Blow That Dough 2026

Today, at the age of 55, for the first time in my life, I just paid someone to plow my driveway. We actually didn't get THAT much snow. I'd say maybe 10-11 inches total. But, that was about 8 inches of snow, before it turned to sleet, ice, and freezing rain.

I'm retired, so I don't have anywhere to go any time soon, but I have two housemates who have to go to work tomorrow. One of them has a 2017 Murano that's AWD. He ran it up and down the driveway a few times, and got out to the road just fine. But the other one has a 2020 Nissan Kicks, just FWD. He also can't drive worth a damn in the snow. So, I tried to get it up the hill and out to the road. I got it up, after about 3 or 4 tries, and then once up there, we just left it there so it would be easier to dig out.

Well, this morning, my buddy with the Murano tried driving up. And that extra coating of ice was a whole different story! He'd get as much of a running start as he could, but then would eventually bog down on the hill. So he'd back down and try again. And sometimes, slide out of the ruts on the way back down, so we'd have to dig him out now and then.

I walked up to the mailbox, with the other housemate, and saw how the plows had piled up the snow, and how hard and icy it was, and was like that's it, we're screwed! Actually I used another word, but this is a family friendly forum!

Ironically, just as I dropped the shovel I was holding down in defeat, a black Chevy crew cab drove by, and slowed down. Asked if I wanted it plowed out. Turns out he was going to do the neighbor across the street and a few others on our road as well, so he could add me in, easily. And, as we were talking, my other housemate, with the Murano, comes barreling up the hill, and finally gets enough momentum to get to the top. But, there was no way he would have been able to get through where the snow plow piled it up.

So, I had the guy plow the roughly 400 feet from the road to the center bay of my garage. Best 200 bucks I ever spent!

I do have a snow blower. But it hasn't been used since 2016, which is the last time we got a serious snow storm. That one was about 19 inches, but no ice. I doubt if it would start, and even if it did, I'd imagine the seals are all dried up and it would leak fuel like crazy. That happened once before, when we let it sit too long.

We've had a few storms between 2016 and now where we might've gotten like 8-10 inches. But at the old house there was plenty of room to just park near the road and dig out. And at the current place, the driveway gets a good Southern exposure, so it would usually melt pretty quickly. So, we'd just dig out any piles the snow plows threw up, and just drive over the rest, and dig out if we got stuck.

I might look into getting the snow blower serviced and running again. But, at the same time, if we ever get another storm like this, I have a feeling I'd just be tempted to pay to have the driveway plowed again. I could see myself getting used to this!

I ran a snowblower for years after the plow guys would sometimes not show up in a timely fashion. Before I retired and moved I sold the snowblower. We got about 13 inches yesterday and this morning I had to move the truck out to the road so the guy could plow. Had about a 3 foot drift at the end of the driveway. Fired up the RAM 1500 , raised her to offroad setting and casually drove her out of the drive. I don't mind spending the money on snow plowing and have them shovel the walks. Those days are over.

Paid Spring college bills for DS and DD1. Next year, we will have 3 in college.

Purchased a Garmin inReach Mini 3+ ($500). There is also a monthly fee to use it.

Flights were canceled due to storms. Stay 3 night in Houston. Booked a day rental car for $98 on Expedia.com. Checked out the car actually for $298. This is really crazy.

Bite the bullet and started booking random stuff.

$2k for extra room at Westin in Chicago for trip.
$2k for extra room at Grand California for another trip
$2k - planning on lightening lane premier passes
$2k - tickets to a game
$500 - another extra room at AC hotel
$800 for better times on flights for 4 of us

Now that the bullet is bite I decided that i think we're a 2 hotel room family here on out. Gotta spend the kids inheritances.

I need to go to the micro btd thread too. DH is buying coffee daily on his drive to work. Got him addicted to just stopping and grabbing a cup.

Back in 2011 I built a computer using my tech friends build list, it worked well with the only problem being the power supply died about a year ago. Simple replacement. However with the computer going on 15 years old and TurboTax not working on Windows 10, I decided I need a new computer. I goaded my friend into building a new computer and again had him send me the list. But, after hearing the work he went through getting it all wired up, and with 6 or 7 multi color fans, which we would not want if it could have been deleted, I decided just to buy a computer. I placed my order yesterday with Newegg, I spent $1016. It is actually more computer than I need for what I do, I hope it is built to last, but I also hope I live long enough to have to buy another computer!

wise decision - it is almost never worth "building" a computer unless you have some unusual requirements or you enjoy doing it. i've done both ways over the decades , and i just never found a big advantage to building one.

After years of troubleshooting our Samsung dryer, it finally conked out on us in December. So we decided to replace with a Speed Queen washer and dryer set, including delivery, install, and haul away. $3,259.05 all in.

Sounds a bit excessive...

