Blow that Dough 2024

July will be BTD month for the Jollystomper household. A large family reunion will be held where we are covering all of our kids and their families hotel, transportation, and most of the meals. Very much worth it for them to get together with my 6 siblings and their family branches. Then some of our children and our grandkids will be staying with us after that, and we have local events planned that we will mostly cover. Final total will come out somewhere in the neighborhood of $25K, but time spent with immediate and extended family like this is priceless.

Jolly, it’s all about the experiences….and making memories, not THINGS! Excellent way to BTD. Have a great time with your family!

Last month we bought a LG Gram Laptop for our DD, who will be a freshman in college this fall. I liked the laptop so much, I bought one for myself. I set it up yesterday, and love it. It is so light, fast, and great display. This is my first taste of Windows 11. So far, so good.

Probably about $2500 for the two laptops.

Got back from the Scotland trip last Tuesday (24 hour trip back due to 6 hour delay on the last leg from Salt Lake to Reno).
The Great Glen Way hike was great; we had one day with about 6 hours of rain and one morning with light rain, which means we got lucky for Highlands Scotland. Temps hit a high of 69 F one day, but mostly low of 50 to high of 60. Coming back to Reno at twice the temp was a bit of a shock.
We passed 9 distilleries on the short 2 day Speyside River hike. 125 miles in 12 days with one rest day in Inverness and another after (went to Culloden battlefield and museum; highly recommended).
Someone was interested in doing this so I posted.
First time we flew First Class, which minimized the pain of flying. We may do Europe every other year to fly First Class, although as I tell DW we can probably afford one First Class trip to Europe per year, fairly easily.
9 years ago we did the West Highland Way from Glasgow to Ft. William; this year we did the Great Glen Way from Ft. William to Inverness, while we are still able to walk 16 miles a day (the first day, since the B&B was 5 miles off the route. But it was one we stayed at 9 years ago, so that was cool, although with new owners).

We averaged 12 miles a day, which was great and easily done. 10 or 15 years from now, maybe not. Make hay while the sun shines. Given the first class flight cost, this was a BTD expense, but well worth it. It was our 40th anniversary, so I suggested the 1st Class flight to DW. I fear she is hooked.

While not the grand total by any stretch, we just reserved the final hotel for our ski trip to Japan.

R/T flights (business class), thirteen nights total between Tokyo and Hakuba, 3-4 resort days, and three days of guided backcountry skiing = $19k

I remarked to my better-half that the average family of 4 spends well north of $20k on a holiday week skiing at the Vail resort near our home, so really quite reasonable for a two-week trip to Japan.

But to BTD on top of dough blown, we're headed to the local bike shop tomorrow to get her fitted for a new mountain bike.

My mum is in her eighties and has always wanted to take a trip on this old paddle steamer.

So I am taking her on a trip across the country to do just that - and just be tourists for a week or so. Visiting other sights and resting a lot inbetween.

The trip on the lake won't cost that much but we will do our best to blow some dough on the rest of the trip!

After taking wife and 2 kids to Chicago and Milwaukee for baseball stadiums last month, I'm taking the oldest of our kids to the Sig Sauer Academy in NH for a few firearms training sessions. When I say kids, they are 27, 25 and 24.

3 days of training with a day kicking around NH, not sure what we'll do yet, and then hitting the Springfield Armory Museum on the drive back home.

This trip is around 5,000 all in, but going to be worth every penny. He works hard and never asks for anything or complains either.

Our BTD's are few and far between. DW will not let me buy any of the things on my list. Pole barn, mini ranch, Cadillac, etc. And we can't splurge too much on travel due to our eldercare situation with MIL.
.
I have the same issue with my disabled brother. We can do 5 or 6 days, leaving him with his "afternoon helper" who double duties it for us. But while we pay his help well, I worry about wearing out the welcome.

But now we're looking at two weeks in Tuscany next year with DWs side. I'm looking into "Respite Care" where he'd get a small apartment, three meals and a bit of supervision.

That "Respite Care" deal should work. I know some people who had their mother in something similar and it worked out well.

I've heard great things about it. were doing handgun 101 and then rifle 101 and 102. I would have loved handgun 102 to be available on the Wednesday so we could have done 4 full days but Wednesday is going to be a free day. we've done a lot of handgun stuff but little rifle, so when the 2 classes were available back to back I jumped on it.

a buddy promised to take us to a great clam hut.

Going to Florida next week. Staying in a condo on the beach. So far, I have booked:
jet skis
parasailing
night kayaking
4 hour private boat charter for snorkeling and such

Booked a 9 day trip on a Windstar sailing ship, Lisbon to Barcelona. Tops only 148 passengers. Friends from our last February Belize cruise, have booked the same LIndblad Greek Islands cruise we are on in the fall. They are a nice couple and we enjoyed each other's company in Belize and Guatemala.

Yeah, the trick will be convincing him!! He's incredibly stubborn and thinks he's in better shape and more independent than he is.

Put a deposit down on a 2024 Z06 Corvette. Should arrive mid September. Our NW will never be the same lol. But I justify it this way...

Cost of Z06 - $146k
Sold my 2007 GT500 a couple years ago for $40k
Been w**king PT for 3 years making about $15k/year = $45k
Getting $10k/year from Dad's estate (MIL sends a check annually) for 4 years now after he passed...he told me before he passed to use it for something "fun" - $40k

Thus the car is really only taking about $20k from our "original" NW.

Totally AWESOME!

Good for you! I lust over the new vette's and have built several online using chevy's design your own program. I thought I wanted white (all my cars are white) but they don't offer a pearl option, so I've shifted to red. Finally got to sit in one recently and my wife wants no part of it "looks like sitting in a coffin." She's giving me a hard time, tells me I'll look ridiculous in the car, screams mid life crisis. "go buy another mercedes, more your style." /walks away kicking rocks/

Dave, you're a man of similar mental gymnastics to me when it comes to buying something fun.

Mine bit me in the backside, as we committed to buying a snowbird spot for ourselves in December 2021. My primary logic was we were only spending part of our 2021 market gains. But even with 2022 being a down year, we're still in a good spot.

Enjoy your new car!

Kind regards,
Chris
