My wife wanted to cast something from her Android tablet for one of the grandkids, and got an error message about "Untrusted Device" and out-of-date firmware.

A quick google got lots of hits in just the past 2 days. The 'certificate' for these devices expired, and Google missed on getting an update out. Supposedly working on it, but it looks like it has to wait to be incorporated into the next release, so who knows? A good explanation here:

Speaking of Google, it has acknowledged the issue and confirmed that a fix is in the works. "We're aware of an issue with Chromecast v2 and Chromecast Audio devices," a Google spokesperson said. "We will share an update once we have more details about the issue and the fix."

You can keep an eye on the support thread in the official support forums for updates on that front.

Right.
Got an email from Google about this.
We need to stay tuned...

Thanks for posting this, I was lucky enough to buy to chromecast audio devices and got great use out of them.
Recently tried to use them again after a couple of years of not using them and something failed, probably not this issue, but this issue would have roadblocked me permanently.

I'll look forward to a new certificate or some other solution.

Here's how you can fix Chromecast authentication errors before Google does

Google is still working on a fix, but you can try these workarounds to get your Chromecast partially working again.

Is this relevant?

Yes, that first link sure looks like it covers it, should roll out over the next few days:
After sending out an email yesterday apologizing for the issue yesterday, Google on Thursday morning started rolling out a fix that for the problem that will be “completed over the next few days.” The company tells us that “users must ensure their device is connected to WiFi to receive the update.”

NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Don't do the above!!!!!!!! It involves a Factory Reset, which could really hose things up! From that same article:

For those that factory reset their 2nd Chromecast or Audio in an attempt to fix the issue, Google is “still working to resolve the issue… Please continue to check the Community page here for updates and next steps.”

Okay thanks, I'm just reporting what I read.
It looks like the early rollout of 14 has a few minor issues for some users.
And there is this from the article -
The update overall appears to be stable, and some have mentioned that a factory reset leaves the device faster than it was before, but it’s clear there are some hiccups.

No problem, things were moving fast, that seemed to be a reputable source, but then more info came to light. I just wanted to be sure no one ended up trying that 'fix', and maybe getting themselves in deeper trouble.

I always consider a factory reset the absolutely last thing to try after all other repair options have failed. Even then, I hate doing it.

Mine works fine as of several hours ago. Guess I got the automatic firmware upgrade...

I saw this, and just had my wife test ours. Working!

Glad to see this didn't turn into a 'planned obsolescence' thing, we have three of these old gen units, and they work just fine for our needs.

Not a very good look for Google, there ought to be a system to stay on top of Certificate expiration dates, for any device that is still in service. Though they did get it fixed in short order, so a plus for that at least.