Today I had Can-Am's brand new Outlander Electric ATV delivered. The thing is a friggin beast! All-in (including all the attachments/accessories) it was $16K. Very expensive, but I had budgeted $25K to replace my old tractor, so this is a relative deal in comparison. I still need to get a pull-behind brush hog, which will be another $4-$5K, but I'll still be significantly under my planned spend. Now I just need to sell my old Ford 8N.

Gonna put the plow to use this weekend with the big snow storm bearing down on us.

Just to update, my expensive ATV EV is the boss of farm utility vehicles. Plowed our road like a hot knife through butter.

There’s a wine forum I belong to called Wineberserkers and once a year that have a Berserker Day and invite small producers of wines, gourmet foods, glassware, beef, you name it to blow out their goods at screaming deal prices. The event was even featured in Forbes. This year was their 17th annual day. They had over 133,000 people participate on Friday, the 30th.
I bought over $600 of wine and believe or not $40 worth of gourmet potato chips.

Who knows how much we'll spend... but DW and I have purchased a 1977 Airstream A/Van (aka step van, delivery van). Yes, it's made by Airstream, the same company that makes travel trailers and motor homes.

Even though the A/Van was intended to be a work truck, we are making it into a small camper. I've attached a picture of it in the gravel lot when we purchased it a few months ago. Also attached is an AI generated image similar to what I imagine it may look like when we complete the rat-rod/camper conversion.

We're usually pretty frugal, but have decided to Blow That Dough in 2026!

I'll bite on this thread. Don't have numbers but those in the know will see it will be a BTD year:

80s cruise early March...they do not give discounts
Started flying again to get my FR (not cheap) because I am going back to Australia in May to do a long cross country from Melbourne to Aerlie Beach and back. Bought business class airline tix for AUS trip...and will need to pay for plane, fuel, etc on small plane flight for cross country.
After cross country will fly to Broome for a week to check the Kimberlies.
Attending an Oxford class for a week in late July.
Will be going to Stockholm to visit a friend.
Have three concerts to see in Germany.
Booked a bike/cruise off southern Croatia coast for late August.
I will essentially be over the pond for six weeks in the summer.
Tiling around outside of house....way too much $$$! But needs to be done.

I have calculated and calculated and it seems I can truly afford all of the above without causing a significant dent or a serious dip at this early part of my retirement that would scare me with a SORR downward spiral.....just amazing.

I think my father's death and my not getting any younger has lit a fire under me this year (and next) to get done what I want sooner rather than later. Even if I divide my portfolio by a conservative number of years, I am fine. So, big BTD years in 26 and 27 it is.

Got a new phone a few weeks ago and today I got a new iPad. 2026 is electronic upgrade year. My old iPad was from 2018 so that was a pretty good run. I got a base iPad Pro from Amazon. It was/is $899 ($100 off) and I get 5% more off using my Prime card. It definitely works better. It is faster and the screen, being OLED, is very sharp. Plus I doubled my memory even though I don’t store much on my iPad. So, iPhone 17, iPad Pro, I think some AirPod Pro 3’s are in my future.

I can smell your cash burning from here! lol

Over the years, we've considered getting a food truck, and that looks perfect if we were willing to spend the money to convert it.

I'm still wanting to BTD on more land that borders my ranch. I'm still hopeful owner and I can make a deal at sometime. He knows my extremely lucrative accommodating open offer to purchase more from him.
Not yet but hope to at some time to expand and BTD.

I had one of the garage door safety sensors break. I went to the local big box place and bought a replacement set. ($40). I unhooked the old ones and had to splice the wires on to the existing wires for the new ones.
I realized I didn't have any small wire nuts so back to the big box store. ($8)
I got everything wired, and attached to the door track, and couldn't get them to line up. It's 12° out, my hands are freezing and I couldn't get them to work.
I finally said F%#k it and called the garage door company. The young kid shows up in within an hour and tells me my right-side track is a little bent and that's why they're not lining up. He proceeds to bend the track straight by hand and everything now works fine. The whole thing took him 5 minutes, and he charged me $40 bucks and what little manhood I had left.
So final tally was $88 bucks for sensors I could have bought off Amazon for $14 bucks but I was impatient.

It's not a terrible idea to hire a local garage door company to come out and inspect, lube, and adjust your garage doors every 5 years or so. The springs on garage doors are potential death traps, so I don't mind spending a few bucks to have them looked at occasionally.

I agree. This is a company I've used before and they do good work at a fair price.

I've recently started to literally throw money into the trash. On the extreme off chance comes when I pay with cash, when I get the change I throw away any pennies, dimes and nickels. I keep the quarters and just throw them in my car for parking meters.

I think you could put a jar next to your keys, and throw the change in there. When the jar gets full, take it to the charity of your choice. I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

Watching the Olympics and loved the Team Norway Sweater from Dale of Norway. Found it at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle on sale for $280. This is my 3rd genuine Norwegian wool sweater and they are worth every penny  Got the Navy Blue
