Are either Fidelity or Vanguard offering free or discounted TurboTax this year? I haven't seen anything on either site regarding that this year. Usually there is a small discount or free Federal filing or something if I log on through one of those portals.

Maybe they have quit doing so? If so, is there a better alternative I should be looking at? I've been using TT online since 1997 or so.

Check this thread for Fidelity TurboTax offers 2025 Tax Software deals - For April 2026 Filing

As far as I know Vanguard hasn’t offered TT for years.

Fidelity has been promoting 25% off on the initial page I see after signing in to my account for at least a month. I have to scroll down to see it. Perhaps it’s hidden in a panel you hid by the customizable screen capability.

It gets better. My laptop should probably be replaced as it's quite out of date, so I get to buy a PC and then do my taxes.
A couple of years ago, I replaced my laptop with a refurbished business-class machine. It’s better built, and lasts longer, and costs just $250. Win11 was installed already. I liked it so much that I replaced my wife’s laptop too.
Doing taxes has been a breeze. I’ve been using TaxHawk for over 10 years, federal is always free, and state costs $15.99. It handles almost everything, and I don’t have to chase discounts. For 2025, it got even better: I downloaded all the relevant PDFs, uploaded them to TaxHawk, and it used them to automatically fill in the details. The only things missing are the 1099s (DIV, INT, B), which will be available next month. So far, it’s taken me 10–15 minutes. Add another five minutes for the 1099s, and I’m done.

Where did you find these laptops?

I looked harder and see it at the bottom of the page. Thanks.

Great! I didn’t see it until a week after I bought mine from Amazon. But I still got a good price. I’ve seen comments on another site that following the Fidelity link was a very convoluted process to successfully get the discount.

This site is full of millionaires. I can’t believe people are sweating over $20–$30 with so much effort.

I found these laptops at a local store that specializes in repairing electronics. They gave me free warranty for 90 days.
See one example on Amazon. This should be OK for most users. I have another brand with similar specs. I think Amazon lets you return within 90 days, definitely within 30 days. See (link). Call and ask.

I refuse to be coerced into changing my OS for TT. I've been a TT customer for decades but no more so I switched to H&R Block tax software. It read and loaded my TT file from last year EZ-PZ. Basically the same interview just a different presentation.

I tried using TT for my son, (24 and uncomplicated return), but they wanted to ding him $75 for a simple 1040. I ended up using FreeTaxUSA from the IRS website. No charge, and he's already got his state refund.

I just finished my taxes this past week using TurboTax and it was free through Fidelity. I was expecting just a 25% discount, but I guess I got it free due to the balance I have in Fidelity (over $1.M).

The Fidelity free TT offer is random. I got it for several years, then the last couple of years, I only got 25% discount.

I always took advantage of the Fidelity TT discount in the past. This is the first year I was offered the TT Premium edition for free. Are you saying the free Premium offer was only offered to randomly selected customers? What is the criteria for getting the free offer? I'm short of having $1 M with them but I do have a portion ($250 K) in a managed account.

Yes. I got it free for several years then didn't, so I called them and they said it was not tied to $ amount. Enjoy the free TT while it lasts. I looked into the TaxHawk that someone mentioned. It looks pretty easy to use and seems accurate. I'm going to compare it to TT this week when I get all of 1099's.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that there are no definite criteria.
This has been discussed endlessly for years, both here and on Bogleheads, and for every person who thinks they have cracked the code, there will be at least two others who say they meet those conditions but didn't get it, and still two more who say they didn't meet the conditions but did get it.

Pointless to try to figure it out. Just enjoy it if you have it.
