Cheapwad Finds--Opposite of Blow That Dough!

Walmart has that 65" Roku TCL TV again for $228. I got this one last year for the same price.

Not sure if this qualifies as a cheapwad find, but I just swapped out the wheels on our vehicle from off-road tires to dedicated winter tires. I used to pay a gas station $20 to do the swap, but now they charge $85 minimum to use their lift.

A nice shop jack, stands, and a lug attachment for our impact driver cost less than $100. With them, it takes me under an hour to swap the wheels out. With two swaps a year, the purchase pays for itself every single year.

My cell provider offered me a Samsung S24 FE for $10 a month for 24 months ($240). It goes for $800 on Amazon (Canada) so I took up their offer. I didn't really need a new phone but I hand my old ones down to my parents and my dad's has a cracked screen.

Then 2 days later their promo was offering it for free so I contacted them and they price matched the promo.

New phone for free!

It never hurts to ask! Good on you.

The deal was so good my wife also got an S24 FE even though she has a perfectly good iPhone.

It's only been a couple days but she likes it so far, especially the larger screen.

I got a new IPhone 14 for free from T Mobile when I signed up for their 55+ plan. My old phone was the original IPhone SE. It was so old it stopped supporting apps I needed, and nobody would do a trade-in for it. My new phone also came with a few months of free Apple music and Apple tv. Not bad.

McDonald's has $0.50 double cheeseburger deal in the app.
I don't do apps to save a few cents though YMMV.

I told one retail grocery store manager that I would cease to buy at his store if I saw even one more "deal" that was only available with an app. He sheepishly admitted that I could get the "deal" at the checkout by asking for it.

He was right, but I had to badger the check-out person and get a manager to come approve it. It was a good enough deal that I took the extra effort and time but I raised as much "stink" as I could possibly muster.

It took 5 minutes of two store empl*yees's time so they didn't get my cell phone data and they had to sell to me at the "deal" price and they lost money because of the extra time involved - and I'm still mad at them!.

I don't know if "one man" can make a difference, but I'm gonna push the issue until I am convinced it's not worth the effort. I guess we'll see. I do NOT want to NEED to have a smart phone to go shopping! YMMV

Oh, and GET OFF MY LAWN!

Returning you now...

I have been paying $6.67/month including all taxes for SiriusXM radio this past year. Renewal notice advised the price was going to increase to approx. $32.00/month. I called to cancel and was advised they could offer a special price of $7.79/month and I declined that. Their final best offer was $5.49/month including tax for 12 months. I gladly took that offer. Do you suppose anyone pays full price for SiriusXM radio?

Yeah, I'm all for cheapwad finds. I'll look for specials and coupons. But loading apps for every merchant on my phone is where I draw the line.

Forcing customers to load the app to get the deals which used to be hung up on posters in the fast food restaurants isn't something I don't want to encourage. I've been known to look at the menu board prices, and the lack of any advertised specials, and realize I could go buy "real" food somewhere else for the same price, nearly as quickly. And just walk out.

Apparently I'm not the only one. Every once in a while you see an article about some fast-food CEO admitting that customers are resisting the recent and dramatic price increases. Maybe they'll get the message?

I just sign up for the free three month trial every once in awhile. Same name, same vehicle, doesn't seem to matter. I enjoy it while I have it but use spotify the rest of the time.

Yeah, another benefit to not eating at fast food places or eating out when home. We eat out when traveling, generally non-chain, and haven’t run into any of this use our app crap.

The only retail store app I occasionally use is one grocery store, and that is occasionally to clip a coupon although recently I discovered that the price has already been dropped and I didn’t even need the coupon! I occasionally use the app to see if something is in stock, where it is, and sometimes to check the price

I do that on the supermarket's web site. In this age of apps everyone forgets that web sites still exist. For now.
I like the Apps. I order and pay right from the App and put in the table number, no more waiting in a line.
I can see the benefit. My problem is I'm not about to download an app for every restaurant I visit. I suppose the two big burger chain apps would be justifiable for a long road trip, as would one for a favorite local restaurant. But I'm trying to resist for as long as I can.

I generally don't like apps or kiosks. However, I find that when I am looking for something specific and don't know where in the store to find it, some retailers show the location on their website, the aisle and shelf that item is on. Menards, Home Depot and Walmart are a few.

DW shops at Joann Fabrics. She gets all kinds of discounts in her app. When buying online, she can only apply 1 code. At the store, they will scan as many that are applicable.

Well that may be, but most often I’m already in the store checking on locations, using my phone. The app is more convenient and often has a list of my items.

Oh right the other app I use is Starbucks when we are on the road. The car lines to the drive through are often ridiculous, so we order a few minutes before arrival and I just have to step inside to pick up my prepaid order. They also give you a discount via points.

Yeah. Did my annual dance with them about a month ago. 2 vehicles were going to raise it to $42/month. Threatened to cancel and voila back to my usual $5.99/month per vehicle.

I assume $5.99.

Another reason to use an app is some store have different prices online vs. in the store. Looking at you Walmart.

I'm sure there are advantages to you for accepting store apps but be certain of this: They offer the app for THEIR benefit - not yours.

Harbor Freight (used to do this) will keep their flyer on the checkout counter to quickly scan for discounts. Makes it much easier than having to put their garbage on my phone.
Another store I like is Tractor Supply for nuts & bolts. Rather than having to price each item individually they just weight the whole lot. Makes it so much quicker and easier.

Nobody has ever said life without apps is easy. And it's getting harder by the day.

As with everything, there's a price to pay. At least I know the price I pay for refusing to use apps (e.g. the extra effort I have to exert to use a website to download store coupons to my loyalty account).

Nobody knows the real price of incurred when using apps they're put on their phone.
