Class of 2025

I jumped off the corporate hamster wheel at age 44 to join the family biz and hope to completely disengage from the family biz in 2025 at age 62 (this will require a lawyer - ugh, I already have too many lawyers in my life :nonono:). Some questions to ponder as I contemplate the next (and probably last) phase of my life:
(1) What constitutes humans behaving at their best, and how can I deploy my (considerable) assets to encourage this behavior?
(2) Wouldn't it be nice to believe on my deathbed that the world is a better place because I had lived?
(3) What's the highest and best use of my mental capabilities?

Just for fun ask Chatgtp.

Well, it's that time of year again. I suggest starting off by watching "It's A Wonderful Life" as soon as possible.

If the company stock is in good shape when I sell it next year I'll be at my theoretical "I personally don't need to work" number, but I plan on keeping going, so I guess I don't get to be Class of 2025 even though I think I'll be back to FI then, heh.

Nothing wrong with FatFIRE a year or two later...

April 4th is the day! I turn 52 soon and wife (51) retired a year ago. Over the last 5 years, I've been pairing back the business I started in college and on April 4, will call it a career! I've taken much inspiration & education from this forum over the last 10+ years. Hopefully there are many, many others able to join the class of 2025!

April 4th will be here before you know it!
My day will be somewhere around the end of June. I have a w*rk anniversary on June 15th. I have to see about 401(k) vesting, vacation days, etc.
So now, instead of OMY, it's 6MM for me.

Well, my spouse's contracts are ending, and while so far my work hasn't changed that much so far (except for a lot of pointless busywork removing many hundreds of pages containing words that have been censored, then editing them out so we can repost the information), I'm not sure how long we'll be allowed to keep working on the website and outreach, considering HHS is trying to consolidate all communications, despite its size and incredibly broad functions. So, we will probably retire this year, and we can certainly afford it, although if the market continues to drop we might just tighten our belts for a while or even do a little freelance consulting. But 2025 will probably be the year for us!

I know I've mentioned it elsewhere, but figured I might as well throw my hat into the ring here. On April 2 (yesterday) I announced my retirement at work. It was my 55th birthday, and figured I'd make it by birthday, Christmas, and Independence Day all rolled into one!

I told them I'd be willing to stick it out until April 30. It feels like a big weight has been lifted off of me, and it's good to finally be off of the One More Year (OMY) treadmill!

Congratulations, I've been following that thread, it inspired me to talk about how close I am. I wish it was voluntary, if I have the choice I might stay until the markets are doing better, but either way we'll be fine.

I am class of 2025 too. My planned date was two years from now. But my first day of retirement was April 1.

It was kind of voluntary. I didn't get fired. But it was one of those we are downsizing and if you don't take the offer, we won't guarantee you will have a job. There is also a chance your job will be moved to another city.

But I am really glad I was in a financial position to go for it. A lot of people who got the offer were not.

I am currently in the rest and recover phase.

Class of 2025! I am retiring at the end of summer...Listing my house for sale in July, will give my notice to work when it's under contract. Hopefully will leave in August. 24+ years in law enforcement. Cheers!

I would take the offer in a heartbeat if I were eligible.

Congratulations!
I hope to be in the same place on Independence Day this year.

3 Congrads in line..... DW got pulled into the office and asked to become a supervisor and stay a couple more years.... she said she would think about it........

She got up to leave, stopped at the door and said she gave it some serious thought and said NO.

Well, it's official. Today is my first official day of retirement! Or, unemployment, depending on how you define it!

Nothing really planned for today, other than driving to the office to turn in my equipment, and then cut some grass.
Congratulations!
I hope to join you in 2 months or so.
(only 7 or 8 more Tuesdays to go)

I am seriously thinking of joining this club at the end of the year. My last day in the office might be Christmas Eve. I will be a few months shy of age 50 :) Hubby is 66 and retired in early 2020 before Covid. I have an awesome job and could possibly go part-time, but I really want to travel 4 to 6 months a year while hubby and I still have the energy and good health. I am already a hybrid employee 2 days a week, but I can't be a long-term remote or international employee. I also have too many other things I want to do, hobbies, and large projects on the horizon such as a home remodel and addition. I just don't have the energy to do it all anymore. Some days I just want to go to the lake, mountain bike, or play pickleball with my husband instead of going to work. It will be hard to leave my longtime professional identity, community, and colleagues behind though. All the retirement calculators, 3 financial planners, and the financially conservative inner voice in my head say we are good to go.

Be careful with that addition! I’ve thought about having one until I was quoted $300 to $500 a square foot and that might even be low now.
We are seasoned remodelers, will be our own general contractors, and will probably be doing the plumbing and electrical work ourselves; maybe some of the kitchen, flooring, trim, painting, drywall hanging, etc. It really depends on quality references, quotes, and how we feel. I am hoping we can keep the addition to $200/SF.

I have recently retired and I feel like I have more energy for my hobbies now.

When I was working, I would have a little time each day for hobbies. But often I did not feel up to doing them.

I feel like there are upward spirals and downward spirals. I know that exercise and spending time on hobbies makes me feel better. But when I feel really burned out, I don't have the energy for either. Then I feel even worse.

But now that I have energy to do them, I feel better. And that gives me more energy to do them more.

I am not at the point where I want to be yet, but I am moving in a positive direction.

Oh, our contract was extended until January of 2026, so I *might* stay that long. My spouse has the more stressful job by far, and so I might keep working until we see what happens with the ACA and the markets.

I am not sure which month but I am sure it will be in 2025. Can't wait to be able to sleep as much as I want to.
I hear you! My working life has revolved around alarm clocks. Gotta get up when I need to, not when I want to, because of a stupid job. Sometimes having to be at work as early as 4:30 am. That’s my biggest gripe about work—having to work on a schedule instead of when I want to.

Now, as I think back on that, I reflect upon what sort of jobs might provide this flexibility. I suppose an accountant or a writer, but neither am I which.

This is actually a huge plug for being FIRE and makes me surprised more aren’t—your schedule becomes your own and not someone else’s.
