Just found this forum...I am hoping that since this is a forum composed of somewhat educated people, we can discuss and not bash others etc...Like I find on just about any forum. Anyhow, I am looking forward to this forum and community..... Jim

Welcome. I'm moving to the Tucson area in a few weeks. I think you will find that there is a pretty good group of people on this forum. We don't always agree, but things are generally pretty cordial.

Tucson is a wonderful city. I live about 30 miles south of Tucson and enjoy the flavor of a blend of latin and North American culture. .... Glad to hear about how cordial this forum can be. I look forward to it. Thanks for the reply and welcome,

Tucson is so beautiful. I just love the Sonoran desert. Was spectacular last April with the ocotillos in bloom. But I don’t know about that summer heat! Must be intense.

Welcome to the forum
I grew up in southern Arizona, Willcox, Bisbee, Tombstone
So did my parents and grandparents and huge family.
I was so glad to leave.
To each their own.
Still, welcome.

Welcome! AZ native, grew up in the west Valley, Arizona grad. Great memories, and my time in Tucson as an undergrad where among the most important years of my life.

Lot of changes since I moved to Florida in 1998. Close friends and family still there. It's remains a beautiful place, and I feel at home when I visit.

Tucson here: welcome to Arizona! As far as the summer heat....yep, hot. Beautiful in the mornings and it cools quickly after sunset (not Phoenix, however).

Native of AZ here. Born at Williams AFB-near Chandler and lived in Tempe for junior hs, hs, and undergrad (ASU)...have also lived in Tucson twice...now in FL near my Dad, but still love and yearn at times for Sonora Desert and good Mexican food! And the southwest desert mountains and cacti....

The cooling off and early mornings must be great.

It gets super hot here in the summer afternoons, but not as hot as AZ. We are semi-arid, but do get some coastal humidity during the night. The humidity drops significantly in the afternoon, but not nearly as low humidity as AZ which to me takes some serious getting used to. Unfortunately on the other hand we don’t cool off as much overnight.

We visited south-east Arizona one August on a group birding trip because that was the best time to see all the hummingbirds. It was a fantastic trip but it did get hot in the afternoons! I think the tour managed to go to higher altitudes mid-day thru afternoon so that helped. Worst chiggers I ever experienced, and that’s saying something because chiggers can be really bad here! (TX lower Rio Grande Valley)

For grasshopper we spent a few days in his gorgeous Chiricahua Mountains based in Portal and exploring the sky islands during the day. Just stunning!

Tucson: where there is an excellent chance that your nextdoor neighbor is going to have a better fireworks display then most townships (I am not kidding)

Welcome. The dialogue here tends to be quite reasonable … and when it’s not the mods do a nice job of curtailing it.

My place on the east slope is still the most reliable spot to see Lucifer hummingbirds, besides Ash Canyon.

Welcome to the forum Jim. I hope you enjoy your time here. One of my children has lived in Arizona for the last several years.

Our Community Rules address the decorum expected of members, although from time to time a gentle reminder may be needed.

Ah, Willy. My favorite memory of Williams Field is a CAF-type event there where I got to climb in a B-17. Our ancestors were very brave young men. I'm glad the city of Phoenix has bought land near Luke to create a buffer and help preserve the base.

Was never happy the name was changed from Williams Field Road to Chandler Boulevard. Williams was an important part of our Cold War flight training, and I think we lost some history after BRAC. And the history of many other facilities as well.

Welcome to the forum. I have found it to be one of the most cordial around. The moderators are excellent, and the members who stay are knowledgeable and cordial.

Welcome! I used to travel to Phoenix a lot (1x/month) for work years ago. Learned not to book afternoon flights in the summer as it was sometimes so hot they could not takeoff! But it's a dry heat... :ROFLMAO:

You'll enjoy this forum and as mentioned, mods do a get job of keeping things under control when occasionally necessary. I have learned much!

Someone explained that to me on our flight this summer into Phoenix. Not only can they not takeoff if it gets too hot, but the landings can be pretty rough on the way down when it's really hot. We flew into Phoenix Mesa, and that is a nice alternative to the main Phoenix airport.

For the more recent Phoenix arrivers, some history and trivia to impress your neighbors.

That Phoenix-Mesa airport is the old Williams AFB. To the northeast is the site of former GM Desert Proving Grounds, closed in 2009. Now it's only houses and retail with -0- sign GM was ever there. But if you went on the original Test Track at Disney World you saw footage of that facility.

There are many former Auxiliary fields encircling Luke and the old Williams that exist today, some of them converted to airports. They were once "rescue" fields for pilots who experienced problems during flight training. A former Luke Field Auxiliary field near Whittman is now a private racetrack. Scottsdale Municipal is a former training base, as is the site of the former Thunderbird Graduate School of International Mangement in Glendale, now a different private university.

On a similar theme, The Foothills development, north of the now-202 southern extension west of I-10, was once an International Harvester proving ground - it was developed in the late 80'-early 90's. And the former Caterpillar Proving Grounds at the base of the White Tank Mountains, WSW of Luke AFB is now part of the Verado development. Had a chance in the mid-80's to drive a D-9 Cat dozer out there :)

The Rustler's Rooste Steakhouse overlooking I-10 south of Baseline has been there for decades, long before it was part of the Pointe at South Mountain (when I lived nearby in 85-97) or the now-Arizona Grande Hotel complex. Took a date there in 1978, parked in a gravel lot at the base of the hill and walked up a dirt road to get there.

The site of Arizona Mills at I-10 and Baseline was once part of the University of Arizona Citrus Experiment Station.

Lot of changes in the Valley during my lifetime, just as there were before, as my grandparents and parents related. I'll stop now ;)

Welcome to the forum. I look forward to hearing more about your journey.
