Does anyone here have ONE SHARE insurance coverage? I got a very attractive quote from One Share. It's $400 a month less than what I am paying to Kaiser Permanente. I pay for health insurance entirely out of pocket. Not eligible for any assistance from ACA, etc.

The deductible with One Share is $10,000 a year which I am fine with because I rarely use medical services.

My worry is what does the One Share member identity card look like? Does it mention First Health anywhere on the card? I am asking this because I called a hospital (mentioned by the agent as one "in network" for my membership with One Share) and asked the hospital if it accepts One Share insurance and the hospital said "I don't think so." I then asked if they accept First Health, and the hospital said Yes.

The agent who is trying to sell me the One Share insurance coverage said that One Share is affiliated with First Health. And that as a One Share member, I get to use the First Health PPO network of providers.

I hope someone on this Forum is a member of One Share and can help shed light on this. If you have One Share, have you used the doctor, Urgent Care, hospital or any specialist etc. yet? How was your experience?

Thank you for any information you can share on this.

It is not real insurance. You hope they'll pay if you have a real catastrophic health problem. For me, insuring against a cost that I cannot afford is the only reason for insurance.

Did you see this on their website:

ONESHARE HEALTH, LLC (ONESHARE) IS NOT AN INSURANCE COMPANY BUT A RELIGIOUS HEALTH CARE SHARING MINISTRY (HCSM) THAT FACILITATES THE SHARING OF MEDICAL EXPENSES AMONG MEMBERS. As with all HCSMs under 26 USC § 5000A(d)(2)(B)(ii), OneShare’s members are exempt from the ACA individual mandate. OneShare does not assume any legal risk or obligation for payment of member medical expenses. Neither OneShare nor its members guarantee or promise that medical bills will be paid or shared by the membership. Available nationwide, but please check www.onesharehealth.com/legal-notices for the most up to date state availability listing.

You referred to it as "insurance", so I wanted to make sure you know it's not.

I don't understand what it is the $400/month is supposed to be for, but obviously, whatever it's for, is not health care.

It's for their expenses (i.e. salaries) in providing the service of not guaranteeing coverage.

These faith-based (and similar) alternatives exist simply to skirt the ACA mandates. They readily cover "cheap" things like office/wellness visits, and routine medical procedures. However, get diagnosed with cancer or something else which could go in to the $1 million+ range and watch how difficult it is to get a claim paid.

Folks always get enticed convincing themselves it will work for them, not because it will, but because they want it to, thinking they will be saving money. These plans are all very similar.

Because of the way they are structured, they are required to make their financial statements publicly available - go review them and you'll quickly see how thinly financed they are...they cannot afford to pay out large claims.

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler ordered OneShare Health LLC to stop selling illegally in Washington state, effective immediately.

OneShare Health markets itself as a health care sharing ministry but fails to meet the legal definition under state law. It has nearly 1,100 members in the state who paid $1.2 million in premiums. Four members complained to Kreidler’s office about unpaid claims and attempts to cancel coverage.

“This is another sham health care sharing ministry that is preying on people who think they are buying health insurance,” said Kreidler. “The reality is that they are collecting hundreds of dollars a month from people and, in some cases, saddling them with 100% of their medical bills.”

OneShare Health LLC previously did business in Washington state using the names Kingdom HealthShare Ministries LLC and Unity Healthshare LLC.

From 2016 to 2018, OneShare Health’s insurance policies were sold by Aliera Healthcare Inc., which illegally acted as an insurance producer and an unregistered health care service contractor in Washington state. Kreidler ordered Aliera to stop doing business in Washington state and is seeking to fine the company $1 million pending the outcome of a hearing.

In addition if they are not an Insurance company do you get a negotiated rate for all those expenses you incur before your max out of pocket? Over the years that has been the greatest value I've seen with traditional high deductible plans.

No, you are instructed to go and beg for a discount since you don't have insurance.
