Backyard Wildlife- what do you see?

Mostly deer and ducks. (Lot's of ducks) An occasional armadillo and a few squirrels, rabbits and turtles. Hog fences keep the hogs away. I've eliminated most snakes, skunks and rats and even one alligator over the years.

Geese, deer, geese, groundhogs, ducks, geese, rabbits, geese, copperheads, geese, chipmunks, geese, more deer, geese, robins, geese, hawks, geese, turkey vultures, geese, rat snakes, geese, garter snakes, geese, more deer, crows, geese, bees, geese, wasps, geese, crows, geese, more geese.

I think it’s Texas then Florida. But I’ve seen plenty of snakes in Georgia.
Of course this made me look it up. Here is a source, though I can't find the Wikipedia entry it refers to: 'Animal Institute - 100% volunteer, 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit animal protection organization. "Snakes are everywhere in Georgia. Though you will almost never see them, you are usually only a few feet away from the nearest snake. Wikipedia notes, 'According to a 2012 study, Georgia has 15.67 snakes per square mile, surpassing Arizona's 15.2 for the largest number in the country.'" Doesn't mention Florida, but who knows. Georgia is more densely populated than Arizona and Texas (though not Florida). Anyway, I enjoy repeating that in Georgia, on average, "you are usually only a few feet away from the nearest snake."

In the winter, we have elk. Hundreds of them. The rest of the year we have deer. They like to trim the bushes. 🤬

Black bear, mule and White tail deer Bobcats, fox, badgers, Ring tail cats. Rattlesnakes, Desert box turtles, Spiny lizards, Gila Monsters. 10 species of hummingbirds, notably Lucifer hummingbirds. I am cruising past Cabo MX on the way to Seattle.but Saturday we had this Gila Monster.

We live within a quarter mile of the Coconino National Forest and see - and sometimes hear - a lot of wildlife including deer, coyotes, bobcats, rabbits, ravens, crows, rabbits and javelinas. Apparently the gap between our house and the neighbor's to the north is one of the few on our street where wildlife can traverse easily from our street to the next and then into the National Forest without encountering fences, walls or other obstructions. As a result, it's like an animal freeway especially at night! In some cases they are attracted to a neighbor's water feature. It's a high desert afterall. Sometimes they just want to take the load of their feet in our back yard. 😁

We have a creek running along past the back yard in a wooded area and beyond that is a farm field so we see our share of critters. On more than one occasion in the morning DW has opened the curtain on the downstairs sliding glass door to find a deer or two on the other side of the glass looking back at her. Kind of startling the first couple of times. Probably for them too. We've seen fox, rabbits, black snakes, turkey, geese, skunks, and probably a few more types I'm forgetting.

Roadrunners, quail, coyotes, and javalinas are our most-interesting guests (not necessarily in the yard).

We back up into a nature preserve, so lots. Hawks, owls, eagles, hummingbirds, bobcat, coyotes (a lot), roadrunners, rattlesnakes (yeah, in our back yard), California king snakes, gophers (unfortunately), rats, lizards, and of course, squirrels.

When I lived in NJ one morning I pulled into the office parking lot early in the morning and started to open my car door and had a young buck , maybe a 4 pt., charge and slam my door with his rack. It was during the rut of course. Another time in the spring we came home from church and had left the garage door open and a young fawn was hiding in the garage while momma doe was out browsing through our lawn. Lots of deer stories...
