I've always been a Dell laptop customer but they're making hard for me to be a customer this time around.

My current Dell bought the farm and I am in the process of replacing it. The new laptop will be a second PC in the hamshack at the house and also go with us when we travel.

During this process I have learned that Dell no longer includes a LAN port on their consumer grade Inspiron laptops. LAN ports ARE available on their business class Latitude laptops but those machines are several hundred $ more expensive with a 1-yr all-hazard warranty vs 3-yr for the Inspiron. HP still provides a LAN port on some of their laptops. I know very little about HP lapfops but the one I have configured is an HP Victus 14-fa1005ndr @ $1000. A Dell Latitude 3550 configured the way I want similar to the HP runs about $1250.

The $ are not a concern and I definitely want the LAN port but I have no experience with HP. This post is directed to those who have used HP laptops, specifically the Victus line and more specifically to those who have used both Dell and HP laptops. I'd love to hear your experiences.

Thanks.

if you prefer wired Ethernet and Dell Inspiron laptops, buy a USB-C hub with an ethernet port. A quick search on Amazon shows there are many popular models from $16.99 to $49.99.

Thanks for the suggestion

I've had HP laptops for a long time and had very good life. My current one is an Envy, over 4 years old. Still works great but HP warns me that parts are no longer available. I don't care that Ethernet ports are disappearing as I never use one anymore. What I don't like is CD/DVD drives are gone. I'm only finding them on 3 or 4 year old NOS.

One downside with Dell is that they will build the computer with the lowest price components. So a laptop built one week may have different components that one built a week later.
That's why I now stick with HP.

I have lamented that too although I usually only use it when I borrow a DVD movie from the library. Fortunately there is a HP external CD/DVD that is a reasonable price.

I'd buy a MAC. They keep running forever, and free software outside of Microsoft. Way cheaper over time, and CONSISTENT. But I know thats a sensitive comment. But since 1984 it's worked for me. My 12 year old Macbook is a server (in my home) working just fine! It fully shares and serves my home system and backups (all built into MAC OSX). Anyway, it might be new to you, but it is so smooth going forward. IMHO

My experience (not recent) with HP computers has not been stellar. With Dell it has been great.

But today is your choice. I would probably go with a Dell business system. Wait for a sale or refurb?

Since you have a wired connection, it would also work to get a cheap WiFi router for the primary use.

My last PC was an HP and I was very happy with it. Proactively replaced it after 7 years with an HP Victus and I love it. I got it at Costco for quite a good price.
