I think after dating now in-laws DD for almost 7 years, the more "ceremonial ask" was out of tradition. I can't remember if I had talked it over whether I should with DW, but I know DFIL always opens the door for MIL, and I try... so perhaps asking permission would be the right thing to do.
DW did not know I was going to propose to her. DMIL jumped out of her boots as I sort of asked both at the same time. She said "YES! YES! YES!"
