Best Experiences

Best things:
Going a 2 week river cruise (Grand European Tour).
Spending over 2 months at my family cabin in the Summer.
Spending a lot of time talking with my DFIL to learn about his life, as my Dad died when I was too young to listen to him so I know very little about him and his life.

Worst thing:
Wasting time due to lack of structure, what joy is there is watching commercials on tv.

It is great to spend quality time with loved ones. My elderly dad does not travel any more, but I convinced him to take a short trip that I arranged. He is rather religious, interested in history and lives in KY. I took him on a "religious weirdos of KY" tour. We stayed at the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill and used that as our home base. (I HIGHLY recommend the Shaker village! You stay in the 200 year old Shaker buildings and there is lots to see. It is one of the least known and best attractions in KY. It is close enough to Mammoth cave national park to day trip there.) From there we visited Cane Ridge historic meeting house and home of ecstatic religious events of the early 1800s. Then we went to Gethsemani Abbey where Thomas Merton was a monk. That was close enough to Bardstown (the bourbon capital) that we also went there. Dad loved the trip and talks about it a lot.

Yep had several new Vettes, a C4, two, C5's and a C6. Drove a C7 for a while but it wasn't mine. Switched to Hellcat powered vehicles when I couldn't get in or out of the Vettes anymore. However, I "may" still get a low mileage C7 and drive it occasionally. I think the C7's are the absolutely best looking Vettes ever made. C8's are probably the best performing Vettes ever made but I still like the C7 styling the best.
Bought at Audi R8 V8 Stick :)

Some favorite memories...
White water raft the Ocoee river
Wading the White river and catching a couple trout
Spear fishing and beach camping in remote Mexico (near Belize)
Scuba
Kayak the Buffalo
Walking tours in cities visited
Various food in different countries
Helping people with projects for free
Living abroad and making new friends

For me the highlight has been having the time to travel and the resources to do so. In the past 3 years those trips have included:
  • a month-long trip exploring central-Italy with my SO
  • a two-week ski trip to Japan with my SO
  • a three-week trip to Italy with my SO including a week in Sorrento w/ in-laws
  • a week-long solo trip to Scandinavia to see family
  • multiple trips home to see friends and family in the Caribbean, both solo and w/ SO
  • over 20 more long-weekend trips to reconnect with friends and family
  • even more travel that didn't involve flying like road trips and ritzy ski vacations
I ski in the winter and I bike in the summer, and the ability to travel basically whenever I feel like opens up a whole world of possibilities, literally.

The best experiences I have had is sharing travel with my new wife. She had done some traveling, but nowhere like what we have done. When we finally stopped traveling, we had done 52 trips, 18 cruises ans over 500 travel days.
There is something special about sharing experiences with the one you love.

I've only been retired for 18 months but having time to scan the 12 boxes of family pictures I inherited has been very fulfilling. I've had time to take classes in genetic Genealogy which helped me solve a family mystery. That was an incredible moment.
