answer a few questions online and give them my phone number. They sent me the 2FA code, and bingo - I was verified. It never asked for any photos of any kind. I will mention that I don't use the login.gov credentials anywhere else; just on the SSA site.

You mentioned that setting up the original login.gov account was difficult, and apparently involved mailing back-and-forth. Without getting personal, were there circumstances that made your original setup tricky? Maybe a name change, or something along those lines? I'm not asking you to share details, but maybe your current difficulty is happening because the SSA folks unintentionally missed something at their end along the way.

Goodness knows the SSA staff is being put through the wringer right now, and dealing with staff cuts and stress that's off the charts. I realize that doesn't help you to feel better, or lower your frustration with the situation, but maybe something slipped through the cracks. I do hope you are able to resolve this without having to go to a local office in-person, because I imagine that would be time-consuming.

One final thought - when you request the 2FA code, are you sure that you are using the same email or phone number that you used when you set up the login.gov account? If not, that might be why they can't verify you when you sign in. Just a thought.

Best of luck, and I wish you a speedy resolution!

A couple of days ago, when I encountered people at a couple of websites saying they were being blocked from using login dot gov to sign into their SSA accounts, I decided to try it myself. It blocked me and said it needed verification. The verification, however, was the same steps I used to originally setup my login dot gov account. Only, this time, I had trouble with the photo match part of the setup but, right before my last chance, it approved the match. After success, I tried it at another government website and it asked if I wanted to share the information I just used at SSA. So I only had to do it once.

When I tried ID dot me to login at IRS, there was no challenge and it logged me in. I tried it at another government site and, again, no challenge. I don't know whether login dot gov shared my successful information with ID dot me or whether I face an ID dot me challenge shortly.

I don't know the criterion for the challenge but many people are having this problem. Some have long established previous accounts but some have semi-recently established accounts so it doesn't appear to be a renewal of old information.

I experienced the same issue with login.gov requiring me to re-identify myself although I have been using both login.gov and id.me for well over a year including to access my SSA account. Identification kept failing on the step to identify my long term phone number. I only have two and one has been in use for over 33 years but no joy. I left on my 5 week vacation after giving it a big f it as I don't care immediately as long as my SS payments keep rolling in. Looks like a trip to the local Post Office will be required to ID in person at some point.

Fortunately my login.gov still accesses my VA account and Trusted Traveler among others.

This sounds like my situation. Looks like a PO visit is in order next.

I had no problem with it just now. I remember it being a bit of a PITA to setup when they started it. It was built by my former agency after I retired so I apologize on their behalf if they messed up. ;)

I just used login.gov to set up TY 2025 estimated payments. I had no problems. It did take awhile to set up the account originally. I had to wait for them to snail mail me a 4 digit pin after I signed up. I also have an IDme account, but usually use login.gov. Haven't tried to login for SSA this year. Don't need to.

Was that for EFTPS? I have heard they always require a pin (nothing to do with login.gov) but IDK for sure if that is so or not since I've never done it.

I would setup an appointment at a local SS office ASAP to confirm your identity. I have read the bad guys are using AI to steal identities to collect SS checks.
