Car, Car and more Car.. How many is Enuff? How many in your life time?

That's a beautiful Corvette. I was always partial to a somewhat later version. Not my car - never got to own one but drove a few of them for work. Early job at a repair shop and I got to pick them up and drop them off at the dealer. The mechanic in my shop specialized in Vettes and had a contract with a local Chevy dealer. Sweet perk for a 17 year old.

'14 Silverado LE 4x4 v8 5.3l (Paid 36k after tax, title still driving it at 105k miles. 2nd time we took a small loan out.)
'17 GMC 2500HD Turbo Diesel V8 6.2l (shared with DF paid $42k tax after tax/title)
'22 Camry SE 4cyl 2.0l (shared with DW paid $28k financed a small amount, still owe like $5k @ 1.9% apr)

Been driving for 27 years. Same for DW. If you add in the three other cars she owned (bought and paid for by her grandma, and dad she ended up selling her '04 Monte Carlo for a profit knowing it was going to need head gaskets)

So it looks like in my life, I've spent about $104,151 on vehicles, and we still own 3 of them. If I had to guess they are probably worth a combined $90k right now.

So between DW and I we really have only spent $14,151 total net after re-selling.

If Pops would have game me my half of the insurance money for the totaled motorcycle, we are at less than $12,000 for a combined 53 years of total driving.

$226/year on average in vehicle acquisition costs for both of us. Not too shabby.

In 7 years my son will begin driving so we might need to re-evaluate at that point.

I do a lot of my own mechanical work. Being very in tune with our vehicle costs and maintenance has helped us become millionaires.

Buffet is infamously known for driving his older cars. So why not us?

I've owned 6 vehicles since I started driving in 1978:

1972 Mustang (used)
1982 Dodge Charger hatchback
1990 Mazda B2000 pickup
1995 Dodge Dakota (used)
2005 Subaru Impreza
2015 Acura TLC

Turning 60 this month and I’ve only had 4 cars since college. A used Dodge Omni (totaled when I got t-boned by a kid who blew a stop sign) and a new Dodge Omni in 87. Those were pretty lousy cars, but cheap. Next I bought a 94 Acura Integra (stick!) which I owned for 23 years and 200k miles. Loved that car! Solid as the day I bought it. Sold it to a good friend for $10. Now have a 2017 Hyundai Tucson with less than 60k on the clock, purchased new. Nice car, very comfortable and lots of nice features. Not nearly as fun as the Integra, but way easier to get in and out of.
Ha. More than me! See post #92 above (or I'll save you the effort: only 3 cars, me turning 62).

I wonder how many Buffett has owned.
According to chat gpt:

Buffett reportedly owned just a handful of cars, and he prefers used cars. One of his more famous vehicles was a Cadillac DTS, which he drove for many years before upgrading to a newer Cadillac XTS in 2014. Prior to that, he drove a Lincoln Town Car. He has mentioned that he only drives about 3,500 miles per year, so his cars tend to last him a long time.

Cars have been my Achilles heel for sure. I have (finally, I think) learned that the excitement wears off quickly. If anything I was more excited at 18 with my VW Rabbit than my current ride which I rarely drive (although when I do it puts a smile on my face). Next vehicle already planned for retirement to be a Toyota truck or SUV. Current ride below, and 11 in between that and first VW.

From my spread sheet 45. Currently have 6 so I do keep my cars awhile. All but 4 were used. Hope I live long enough to hit 50. I have several friends that currently own over 50 and a couple with over 100 so I feel like an amateur. Have know idea what their totals are. One high school friend I was talking to this summer kept mentioning cars, I finally asked how many he had and he didn't know for sure but said 72 were currently insured.

I bought my first vehicle right after graduating from college when I was 22 years old in 1979, I will be 68 this coming April.

1979 Jeep CJ-7
1986 Toyota 4WD Truck
1989 Toyota 4WD Truck (bought for Xtra Cab feature)
2003 Toyota Tacoma 4WD
2010 Toyota Tacoma 4WD (Current vehicle)

The Jeep was the only vehicle I financed, $5K for 3 years. Learned my lesson, all other were bought cash.

The longevity of two of the Toyota trucks saved me a ton of money and helped in allowing me to ER. I don't like the redesign and engine in the 2024 Toyota Tacoma so looking at buying a Honda Ridgeline in the Spring of '25.

You were out of college and had a Jeep at 22. Life doesn't get any better than that.

I was fortunate, but I worked hard for it. I graduated from college without any debt thanks to AF ROTC and went on active duty 6 months later as a 2nd Lt. ROTC really helped me with paying for much of my college education and a guaranteed job when unemployment had hit 10%.

Thought I had posted to this thread but evidently not:

1972 Volkswagon 411 - burned on the NJ turnpike (injector fire)
1970 Thunderbird - burned on PA turnpike (electric seat fire)
1976 Hodaka Road toad (student commuter)
1968 Beetle - black
1968 Beetle - white
1968 beetle - blue-ish
1988 Subaru Legacy (wagon)
1996 Nissan Pathfinder
2008 Volkswagon Touareg
2020 Mercedes 350 - caught fire on the Edmonds Ferry (fancy electric system)
2023 Nissan Armada

Of these vehicles, I loved the 411 and the Touareg (which sacrificed itself but saved me when it was t-boned by a semi at 30 mph).

I drove Beetles for years and had a stockpile of heater boxes in my garage. Each one eventually rusted through the floorboards and had to be scrapped when it could no longer pass inspection.

Interestingly 3 of these caught fire.

Based on your luck with car fires, I wouldn't buy an EV!
