Blow that Dough 2024

Almost a micro BTD, but it’s over $100 so I’ll put it here. I just preordered the new Apple Watch 10. I’ve upgraded every time since I got my first AW a few years ago - an AW 8. Trading in my current watch, a AW 9, I got a $170 trad in allowance. I only buy the base model so $399 less the $170 is $229. The dollar amount isn’t really BTD, but upgrading each new model is getting to be in BTD territory.

It will be here next Friday.

DW and I went to the local annual art fair. We weren’t expecting to get anything significant, but I came across a landscape painting that liked enough to drop $900 on.

Here's my micro BTD this week:
Fired up the snowblower to check it out for winter. The gas in there is two years old because it got almost no use for two years, so the engine was surging.

Easy: drain the gas, replace the gas, maybe add some stabilizer.
Easier: call "the guy" to come pick it up and pay $300 to fix it. Just didn't want to be bothered. Plus disposing old gas now is a PITA.

Received a Ford Maverick Laredo yesterday. Ordered it in June. Went all out and got every option.
Haven’t had a pickup since I was 17, this is a bit different than that ‘67 International.
I hope you like it. I got one last May and is a ranch pickup and really like it.

Wow, some great BTD posts.

A planned BTD, but the timing was moved up due to the old vehicle needing more frequent repairs -

We traded the 2010 Honda CR-V for a 2025 Honda CR-V hybrid. The new vehicle gets ~50% better gas mileage and I knew from rental cars that the back-up camera and blind-spot sensors would be big plusses. The unexpected benefits are small things, like being able to lock and unlock doors with the key fob in your pocket, having a power rear door, and each fob automatically adjusts the drivers seat.

Unexpected BTD - we sprung for WeatherTech front floor mats and rear cargo mat (the battery is under the rear cargo area). Nice quality; the mats are thick and non-skid.

Better-half is flying to Italy later this year to spend a few weeks with her mother. For a few hundred dollars and 20k in miles she could upgrade to United Polaris with lie-flat seats for the flight to Rome, so I said, "BTD!"

Realizing we are free from my father-in-law, now that he’s moved into a retirement home, we booked a cruise to New England and Canada that leaves in two weeks. Nines nights away and we didn’t have to beg any of DW’s siblings to take their own father for a few days!

Our 35 year old AC stopped working, allegedly has leaks and uses an old freon so we are replacing the whole system gas furnace and the air conditioning system: $9,500. We also mailed out estimated taxes on Sunday, so it has been an expensive week.

This seems to have been a frequent occurrence with friends and relatives this summer . . .

And - DH just booked a flight to visit his father / brother in Europe.

Took the week "off" to travel to mom's house for some annual maintenance / upgrades & freezer stocking and then on to sis's house for some refreshing of kitchen cabinets.

Free labor / materials for them and a little family time to discuss the future needs of mom.

Had the same experience yesterday with our 33 year old air conditioner. Sitting at dinner I noticed the air running and it finally dawned on me it had been running all day non-stop and although we are in the Atlanta area, it wasn't that hot outside. Yep, lines frozen so probably a leak or bad compressor I would guess with no real knowledge at all. I'm trying a new repair company today and also asked for an estimate for a replacement system. Now I need to call for a couple more estimates as I never go with less than three.

Been a bit of an expensive year for lumpy expenses as we also had to replace two refrigerators (garage and kitchen) and there are still three months to go for this year. Fortunately we have a separate AC/Heat system for our bedrooms upstairs to we can still sleep in comfort.

Backyard remodel is 95% complete. Old fish pond rebuilt, concrete/tiled patio enlarged and replaced with pavers, old Trex steep ramp replaced with beautiful engineered wood bordered by planters, dead grass gone (small area of new grass installed but the rest is either stone or plant beds). Hundreds of new native plants installed along with drip irrigation. Two raised beds for herbs and veggies. Still need to update the furniture. Can't wait to enjoy it once the temperature stays below 90 - maybe next week?

Very nice, and inviting.

Ahhh yes, having the separate system for the bedrooms must be a relief!

My DH and I are blowing lots of dough on our 25-year wedding anniversary/Vow renewal celebration with over 100 of our family & friends. I have been having an absolutely wonderful time planning it.
Counting down the days to the big event (17 days remaining). :smitten:

I’m glad you have far more flexibility now. That can be such a burden caring for a parent and unable to travel while getting older yourself.

Since it's a Ford, it's probably a Lariat trim, same as my F-150, not a "Laredo".
A nice choice nonetheless...

Yes, separate system has been a blessing.

Service guys told me what I already knew - system is like me, old. Can't be economically repaired as it has no refrigerant left in it. Got my quotes and quite the range of prices for essentially the same equipment. New system going in tomorrow for both heat and air at just under $12K. Top quote for similar equipment went to $17K with a bit less in equipment and extra services.

Not how I expected to spend my day today. Fortunately, only hit 80 degrees today so it has been almost pleasant on our main floor. Going to heat up to mid 80's through next week though so tomorrow's install works for us.

Bought my daughter two high efficiency furnaces this plus install for her on going renovation.

Ready for what is promised be be a very cold and snowy winter.

If you have any more extra high efficiency furnaces to hand out, my second floor unit is still 17 years old. :2funny:
