Apple iPhone SE 2022

Maybe it will work better now, I believe that Apple upgraded the face recognition to work with masks(!)

That feature only works with iPhone 12 and newer.

I have a 12 and unless I’m missing something, face recognition doesn’t work with a mask. If I have a mask on, all it does is defaults to the password entry screen. Is there a setting I’m missing?

Sounds like you haven't yet done the update to iOS 15.4?

Yep, that’s it. I’m in automatic updates, but it did not ping me yet to update. I can do it manually. I’ll mess with it later. Hopefully it will not matter. We pretty much don’t wear a mask anymore. Probably won’t unless we get another surge.

When you do it, it will prod you to set up the feature.
I found it interesting that you don't have to be wearing a mask to do it. The procedure simply concentrates on the area around your eyes, so you can use it with any kind of mask. If you sometimes wear glasses, you'll have to do it twice, once with and once without. The whole process takes only about a minute.

I finally received my SE that I ordered on March 11 (!).

Not what you might think. It was a “comedy” of errors that involved an unexpected trip to the hospital on March 17 for me that lasted a month. First missed delivery on March 18 and that’s on me.

Subsequent attempts just kept getting delayed. But it’s here now so frustration over. [emoji4]

[ADDED] One happy note is that in the interim Apple increased their trade-in values and I got the extra. This applies to everyone (through May, I think).

Hope you are OK!

Thank you! I’m fortunate to live in an area (University of North Carolina) with very good health care. It helps too that March blizzards are not likely (unlike my native Midwest!). It’s not a coincidence that such matters factor in to people planning for retirement (early or not).

The iPhone did not arrive by ambulance. It seems unscathed. Now to find out whether we really DO have 5G coverage around here. :)

I had a followup appointment at UNC hospital yesterday and made sure to take the new SE with me. I was hoping it would pick up 5G coverage closer to town (I don’t get it near my home which is a bit south. You could say I live in “the southern part of the southern part of heaven”).

No 5G for me. A little bit of disappointment although that agrees with the cell coverage maps now shown by the Speedtest app.

Still excited by the new gadget though. :)

I have a 2020 SE and am very happy with it. After my iPhone 7's cell radio died an early death, I decided I would not longer spend $700+ for a phone that would not last more than three years. So far the SE is fine, and it won't hurt as much if it fails sooner than later.

Oh, the 7 works great on Wifi so I can still use it at home. Mostly, it has become an iPod Touch. I use it for music, podcasts, etc. But, I can still answer calls on it since those are hooked in via the SE-2020.

I especially liked that my SE fits the Otterbox case I used with my iPhone 8 perfectly. One less expense! [emoji4]

[ADDED] Apple offered to send me a free case because my SE order was delayed so long but I declined and they sent me a free charger instead. Makes me a happy customer.

I’m probably going to move from my iPhone 8 to a regular iPhone 13 (and not the mini). I’m having trouble with the small screen on some of my Apps (including Apple messages), and tired of it. I guess I’ll have to get used to Face ID, but the souped up camera with multiple lenses will be nice.

You could hang in there and wait for the 14. The small screens can get pretty small, I agree (I still love and use my iTouch though).

These aging eyes were also suffering from that, so last year I took the plunge and got a 13 Pro Max. Biggest screen and best camera of any iPhone, and I love it. I was a bit surprised that the actual physical form factor still fits easily in my shirt pocket, the extra weight isn't really notciceable, and the increased screen real estate makes a world of difference. I won't go back to a smaller screen.

A big part of the small screen problem is that so many things pop up (keyboard, other entry fields) and cover the main part of the screen that you can’t see what you are doing, or can’t enter info in some fields because they are overlapping others, or can’t move a map view, or whatever.

IMO people have stopped testing their user interfaces on the small screen phones.

It’s not my eyes.

Also, if you have big fingers pressing the right part of the screen to respond to a prompt can be a problem.

Face ID works great. I remember when it was first introduced, I thought why, since I was happy with Touch ID. But it’s (mostly) worked seamlessly for me.

I’ve thought about getting a Max, but it’s too big. DS got one and is looking forward to downgrading to the smaller pro version. I’m pretty sure I’d feel the same way.

I found I was wrong about 5G coverage in my area: it IS here. Good news although it doesn’t seem to be as blindingly fast as marketing would have you believe, but still better than LTE as measured by Speedtest.

I reviewed the various options related to 5G (on iPhone) and think the default setting (5G Auto) will be best for me.

Everything I've read about 5G speed suggests there is a huge difference related to how close you are to one of the towers. So the auto setting should be best for nearly everyone.

OK - I was finally pushed over the edge. I ordered an iPhone 13 today.

I had been having trouble with my smaller screen not working properly with several apps lately, including Apple Messages, plus awkward when using some mapping apps.

The last straw was the Tesla app not scrolling down properly to give me access to some critical buttons. Fortunately I had my iPad mini with me and was able to use the app on it to enable a couple of critical features.

The issues among some of these apps are similar (not scrolling properly is common) so I suspect it’s Apple no longer handling the smallest screens properly, or perhaps a combination.

Plus on some apps: with the keyboard up and some entry field up to enter info, you only have a tiny square to show a map.

I’m looking forward to see what 5G does. According to the latest maps it’s all around us.

I finally figured out my screen real estate problem!:facepalm:

I showed the terrible Apple maps interface to DH this morning, and he asked me if text size was set to max. It sure was, setting it smaller fixed the user interface issues. I’d been complaining about these UI problems for months and showed him other examples, but this morning was the first he mentioned it.

The thing is, I don't remember ever setting text size to max. It must have happened during one of my updates. I’ve had settings change due to updates before.

And my new iPhone 13 arrived yesterday!

I’m still going to switch to it because I’m ready to move on to the new capabilities plus a larger screen…..

So advice - check your text size if you are having iPhone user interface problems.

Perfectly normal. Sounds just like when I find something I thought I had lost, immediately after buying a replacement.

I consider this iPhone UI issue an Apple bug. Just because the text is a set to large shouldn’t cause scrolling to work improperly. I ran into issues with several apps where I was unable to scroll all the way to the bottom of the display to push an important button! Scrolling would stop short.

On my SE I had the same problem with trying to BCC on a forwarded email. The work around was to press + rather than type in the start of the recipient in the BCC field. Very irritating. But I like the small form factor for my pocket.
