Anyone else Worried About Canceled Europe Flights?

Anyone else worried like myself about airlines canceling flights in Europe over the lack of jet fuel because of the war? Noticed tonight that Lufthansa Airlines is canceling 20k flights over the summer because of it. Unfortunately I have a Milan to Frankfurt flight on Lufthansa on our way home to SFO next month. If things get crazy with canceled flights I wonder who pays for all the costs I've already laid out such as hotels. Me I'm sure.

I'm not worried. There's a train you can take between Milan and Frankfurt if needed. Also, flights between those cities must be common, so even if yours is cancelled, you have good odds on getting rebooked on a different flight.

I mentioned in another thread, DD's flight to Europe was canceled (Swiss) and she was rebooked on Lufthansa with no issues.

There might be issues in Europe with domestic flights, but with airline regulation, I suspect at most you'll be delayed with some inconvenience (worst case).

Just look at it as an adventure. If you're not in a hurry, then you can easily find alternatives and eventually you'll get home.

I'm flying in June. Delta for the long-haul parts, Air France and Easyjet in Europe. The latter is more of a concern, but I can always take a 12 hour train vs 1 hour flight to make it work. Although not ideal, I'm not in hurry and if it happens, I'll make the best of it.

I guess we hope to make it to Europe and then have one short mid-May flight. After that I guess we’ll just deal with whatever happens. ✊ ✊ 🪵

Year 2026 is a rare year that we did not plan an international trip. I am still curious and concerned how things will work out. If Europe runs out of jet fuel, I would think Asia would be worse.

I'm not worried. I have several short hops in Europe scheduled over the summer. I'm currently in New Zealand. Many flights cancelled here -- but all short flights and replaced with bus service with a delay of about an hour on arrival. Headline number for flights cancelled is large. Impact is very small to the traveller.

I’m sitting in Frankfort Airport right now, waiting to board our United flight back to EWR, after arriving a couple hours ago from Bucharest on a Lufthansa flight. We are returning from a Viking River cruise and had absolutely no issues with air arrangements and transfers, especially in light of an announced Lufthansa Pilots 2-day “strike” that was taking place the day we arrived in Europe in Vienna. No problems at all. My biggest concern would be the price of future flights if you haven’t booked/ paid yet due to the increased fuel costs the airlines are all bearing.
Enjoy your trip!

Flying to Asia in a few days. Yes, I’ve thought about the risk that flights could be cancelled and consolidated. But, that is low on my list of worries.

We will need to fly from Frankfurt to Sofia in May and from Bucharest to Paris in early June. These few hour flights will take 30->40hrs by train or Flix bus according to Google, so the alternatives are a bit messy for us. This could be some extra unplanned adventures for us (that I hope won't be happening).

I was just looking into this for our June, direct flight to / from Zurich. I came to the same conclusion that it'll be more about local flights. Hoping so, at least.

Gas for the rental is looking ominous @$9/gal though... BTD!

Have seen some reports yes. I just hope for the best. Not expecting any big issues but we will see and adjust from there. Heading off next month.

Agree, our flights which we bought prior to the war are now twice as expensive as what we paid and our flights are still a month out. I'm guessing the planes will be a little less full, noticed our flight to Vienna is still only half full. Always nice to have that center seat empty on long haul flights though.

We're less than two weeks from our 16 day vacation in the UK. Hopefully there will be no disruptions to our non-stop PHX to LHR flight and return. I'm glad we're doing the trip in May as opposed to a month or two later!

Got a trip in June connecting through FRA to another European country on Lufthansa. I booked the whole way on United, so I'm hoping that helps with the connecting flight. If that one gets canceled, I'm thinking United should be able to help re-book me.

Not worried about the transatlantic legs of my upcoming trip in June but I am a bit concerned about the short-haul domestic legs here in the US. I also have a short leg from Oslo to London but if we get stuck in Norway I won't be too sad. FIRE gives one a lot of flexibility. OTOH, we have another trip in October from the east coast to take the Canyon Spirit train from SLC to DEN, and I'm hoping they don't cancel any of those flights. I went ahead and booked those this morning since I figure the price can only go up, or at the least be very uncertain.

No, not me. Been there, done that, and I'm not going back.

We are avoiding Europe like the plague this year. I'm not flying anywhere near the stuff going on that way. Flights being cancelled due to fuel is just another headache.

Interesting, Thanks for that info. Upon further reading it is still only being used in less than 1% of total Jet fuel consumption and it is almost always mixed with regular jet fuel (not 100% SAF). The disturbing fact was that it costs 2-5x more than traditional jet fuel. Not sure how quickly it will be widely adopted until the availability/ supply is increased and the price can be lowered.

My JetBlue flight back from Europe for mid May is still showing available at the same price I paid months ago. Ho Hum.

Have a trip to Europe in a few weeks so of course I am concerned. Hoping rising prices might scare away a whole bunch of people so it won’t be so crowded!

I’ve been in Europe for 3 weeks, flying home to the U.S. this weekend. Not concerned at all.
