DW and I are "Naturalized" US Citizens - Do we Apply Online or Apply in Person for Social Security?

DH is a naturalized citizen. He applied for Medicare in 2024, and did have to go in with his original documents - which included an original birth certificate (which I luckily had in a folder from when we got married).

not to hijack the thread, but my wife just applied online and she got an email saying they may call her? Is this a scam? I wouldn't think SSA would call.

It feels very uncomfortable but yes, they do send and e-mail saying that they may call. They did call DH.

Well it's been over a month and I've never received a letter yet from Social Security although a couple of weeks ago I did miss a call from an 800 number that AI said it might be a call from a Social Security office. I called SSA last week and talked to a lady who couldn't see anything holding up the process and she said they did already have a copy of my citizenship certificate. She suggested I take my drivers license and passport over to the local office and she set me up with an appointment for the next day. It was basically in and out with no wait whatsoever although I wasn't that impressed with the clerk that helped me. He didn't seem to have any idea why I was there and asked if I was applying for citizenship. Luckily I had brought that document and gave it to him as well. He made copies and sent me on my way and so far nothing has changed. I'm a natural worrier so I'm panicking thinking maybe someone is already claiming my benefits. I don't want to be pushy and call back again but on another thread here someone posted that he was still waiting to hear from the same center that's processing my claim and I think it had been 4 months since he applied. In his case it was eventually resolved but I'd rather not wait that long if I don't have to. If I don't hear anything within a couple more weeks, I'll ask on the Reddit Social Security group that seems to have some pretty knowledgeable people in there that might have some advice on how to proceed.
Also when calling SSA and leaving your number for a call back rather than wait on hold for 2 hours, be prepared for all the personal information they will need to verify you. I was pretty uncomfortable with the process and at one point considered hanging up on her it was so invasive.

I wouldn't worry about being "pushy." Just call and say you want to check on the status of your application and confirm that they have all necessary documentation. IIRC, DH's approval went though quickly after he went down to the SS office.

I just read your previous post regarding your husbands application and they never asked for my birth certificate, It makes sense that they would need it though so I hope I can find it.

I just went over to the SS website. It indicates that a US passport is also acceptable proof of age, but I am also a natural worrier and would call to make sure that everything is being processed.

Woo Hoo I got the e-mail overnight that my application was accepted and it looks like I'll get my first check next week.
Like many others I was going to wait till 70 but when I saw how much I could get right now at full retirement age, I didn't think twice.
So from start to finish my application took a little over 5 weeks to be approved. I applied online in SoCal and it was processed by the Richmond California office somewhere close to San Francisco. So today I'm making plans on how to spend my new found wealth on the repairs and upgrades that I've been stalling on. Life is good....
