Do you use the soaps and hair products at hotels?

We bring our own. Soap silvers go into a little baggie that travels with us to use for washing our hands. Shower soap and shampoo we bring our own to use.

Why not use the soap, shampoo, lotions, etc. provided by the hotel. It saves me from hauling around more bottles, tubes and such.
Because they don’t work as well as the products you use at home and may even cause irritation?

1-3 days I use what is there. A longer trip ( which was mostly to the UK) I would buy things once I got there if needed.

Got home an hour ago from a 56 hour getaway to Santa Barbara and Ojai.

Not only do I use the all their products, I take them home. This trip netted 6 bars of soap and a tiny bottle of shampoo. A few other items found their way into my bag as well. Most trips net 10x that amount.

Back in my 20's I used to go to Vegas every so often with friends or family. At one point I had about 500 bottles (the little kind) from pretty much every hotel that existed in Vegas, as well as the occasional other vacation location. And I don't settle for one bottle per stay, there's ways to get a lot more than one bottle a night. I have a couple cupboards dedicated to housing what I've picked up. I could post some pictures that would garner disdain/admiration depending on your viewpoint.

I don't believe I've ever bought soap or shampoo (and more) in my life. Yes some of you would balk at using stuff that gets old over time but I see no effect using stuff I collected over the years.

Most of the hotel/motel chains are switching from those little tiny soaps and shampoos to these:

DW likes to collect those little shampoos and soaps, too, but they're getting harder to find nowadays.

I usually enjoy trying out at least some of the hotel products, e.g. shower gel and moisturizers but not hair products.

However, while I'm cognizant of waste, I don't like the idea of using from the big bottles you often see in the shower - I want sanitary single-guest size bottles, otherwise I won't use.

Just use the mini hand soaps. I'm sensitive to scents so all of our stuff is unscented. DW will occasionally use the conditioner.
Years ago DW would always take the mini soaps, shampoo, conditioners, etc. whenever we'd stay at a hotel. Had a crate full of them. After Hurricane Katrina she donated them to the local shelters. They were happy to get them to hand out to the people staying there.

I see you forum name is well earned! 🤣

Body wash never works for me. I have to have bar soap.

We’re on a long trip through Japan and Korea. We carried on and need to pack light so we are definitely using the amenities. So far at almost every Japanese hotel, the products are better than what I use at home.

Based on previous Asia trips I had expected slippers to be provided (although I pack my own). But I’m amazed at what else is provided, included in the nightly price…toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, comb/brushes. Heck they even set out pajamas in the room. I feel bad for any Japanese folks vacationing in America for the first time who might not pack these items assuming US hotels are similar. 😂

Agree that most hotels are switching to the refillable pump bottles. We actually just tossed a collection of dozens of little hotel bottles of shampoo and conditioner since they're all at least 5 years old.

The only thing I occasionally bring with me is a small tube of lotion if I'm going on a long trip to a dry climate. Otherwise, I just use what's there.

I keep the travel sizes just in case. Use leftovers. When I travel too much, i consolidate everything into one junk shampoo container.

Little Bitty Bar Soap for the Win ! 😁

We had collected several Grocery Sacks full of all the leftover Bar Soaps and little Bottles of Toiletries from all the Road Trips over the years. This was to be prepared for the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse 🧟‍♂️

Just a couple of months ago, in a moment of weakness, ms gamboolgal convinced me to gather it all up and give it to a Homeless Shelter.
Ha ! It was for a good cause.

I have been a unapologetic Pack Rat forever and I blame growing up with Parents and Grandparents and Relatives who was all Poor Farmers and Industrial Workers in the Depression here in Texas - and making do with what they had and never get rid of anything because it might come in handy one day.
Hell I remember my Grandfather, a WW1 Veteran, straightening old Nails at there Farm - where I also watched him plow the fields with Mules.

Being from Texas, ms gamboolgal was dreading having to deal with the normal native Texans Firearms, NFA goodies and Ammo stash - remember the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse 🧟‍♀️.

But I have contacted a best friend from Childhood who works at a major Sporting Goods Store who will bring the Mack Truck and Forklift once I Cross Over The Jordan and he will sell all of the "Valuable Collectors Items" for her. Seriously this was a good thing to get addressed.

I also admit that I had a weakness for nice custom made knives and short swords over the years. Same comment - good friend will take care of it for her when the time comes.

We need to take some more Poker Road Trips so we can start stocking up on all the little Bar Soap and Toiletries and Coffee and Tea Pods again... valuable commodities for the pending Zombie Apocalypse

I always bring my own, full-sized, bar of soap. I detest the shower gel pumps that now seem so prevalent in even upscale hostels.

Same. I can't stand body wash. It just doesn't work like bar soap. Sometimes for a 1-night stay if I really want to keep my bag light, I'll skip bringing my own and just use the little bar the hotel provides to shower. Even the places that have switched to pumps in the shower all still have bars at the sink.

We usually bring and use our own (for the most part). But we also take the hotel supplied products home and donate them to shelters here.

A man after my own heart. I haven't bought any soap / shampoo since 2000 and my stockpile hasn't shrunk in all that time. I suspect I will never buy any again at this rate.

If it gets me clean, I'll use it. OTOH, I'm not a fan of liquid "body wash" or whatever and am considering packing my own, familiar bar soap for an upcoming trip.

As an aside, I'm reminded of a story told me by my mom about her uncle and aunt. Mom was helping clean out the house after their passing and said they found literal bushel baskets of tiny soaps barely used. My great aunt was a hotel maid and lived through the great depression, and apparently hoarded the leftover soaps from the hotel rooms over the years. Bless their hearts; I guess one never quite gets over an experience like that.

I have asthma so everything has to be fragrance free so I need to bring my own. If I get to the hotel and they are fragrance free then I will use them.

This is my experience with the body wash as well. Impossible to lather up. I'll take it for a night or two, but have started to pack my own bar soap for longer trips.

....

My problem with motels is that most of them got rid of the clock radios. I really liked listening to a local rock station in the room if I could find a decent station. And it was nice having a clock in the room. If there is a clock next to the bed, it's one of those new ones with no radio but a bunch of USB ports that I don't need. And now they're getting rid of the in-room phones as well. I stayed at a motel a week and a half ago and there was a phone in the room... but it was dead. Luckily I didn't need to call the front desk.
I like that they are getting rid of the little radio alarm clocks, ever since I was in a hotel and the alarm went off at 3 am

I have also found it's hard to be sure the alarm is set properly as every hotel is different.

Now I just use my cell phone alarm clock and I make sure the hotel clock is off or unplugged.

Ah, Ha! Now I know who has been unplugging the clocks in all the motel rooms.

Now I just need to figure out who is unplugging all the bedside lamps.

(we don't own any cell phone alarm clocks)
