Cheapwad Finds--Opposite of Blow That Dough!

Do you have access to local news? I'd feel lost without that access.
I got rid of cable about 20 years ago and have been using an antenna since. I first had the large old fashioned type that eventually rusted since I am next to the ocean. The present antenna is a much smaller ClearStream I bought 5-6 years ago that pulls in all the local channels with their substations (about 7, with sub-stations 32). Cost me about $100 with no other expense after. With a smart TV there are hundreds of stations, streaming (like Netflix, Hulu, etc.) and music channels if you have computer service.

Large Instapot $8 at Goodwill. Handy to have two with more time to cook and can. Keeping my eye open for one more.

You don't need a Smart TV for that, although it seems like everything you can buy is a Smart TV anymore. But my TVs have HDMI, but are not Smart TV's, and you can buy external dongles like Amazon Fire HD and Roku that connect to the HDMI port for streaming. You have to pay for internet service, though. Having a computer isn't necessary.

You all can't get OTA TV?
I cut cable 12 years ago and have not paid a cent for any streaming. I put up an attic VHF antenna at the time, had to use an amplifier and HTPC with time-shifting & commercial skip, recently swapped out VHF antenna for a UHF antenna, and still watch it, mostly for news and NFL. I do pay for internet service, so I can stream that ad supported stuff like Pluto. It's been a few years since I've played a DVD, HD-DVD, or Blu-ray. There's too much free content to justify subscribing to anything.

Not a lot of sales on sun screen here - Target or any other store.
It's not Hawaii, but yesterday in Phoenix I found Coppertone spray sunscreen on clearance at Target for $3.17. It never occurred to me they'd have to be clearing out sunscreen in Phoenix, especially in the winter when people can actually go outside.

The nearby hang-tag coupon for $3 off Coppertone was icing on the cake.

Bison steaks were half-price at our local Kroger and I had a coupon for another $1 off up to 5 items. So, I bought 5 6-oz sirloin steaks for $24.95 total.

Burger King has $0.01 cheeseburgers with a $1 purchase on the app. Add some additional toppings to get to $1.

Walmart has Easter decorations 90% off and Easter candy 75% off.

I just bought a bunch of the on sale 'Easter' cake mixes to donate to the Food Pantry.

At my dental cleaning last week, the hygienist suggested I try using a water pick.

I had no idea that they now make rechargeable ones with a built-in water reservoir. And, as luck would have it, the top rated one with thousands of reviews was 50% off.

Been using one for 10 years! They are great!

I decided to get a electric toothbrush that also features a water flosser. It's pretty neat. You fill the reservoir with water and close the cap. Then brush for 2 minutes. After 2b minutes it gives you an audible signal and shifts to water flossing

I didn't know they made such a thing as a water flosser. Im interested. I have an oral-b electric that I no kidding have been using since the 90s. That thing is indestructable.

My Oral-B electric toothbrush is about that old too. Just replace the head occasionally. Sure wish they made cars and clothes dryers like that.

What brand of magical device is that?!

After 7 years, my Oral-B got to a point where it wouldn't stay charged for more than 5-6 days. Thankfully, a family member got me a new one (Amazon 2-for-1 sale) and the charge lasts over 2 weeks of twice a day 2-min brushing.

I've been using aftermarket heads that cost barely $1 and last 2-3 months.

Mine can brush and floss at the same time.
Waterpik sonic fusion 2.0

It was the model recommended by my dentist.

Bison steaks were on sale again for 50% off, so I bought 5 more. There were other BOGO deals this week on items we regularly purchase which, when combined with digital coupons, brought the $130 grocery bill down to $65.

Being a Cheapwad (see thread title), I brush with an old-fashioned manual toothbrush. Totally cordless, no batteries, no recharging.

For the record, the dental hygienist always remarks on my "good home dental care" or some such language. And they usually give me a free toothbrush in the little bag off swag they send me home with.

I love a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. Old fashioned Quaker Oats taste much better than instant or quick cook oats. But steel cut oats which are just the raw groats give a nice chewy texture in addition to the slimy slop from cooking regular Old Fashioned Quaker Oats, which have been previously steamed ,rolled, then dried. I recently got a 25 lb bag from Winco for less than $20 as compared to the cheapest on Amazon that costs about $25 for 6 lb.

Any problems with weevils with such a large batch?

I have had weevil infestations before. So now I put all flour, rice, pasta, oatmeal, etc. in clear air-tight containers with a few Bay leaves. They can be found in all grains. I don't know if it helps but I haven't seen weevils in a year. Putting the flour, rice, etc in the freezer is also a good idea to prevent weevils that would be present in the products when they are bought. Even if you don't see weevils there are probably eggs.

I'm sure they aren't dangerous, but kinda gross. FIL told me that when he was fighting in the Pacific Theater during WWII, the guys simply never looked at the bread they were eating as it would be full of legs and body parts of bugs that had hatched in the flour. No way to avoid it, so eat it but don't look.

So I guess if they didn't see the whole weevil, they just assumed they were eating the lessor of two weevils :)
