Dash Cam - an example of its usefulness

WOW, glad you had the proof. Just curious how would he make money on the fraud? Injuries against her insurance by claiming she hit him and he has permanent injuries. Not disputing what you're saying, I just don't understand how the criminal mind works. Driving backwards through an intersection sounds more like a suicide attempt to me.

Glad it worked out for you!

DD was lucky a couple of weeks ago. She came back to her parked car and the front bumper was partially ripped off. She was parked on the street, next to a driveway, and a larger jeep cut it too close pulling into the driveway and hit her car. No note on the car and no damage to his car.

While DD was trying to figure out what to do, and about to call the police to file a report, the guy came out of the house and admitted he hit her car and gave her his insurance info. She got lucky and kudos to him for taking responsibility.

Otherwise, beyond filing the report, probably not much she could do.

I am curious, what kind of dash-cam do you have? I’m thinking it might be a worthwhile investment.

Tesla's have built in cameras that are constantly recording. You can save a clip either by hitting the display screen or honking your horn.

I got swiped by the trailer being pulled by a pickup truck that never stopped. That night when I finally figured out how to access the video I had a clear shot of him coming up alongside from behind showing his license plate and more shots of the company name on the side of the truck as well as several angles of the trailer swiping me.

When parked, you can turn on sentry mode and the cameras will record anything that comes too close to the car. You can also view the cameras remotely from your phone and even talk into the phone and have it come out of the external microphone in a voice distorted mode.

That’s exactly what I think he was trying … make it look like daughter rear ended him in the intersection and then claim he was injured to get a settlement from daughters (our) insurance.

it wasn’t his car. He was driving a rental car from Hertz and we had a heck of a time getting the rental documents from Hertz. Finally got them and daughter’s car was repaired at a cost to his insurance policy on the rental.

My guess is that it wasn't necessarily the type of fraud where people intentionally slam on the brakes to get a crash and settlement.

Rather, it was a mistake this person made. As a rental, perhaps they weren't familiar with it and once gone in reverse instead of forward, then had difficulty with brake and accelerator during the panic.

Then when the event happened, they realized the damage was all rear end damage and were "smart" enough to think they could get away with it by blaming the person with front end damage. That's still fraud. Just like manslaughter is still killing someone and you still go to jail.

The reason I have a dash came is because of a similar incident. I was "front ended" by a truck in front of me who reversed into me. When it happened, I thought I was screwed because it sure looked like I rammed into him. No witnesses. Thankfully, he immediately admitted it and had some of the best insurance on earth (Erie).

There was a thread here a long while back talking about dash cams. I thought about it, but so many choices. I finally bought one (F70) that had parking mode recording. It was pretty cheap, at $70. Now they have a "pro" version that has wifi...I need to pop the memory chip out to view recordings. Anyway, it turns out to get parking mode to work, you can't use the cigarette socket connector wire that came with it (not enough conductors). The wire capable of powering parking mode was $40! So I ordered the appropriate connectors and got out my soldering iron.

I was going to order another one and put it on the rear window, but they only are selling the pro, which is between $80 and $100, and I don't think I really "need" one facing backwards.

I think I have a higher chance of getting rear ended than hitting someone in front as I try to keep a good distance. So I don’t understand why front facing cameras are more common.

They are both useful. I have rear facing in both my cars too. One is in my rear window, devoted to the rear view. The other is combined with the front, so I see the interior of the car (and me) along with the view through the rear. Probably enough to show intent of those behind.

Don't discount the front view too much. There are a lot of disputed bad left turns and red light running incidents that are solved with the front view. The case of me getting "front ended" by an errant reverser in front of me is unusual.

My Tesla got rear ended by a car behind me that was hit from behind them. I had no damage, but my video clearly showed the car that hit me was pushed from a full stop. They needed it for their proof.

I use the sentry security cam when I leave my car in tight spots like parking garages. Peace of mind and it will alert me in real time if the car is touched.

I have dash cams in my car and motorhome. But with the proliferation of cameras in newer cars I wish they were able to record and use as a dash cam.

I'm certain the ability to record will soon become an option on new vehicles, probably tied to a subscription fee.
