Don't come to the mountains of North Carolina

I have a friend who has electricity, water and internet, so while my dishes and clothes are getting clean, I thought I would check in. I am filling every container I have with water. Some for drinking. Some for toilet flushes. I am charging every device that I could use, including my UPS box and electric toothbrush. The gym in town is open, so I workout daily and shower there.

Many churches and charities in Boone are giving out free things but I believe they should be for those in real need. I could get breakfast from Church A, lunch from the homeless center and dinner from Church B. In-between, I could visit the places giving out free food and supplies. There are also doctors and banks offering services for free.

I have lost some things in my refrigerator. I have not opened my freezer but I suspect it is all bad. We lost power after two days of the hurricane. My weather station recorded about 14 inches of rain before we lost power. I suspect we got another 5 to 10 inches. I was off the family visiting family so I had to suffer through visiting with grand-babies, carryout Greek and carryout Indian.

We didn't come home until power was restored, then 3 days later, we lost it again. Since we are on a well, no power = no water. I can use my phone as a mobile hotspot, but signal in the mountains, is really weak. Since we have already had power restored once, this latest outage puts us at the bottom of the list and there are thousands ahead of us. Now 6 days after the hurricane, 32% of the county is without power.

I am very upbeat because: 1) I lost virtually nothing except for a little food in refrig/freezer, 2) I am hearing from old friends and family that I have not heard from in years, 3) driving around (not much, as they really want to have those roads clear for utility trucks, backhoes, etc.) there is some amazing damage. Downed trees, roads being washed out, houses moved/destroyed by mudslides. It is incredible seeing this devastation up close. 4) The devastation could have been much worse. Check out Swannanoa, Biltmore Village, and a few others.

I won't check in again until power is restored or I leave town. Probably.

Wow, best of luck. I was without power for 9 days after Hurricane Isabelle, but on city water so still had that and I could grill on the gas grill. Things like this will teach one the hard way about having emergency supplies!

Best wishes to you. The pictures of the devastation are incredibly sad. Rebuilding will take some time.
We have been without power for 7 days after a snowstorm.
Small butane stove for heating soups to eat, and warming water to take a spit bath, and a small woodstove to heat one area.

Hope the best for everyone over there. Our last big storm did bring the locals "together" though.

Best of luck to you!

I would recommend you empty/trash the fridge and freezer contents. If you leave them in there too long, the smell will permeate the walls of the inside, and you'll lose those appliances as they won't be able to be in your house any more.

In laws found that out the hard way on a vacation house.

As far as "those in real need" I am happy there is no gating and no checking. I doubt many would take advantage, and prefer food and help go to those that show up and ask, without some sort of criteria.

Z--Wishing you all the best. I have a home in Banner Elk but my primary residence is in Chapel Hill so I am staying away from the mountains now. I am afraid the recovery will take years.

^ This, definitely this...
Indeed. It took a large amount of bleach to clean my garage meat freezer after the GFCI tripped while we we on vacation. So I would empty the fridge and freezer now. Wipe them down well with bleach and leave the doors propped open.

You have the best attitude and hope you can maintain it. Things can be repaired/replaced. You, your family and neighbors are what matter. Hope things are back to normal soon.

OP here. This second outage has left us without power for 97 hours now. And the number of homes involved in my little transformer blowout was 26. Now they're saying it is 44 homes. I don't know how the number grew.

I decided to leave the mountains. So yesterday I took your advice and threw out everything in the refrigerator and freezer and cleaned the inside walls.

I'm now staying with family off the mountain. They have electricity, water and internet. And I can flush every time I use the toilet.

There are a lot of resources being thrown at this. The problem they are trying to overcome now is to coordinate and organize all these volunteers and all these supplies that are coming in. Samaritan's purse which is headquartered in Boone is taking a leadership role and that is a good thing. The local governments are just not experienced in this kind of thing.

Hang in there OP! Good that you moved in with family having the essentials.

I’ve seen videos of what you folks are going through. Brutal.

Nothing like losing the ability to flush the toilet to give one a real appreciation of the real luxuries in life, like indoor plumbing. Glad your are safe with family. Wishing you and your community all the best!

Best of luck, your attitude is great. The longest we ever went without power was 54 hours near Chicago - I can’t imagine anything longer, like your experiencing. Just awful the destruction in parts of WNC - it will take years, or maybe never, for some of the hardest hit areas to recover?

Thanks for this perspective. I drive between KC and SC a couple of times a year to visit family so have done the drive over the mountains many times. Looks like I may need to fly next time but that's petty considering what you in the area are experiencing. No need for me to clog the alternate routes for pleasure travel.

Niece and her husband just bought a vacation home in Beech Mountain and can't get there to assess damage but apparently that area wasn't too badly affected.. I feel bad for my brother and SIL, who have a son and granddaughters living in Hopkinsville, KY (son is divorced). They do see the granddaughters a few times a year but that's going to be a lot more complicated.

Z3Dreamer, hope you were able to return to your house. It's amazing what has happened to Western NC since Helene. We visited Black Mountain, Barber Orchard, and Waynesville 2 weekends ago - after calling the businesses, checking Google Maps, Waze, and DriveNC.gov. There were no problems getting around as long as we stayed where the maps said. And the locals were thrilled to see us! As of Dec 3rd these places are open and ready for business.

DW and planning to visit Blowing Rock, fully open for business. Western NC desperately needs our support, I hope folks will visit after doing their due diligence - many but not all cities/towns are open.
