Last 24 hours has not been fun. Its to the point that it is helpful to remember:

"If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You get another chance."

One of my beloved beagles is inthe vet hospital and we still don't know whats wrong after two days. It could be the big C :( Regardless, the poor thing is getting the best care money can buy.

My parent's pitbull mix who I grew up with and who has been a faithfull companion and protectress for 17 years was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer yesterday.

In my family, the dogs are family members. It is like having a son and an aunt get very, very ill at the same time.

Sorry Brewer, I had a Beagle once. Loved that animal!

I was never able to train the Beagle however. Do you have any trouble training yours?

Hahahahahah!!! I can just about keep them from climbing onto the kitchen table (if I stand there and push them away while I am eating). Hounds, in general, are pretty hopeless as far as training goes except for trailing game/hunting.

Apparently someone's able to train beagles. One of the military's drug-dog teams in Pearl Harbor uses beagles on submarines-- the only animals dumb enough to (fit into &) race down a torpedo tube for whatever reward they use.

I am sorry to hear about your dogs. I feel the same way about mine as you do yours. Keep the faith. It may turn out better than you think.

I am really sorry to hear about your dogs too. Mine are getting older and it just breaks my heart to think about them getting ill. Last month was an especially expensive month (eye surgery) but that is one area of our budget that will not be compromised. They are our furry children!

Yup, I could get my Beagle to do almost anything if I had a treat in my hand. It got to where I would give the Beagle a command and it would sniff in my direction. If the Beagle did not smell a treat, it would simply ignore me. If it smelled a treat it would immediately obey.

I'm sorry Brewer, those little guys do worm their way into your heart ....

Yep

Peter, Becky, Prancer, Critter, DAWG - know the names of every dog since the age of 5 - like family.

Hope your dogs are ok....

Another former beagle owner. Couldn't train her unless I had something she wanted to eat.

Her favorite food was salmon. We could hardly eat it with her in the house. She's lunge towards it. You beagle owners know what I'm talking about. They definitely are food dogs (and garbage).

We gave her to a family with a boy beagle. Both dogs were much happier afterwards :)

- Maddy cant be trained either. She is smart as a whip, but she uses her brains for her own evil purposes (getting food and finding a warm body to snuggle into)....Hope things go ok.

With a name like mine you know I'm a dog lover. My golden retriever is snoozing as I type this. Birdie and myself wish you the best of luck!

Best wishes to my little buddy..

Thanks for the well wishes and sympathy, guys. We went to see the poor guy last nght at the hospital. He didn't look so great, with his face swollen, a pain patch on a shaved area, and an IV tube trailing off, but he was happy to see us and stopped shaking shortly after I started to pet him. He even sniffed and looked hopefully at us when my wife gave our 1 year-old a piece of cookie to keep her occupied, despite the fact that the poor thing's faceis too swollen to eat. It was good to see him, but of course I was bawling my eyes out practicaly the whole time.

We are supposed to get results from the radiologist's read of the CT scan today. Wish us luck...

Some positive news (I'll take what I can get): Porter is feeling well enough this morning that they are going to try offering him some soft food to eat. Still waiting on the radiologist...

Good luck Brewer.

Judy, Pete and Pretty Bird also send their wishes.

UncleMick: I got my first dog of my own at the age of 11. I named it NASA. I was really into the space thing at the time. All the old finns in the area thought its name was Nasser, after the Egyptian socialist. They were quite proud.

Brewer,
Sorry to hear about your pup being sick.  It's so hard when they can't tell you what's going on.  I had my 12 yr old dog Rufus at the vet for x-rays Tuesday -(he's been limping for a month). While he was "under" they recommended removing a big tumor - now he has a 4 inch Frankenstien incision on his side, and keeps looking at me with that "why did you do this to me" face.

I sympathize.  I hope things improve for you.

Martha - lot of us with Finn in the blood - in SW Washington.

Circa -1957 new house(1898 Victorian) in the city(actual sidewalk out front) - I was pulling up old carpet upstairs - the 1930's something newspaper padding showed the  armed National Guard 'occupying' Longview.

Dad said "That's why - I'm a conservative and vote Democrat." Wait till you get old and study 'the 47 states and Ths Soviet of Washington in history.'

Brewer - hope it's not the big C - lost two that way over the years - at ages around 14 yrs or so - a spaniel(Becky) and a Beagle(Prancer).
