A couple of years ago I asked my PCP about the timing of pneumonia shots (65 years old) because I lost a friend to “pneumonia like” symptoms at age 62. My PCP indicated that because I smoked cigarettes as a young adult, he could justify giving me the shot at my age (early 60s). Since I was leaving on vacation the next day I declined the shot for that visit.
Fast forward, I see the latest and greatest PCV shot is now an updated version PCV21 (Capvaxive) which recently came out and was approved in mid-2024. Based on the CDC website below (under routine vaccination)
Adult Immunization Schedule Notes
it looks like I'm now eligible for the PVC21 shot based on my 63 years of age and lack of any prior PCV shots. Instead of getting the shot at my next PCP annual visit, I might just go to my pharmacy and inquire about the cost of getting the PCV21 shot for myself. I like the pharmacy option better as I doubt my PCP office can tell me my actual out-of-pocket cost prior to administering the shot.
I also see DW is recommended to receive an updated PVC21 shot based on her age (>65) and her prior receiving of the PCV23 and PCV13 shots about 10 years ago (our prior PCP recommended that she get the shots early based on her historic mild asthmatic conditions).
I don't remember much discussion on this issue, but I have to believe that many other member of the forum fall into these categories and might have some comments on the new PCV21 shot.
Thanks in advance.
