Blow That Dough Contingent Upon...

I want to buy a 4WD high clearance vehicle (e.g., 4runner, land cruiser, lexus gx). It would be an impractical toy. I have never had a fun vehicle. Once my foot recovers, if I can still hike decently, I'm getting a fun vehicle. I would need it to get into some places I want to go. At least that is the story I tell so my DW agrees. (Just kidding, she doesn't care)

I would also use it to sleep in from time to time. Yes, I would be the crazy millionaire sleeping in his car. There are just some places that hotels are not available, and I really don't like sleeping outside. I had enough of that in the Army.

For the longest time, I didn't want to do the Pebble Beach circuit, i.e. Pebble Beach, Spyglass and Spanish Bay golf courses until my golf was "good" enough. We did Poppy Hills and other courses in the area last summer and decided what the heck, I am probably not going to get any better and I play well enough to win tournaments based on net scores so we will just do it. I play in alot of very tough courses when we travel, and also some of the tougher courses where we live. My husband has played twice at Pebble Beach and insisted that my golf is definitely good enough to play there. We are going to BTD and stay on site and do the 3 courses and will cost us about $12K for the 2 of us for 5 nights.

Since my husband only wants to play in October when it's warmer, and we could not get in this year, and Spanish Bay is closed for reno and unavailble next October, it will have to wait until October 2027. The reservation folks at Pebble Beach resort has it on their calendar to connect with me next March to make the reservation for October 2027.

I've played all 4 courses several times when I lived in California. And we always stayed at the Inn at Spanish Bay. Go for it.

We are waiting for our preferred CCRC unit to open up, at which time we will BTD to the tune of approx 16% of our NW. 85% of that is refundable to our estate if we decide to leave or get carried out.

IF we could find the "perfect" condo on the mainland, we might BTD and purchase before we are forced to buy. Within a couple of years, we'll likely lose our rental (the old homestead we rent from niece - now SHE wants to FIRE!). I'd so much rather stay in place but some decisions are taken out of one's hands - and this looks to be one of those decisions. BUT, with time to look, we refuse to consider anything that isn't "perfect" at this point.

Our back up is to simply rent someplace else. "Perfection" is less of an issue then, but would be desirable. And, of course BTD would be more of a mini-BTD as we are already renting - and. assume our rent would go up significantly.

Not looking forward to this "new phase" of "late retirement" issues. But, whatchagonnado?

Replaced batteries of my camp's solar system.
After six years two of the GC2s developed internal shorts. The solar system pushed 60 Amps, through them. Got pretty warm.
New set of six GC2 at sams club, including $50 to join, Just short of $800.- Out the door. And they loaded them into my pickup truck's bed. Total weight a bit over 370lb.

Napa would have cost over $1200.-. Two miles from my house.
It was worth the 1 hour round trip and joining fee.

Life can be short. I try to not deny myself of anything.

I vote you should GO! Play the proper tees for your ability and you'll have a great time.

I have no problem playing 5400 to 5800 yards at many of the courses although I prefer 5000 yards to 5200 yards.

I enjoy going through the Blow That Dough thread and was wondering if anyone else has a BTD contingent upon some non-financial milestone?

For me, it's a Martin acoustic-electric guitar. Mayber something like this model Martin GPC-13E Ziricote Acoustic-Electric Guitar | Martin Guitar

I can afford it, but will not buy one until I judge that my playing is 'good enough'.
I paid about the same for a nice Taylor acoustic about 10 years ago. They now sell for double what I paid.

That being said, I'm a pretty competent bass player but only dabble on guitar and play very little. But I decided that if I was going to own an acoustic guitar I wanted it to be a nice one that I enjoyed playing.

If you can afford it, spend the money.

2 things i would add
1. if you get a chance play it beforehand. the feel and sound are a particular thing on acoustics.
2. rosewood is restricted these days. if you find an older one you can a rosewood back and sides. not sure if this means much to you though.

If you need a contingency to spend money, use inflation. Figure you're saving money if you buy it now rather than later.

Let me add that it's a lot more fun to play a good guitar than an average guitar, which may lead to you playing more and improving. It's hard to play an acoustic with high action, and even harder for a beginner.

One of the reasons that I bought my Taylor was because it had a slim neck that suited my hands and low action that made it very easy to play...for example full barre chords could be easily done all the way to the 12 fret.

The house needs refreshing--walls painted, carpet replaced, kitchen cabinets either sanded and refinished or replaced, etc. I am the type of grandma who doesn't care if toddler grand babies run their toys/trikes/etc into walls or across surfaces. Things are easily cleaned and we are planning on the updates eventually.
With last grand baby now 6, we figured next year was BTD for the updates.
DD recently stated they may be thinking of another one....... :)

My main guitar is a Yamaha FG-TA. It's not hindering my playing. I don't consider that I'm depriving myself by not buying a Martin now; it's more of an incentive for me to get better.

Find a friend that plays better than you and get together with them. You'll learn more in a half hour playing with someone good than you'll learn in several hours on your own.

I have several friends that play better than I do, and I get together with them as often as possible. :)

I’ve been waiting to buy a real piano for a while now. At first it was a question of sticking with it*. Now it’s a matter of needing some space.

*resumed playing piano at 58 after not playing at all since age 21. Amazingly it only took 6 months to recapture where I had been and passed way beyond in subsequent years.

I have my eye on a Martin ukulele, but I first want to be able to easily land Bb and Bbm chords....maybe later this summer.
