Costco comments and questions

First time (last night) I went to Costco for an Rx only. My cat had a UTI and had a reaction to the first antibiotic the vet gave her. This new antibiotic is not stocked at the vets and they suggested Costco as Costco will compound/constitute into liquid form...yeah!

Anyway, they asked if I was a member and I gave them my card. The cost of the antibiotic is shown as about $40, however, they charged me only $14. Perhaps you get a discount with membership?
Anybody can use the Costco pharmacy. But, Costco members get to use their discount service.

Interesting, I wasn’t aware Costco had preferred pricing for members. I think this explains why my total prescription cost is lower than what is calculated by the Medicare Plan D tool and Wellcare.
I'm going to be checking their costs with DH's Xarelto. Our other Rxs are no or low cost but the Xarelto . I'm willing to put up with some inconvenience if the costs are much lower. We are on Medicare.

Edit: Never mind. A couple of years ago I had to get the Rx filled at Costco and the price was the same.

Perhaps. I have never found the Medicare calculation of the cost to me of various Part D plans to be highly accurate.

Costco now has in-warehouse pickup for certain online items! Just tried it, bought some Apple AirPods Pro 2s w/Applecare+ on Black Friday special and opted for in-warehouse pickup as I was going to be away on the estimated delivery date. Item arrived in warehouse 3 days early and I received a PIN code this afternoon. Weekends are always busy, but this Saturday was the first with extended holiday season shopping hours. So I went there after normal closing time, but 30 minutes before the new closing time, and it was not busy. The lockers at my site were next to the customer service desk, past the cashiers. Punch the code into the touch screen, and the locker opened. Mine was all the way at the bottom, had to get down on my knees to retrieve the mailing package. There was a button on the screen if in-person help was needed.

Always good to have options. Costco is definitely on the trailing edge of innovation though!

Not only that, but now Costco online also shows you if a particular online item is also available in your local warehouse!

This is huge for us.

We recently discovered this when looking for 9 volt batteries, wondering if our Costco carried them as we were going the next day.

I’ve used the Costco locker pickup several times for expensive items. I have them shipped to a nearby store in the next county with a lower sales tax. If they shipped it to my home, I would be stuck paying more sales tax. I go by that warehouse at least once a week, so why not.

Just because the Costco app claims that an item is in stock, doesn't mean you can find it in the same spot it was at the last time! There's a book title for that:

"Who Moved My Cheese?"

I noticed there's also prescription locker pickup.

I don't think driving to the next county pencils out for me, but good to know that geoarbitrage may be an option for others!

Interestingly, the online info told us which aisle it was on and showed the location on the aisle.

Plus I know Costco is famous for moving stuff, but it rarely happens in our store, and when it does it’s nearby.

Also we’re list shoppers so we’re rarely distracted,

I tracked down a manager at Costco because they ceased stocking an item that I wanted to continue to purchase there. I finally extracted the following "explanation" from the manager: "Our supplier could not reliably meet our stocking needs because we sold the product more quickly than they could make it!"

I told the guy that I would buy it whenever they had it but he said "Costco isn't gonna carry something they can't keep on the shelves."

I pointed out 5 items I looked for every time I was in the store that were rarely on the shelves - but WERE occasionally. The manager shrugged so I give up. I'll take what they have when they have it I guess. YMMV

That’s great! I didn’t see that location feature for items in my warehouse, was that through the app or directly through costco.com?

If you see an asterisk in the top right corner of the shelf price tag, that means the item is not going to be stocked any more. Or at least in that configuration. Sometimes mfr changes the size or packaging, so Costco sells out the stock on hand. Or it's a seasonal type thing. The asterisk tells you it won't be restocked.

Wow, that's good info to have. It might help me to stock up next time I see the asterisk. Thanks

I thought everyone knew that about Costco prices.
The asterisk means it won't be there much longer.
A price ending in .97 is a clearance item and again, won't be there long.
A price ending in .00 or .88 is (according to rumor) a manager's special at that store only.

Good info to have, but where do you find out these things? (Does it go along with the double secret handshake?)

First I've heard of these useful pieces of info and I've been a Costco member for 17 years IIRC.

I recently bought an item at Costco that didn't have a listed sale price but had a very significant discount at the register. On that basis, I went back and got more and THEN found out, the discount was only for 5 each (full price for more than 5.) NOTHING was spelled out on the listed price. I bought more later and, sure enough, the sale was still in effect (with the 5-only limit) and STILL no indication on the posted price. I'm talking about a couple of weeks or more here. Eventually (maybe a month+) the price went back to the posted price.

You might want to sign up for their mailings. Lots of otherwise unadvertised specials.
We do get fliers all the time and do take advantage from time to time. But the "keys" embedded in prices you mentioned aren't readily available as far as I know. Thanks.

LOL... one of my sisters uses he Kroger digital coupons... she tried to go back another day and buy the item... was told 'you already used that coupon'!!!

Kinda surprised they let you buy 5 more... I am sure they are like Sam's and Sam's know everything that I have ever bought from them...

DH looked it up ahead of time through Costco.com.
I keep checking the app and Costco.com before each trip. Using the app, I can see if an item is in stock at my warehouse, but not the location. Hopefully that feature gets rolled out at my warehouse soon!

Reddit /r/costco is one place.

It’s kind of like secret menu items, like a 3X3 Animal-style Protein-style at In-N-Out.

Online store and coupon book. Plus, you need to learn the secret handshake and use your PHONE APP!
