Are you getting tired of the internet yet?

I remember when Excel and its abilities first came on the market. Departments loved it and used it for almost everything they could think of in business. People who had very little computer experince became experts in their departments if they could show others how to use it, find uses for it and write macros for it.

As time went on, all these uses were reduced to realistically needed and relative importance of Excel was put into perspective. I belive that this is the lifecycle of most programs. I also belive this will be the lifecycle for the internet.

I use the internet for:
Finances - banking, credit cards, etc
Some purchase
Some forums
email
Research
News
I do not use it for entertainment - things like - games; movies; music.

But I am getting a bit tired of the internet and using it less and less.

Are you finding you are using the internet less over time?

I use it for all the reasons you use it. It is a quick escape for me at work too.(dont tell the boss) I can't say I am tired of it yet. A great source of information right at your finger tips.

I get tired of driving too, but I have not given up my car. 8)

It's just a source of information just like the library was in its hay day and to a lesser degree now.

I'll get to the point that I get tired or bored with the internet, and go find something to do, but I don't think it's something that will ever fade out of my life. I never was the type that spent all day on it either, though.

Not a chance. While I may occasionally get tired if I've been online too long, I certainly like the internet and use it daily, while I'm home. I probably should get a cheap laptop to take on trips, because I miss it (a little) if I'm gone too long. On the other hand, the boss I had at Mega-Corp had to check everything daily (hourly?) while he was on vacation. I'm not hooked like that!

Dex - I find that I've gotten weary of TV. Lately when I do watch sports, I'll turn the sound off and do the Internet...I also cook while doing it....someday with practice I'll be able to read books and magazines while I Internet. I can think of some other things I could do too...I guess I'm not tired of it yet....

I think I am close to a point where I could go without TV, but not the Internet. I usually only watch TV if nothing else is going on.
My only regular programs are nightly news and Seinfeld reruns.
OTOH, I can imagine a life without either. There is entertainment
all around (a lot of it free) if you know where to look.

Much of my internet use is for my job.  Part of is involves searching for business and regulatory information so I am on it many times during the day.  I just drop by a forum or two on the way to somewhere else and between meetings and email.

I have been on some form of computer BBS since 1983 back in the days when a 9600 kbs modem was cutting edge.  Back then the internet was truly a closed shop unless you were in the network of companies or govt. agencies that knew how to connect to each other.  Otherwise, it was mostly just point to point via modem.

The internet has been my window on the world for many years.  I have a WiFi at home and use my laptop to check email and to look up things as needed.  It is nice to look up an exotic drink and read the receipe while in the kitchen or to check on the status of an order your wife made for some clothes she shopped for an bought that will be delivered to your own front door.  I have done about 90% of my Christmas and other shopping on the internet for many many years and enjoy the ability to shop on my terms and in my jammies if I wish.  

The only part I truly dislike is the email spamming that seems to get worse each day.  I have the latest and greatest firewalls, de-spamers, de-popuppers, de-spywares and virus protection program and I hate having to do that to keep my computer safe from these freaks.  But other than that, I am mostly happy with the services and information I can obtain in a flash.

Right now we treat the internet much like the early days of radio. There is a space in the house reserved for this wondrous machine, and we make a point of going to it to use it. But the day will come when just about everything will be hooked up to it, voice activation/recognition/biometrics will be flawless, and it will become ubiquitous yet unseen. Just think, your car will constantly update optimum traffic routes to and from home, drive you itself, the house will get ready for you and open the door as you walk up. Food will be monitored and replenished as needed, your scale will update your home gym to modify your workout as needed. Meanwhile all this information will be uploaded to skynet for behavior pattern modeling so the hive mind can recognize if you are deviating from approved....uh, nevermind.

Yes and no.

Overall, spending less time on the web. Novelty wearing off. I do less surfing and go to fewer sites, but spend more time there (maybe you noticed?).

I don't like reading the fluorescent screen. If possible, I generally print out something I want to read carefully.

On the road, as I am, the web is more interesting than TV and I do my finances on-line. When I am home, not much of TV or web.

At first I printed longer pieces that I wanted to read. Now with a good LCD screen, I feel as natural reading here as I would reading a newspaper, which I now get only electronically.

I use a Swiss exercise ball as my seat, which seems to avoid some of the musculoskeletal problems of sitting in one place.

Internet is amazing to me. It is like the NY Public Library- while I might get tired of reading a certain genre of book, I am never going to get tired of the resource that is the library.

Also, there is only one NYPL, and you must be in New York to use it easily. But the internet is essentially everywhere.

I surf out of boredom at times (class can be a drag haha) but it is still pretty incredible to me at least. I am an information seeker by nature & I can find just about anything I want.

I agree! With all of the talk lately in a lot of blogs, of how much better off we'd be with Mr. Gore as President. I am sure he is enjoying his morning coffee with the internet.

I think I'm tiring of the "entertainment" aspects, but I use it for finance and business, and all the practical things others have mentioned. I do get tired of looking at a screen sometimes, but I love the fact that I can surf while watching tv with my wireless dsl. I actually watch more tv now, because I used to get bored with sitting in front of the tube.

I think what is most addictive for me, is the instant access to any particular piece of information I might want at any time of the day or night. Some of it is probably useless, but I love the fact that it's THERE.

Before the internet, before the internet, I actually had to go to the library to look up something I wanted to know. How archaic does THAT seem??

That's what does it for me. It's a research tool. I can dig as deeply as I want into just about any subject (although you still have to pay for a lot of the "real" research). I can't imagine that I'll ever want to stop learning, and I imagine that both the depth and breadth of available information will continue to increase. The net is, and has always been, the Great Democratizer.

Your last point is a big one. I am lucky if I see my sons once every couple of weeks, but I IM with them on and off all day many days. Very often, my last act of the day is to say goodnight to one or both of them. My Dad and I didn't have this possibility. One of my sons is in China now, but I still get to talk with him and hear about what he is doing.
