Each of our Debit cards used fraudulently one day after another. DH had never used his.

Banks like to give you the debit card for ATM access, but you might be able to get an ATM-only card. That's what I did, but it flopped. The only time I get cash from an ATM is for weird overseas situations. The ATM-only card worked in the US, but even though the European ATM's had networks that matched what was printed on the card, the transactions wouldn't go through. Next trip, I had the Visa logo card, same networks printed on the card, and it worked.

For those that don’t use debit cards, how do you access ATM? That is the only time I use mine and I am annoyed that BofA no longer supports ATM withdrawals via their app. I think I can keep the debit card in my smartphone wallet.
I rarely use an ATM. Most of my bank branches have drive-up ATMs but no walk-up ATMs. Since I had left shoulder surgery a while back trying to use a drive-up ATM is uncomfortable.

When I need cash I just go inside a local bank branch. We don't use a lot of cash and one withdrawal usually lasts at least a month. Lines are usually short and quick. Walking inside is not inconvenient for me.

I almost always go to a teller when I need cash because I need $1, $5, and $10 bills and can’t get them all at the ATM.

Same. One of my main uses for cash is tipping.

Yeah, I gave up on the ATM only card a long while ago. These days locking the card online works well for us since we almost never use the ATM. We have different cards for international ATM use (no transaction fee) and those cards remained locked otherwise.

I have done this, but I still had to swipe my debit card and enter my PIN in a small box in front of the teller.

Same thing happened to me, but twice, at a different bank.

I only have the debit card in case of emergency and I need cash. Don't think I ever used it after activating it. Noticed a small transaction on bank statement it said was from my debit card. Called bank and told them I don't use my card and the transaction was not from me. They canceled my card, reversed the transaction and sent me a new card in the mail.

About 1 year later, same thing happened again with my 2nd card. I activated the card when I received it but never used the card. Noticed another small transaction from the card that I didn't make. Bank reversed transaction, canceled card and sent me another one.

Closely watching statements to see if it happens again with my 3rd card.

My wife and I have our own debit cards with this bank on a joint account but her card has not been comprised, just mine.
Just set up instant notifications on any and all bank and credit card transactions. Within seconds of a debit or credit on your account(s) you'll get a text to your smart phone, tablet, etc.

I always have a $1000+ cash in my gun cabinet, so I have my own ATM, except when I travel than I use a debit card. I come home with 100 euros every trip.

Can this work when the debit card is locked ? That would be perfect for me as I never use my ATM card except in front of the teller to "prove" my id and accnt #.
Perhaps not. The thing is BofA uses your debit card as an ID. You swipe the card and enter a PIN, or alternatively they text you a code to give them. If I were pulling funds out even at the teller I would expect to unlock the card temporarily which can be done from the app.

I have never used my debit card for anything other than at an ATM. In 2017 after we had been living in England for over a year I received an alert that my US debit card had been used to buy some small item in a grocery store in small town, USA with a $50 cash back requested. The transaction was blocked and I cancelled the card. No idea how the card had been cloned.

While we use a drive up ATM for cash, especially on multi-week camping trips, we walk into our home bank sometimes so we can request a variety of bills. The ATM only gives us $20's. It's handy to have some $1's, $5's and $10's in your wallet for tipping, etc.

I made sure the debit card was linked only to our checking acct (not also to the savings or MM accts) and don't keep the checking acct too fat.

I don't have bank apps on my phone nor do I use my phone to receive bank/financial notifications. Call me paranoid I guess. My DW periodically checks credit card and bank transactions to the penny so we will know if there are any unauthorized transactions we didn't make.

How do you get cash?
One method I use is when I go out to dinner with family or friends and split the bill, I put the entire amount plus tip on my credit card and pocket the cash from the others.

I purposefully don't have bank apps on my phone, I'm too likely to lose my phone, and if away from home, would have no way to change my passwords.

Still I might give the lock a try and see if it still works at the teller.

Why would you need to change your password? Just having your phone doesn’t give someone any easier access to your account. They’d still need to be able to log in with your password or Face ID.

Crazy. It's so easy to check my bank accounts on my phone using the Apps.

If you do lose your phone, you can remote lock/wipe if it's an iPhone. I suspect you can do the same with Android.

A few years ago, I received a notification that my MC-branded debit card was used for a $50 transaction from that included the words GTL and INMATE. (G*TEL provides phone service to correctional institutions.) I immediately called my credit union, who had already cancelled the transaction. I never used the card except for ID at the credit union and to transfer money into Apple Cash. (This was before Apple Savings, which is what I now use to move money into Apple Cash.)

This is my only debit card. This account was originally opened to iMessage cash gifts. It is “air-gapped” and not connected to my other financial institutions, I actually deposit cash at the nearby and friendly B&M, and keep less than $1000 there. Now I use the debit card to autopay the T-Mobile bill. I have an ATM only card at my other credit union.

The ability to deposit checks with my phone is one of the greatest inventions in the history of banking.
Agree. It’s a huge benefit super convenient, massive timesaver. I try to minimize checks received, but it still helps tremendously.

Interesting. I didn’t know BofA no longer supported that. I had read about that option a while back, something about making a cash withdrawal appointment via the app. Must have been too easy to abuse or something.
I am hoping they bring it back. It was great when I needed cash from an ATM at night in an unfamiliar area. Some suggested it was due to lack of use but it was not easy to find the feature in the app. Instead of making it easier to find they deleted it.
