Each of our Debit cards used fraudulently one day after another. DH had never used his.

Crazy. It's so easy to check my bank accounts on my phone using the Apps.

If you do lose your phone, you can remote lock/wipe if it's an iPhone. I suspect you can do the same with Android.
This is like the ongoing dialogue I have with a few members of my family.

Why would you need to change your password? Just having your phone doesn’t give someone any easier access to your account. They’d still need to be able to log in with your password or Face ID.
Sometimes I'm out of internet range for days on end. A person with my phone could spend all day typing in the passcode to open it up, or keep trying finger print opening as I don't think those things are truly secure.

I'm assuming there is no way to plug another phone into the phone and just run an app to crack it open.

Once the phone is open, they could use the bank app.

I agree, it would be lovely. It's lovely on the computer.

I use Android, haven't really looked at remote wipes.

I only use my phone for phone and text really, don't even have data on it. I only pay about $5/mo for the phone.

We'll probably never know. In my experience the fraud department seldom tells you exactly what happened or what the aftermath was.
I've assumed they don't worry about it and consider limited levels of fraud as "acceptable" and part of doing business.

Honestly, we have not been to an ATM in eons. We have a cash "stash" we keep in the house safe for emergencies, that is what we use for our cash needs, which are minimal, and replenish it as required. Our CU is very local and easy to use. I drive right by it on the way to Aldi's, so no biggie. We do have debit cards but they are locked away, so in the really rare occasion that we need an ATM, they re available. The last time that was necessary was about 4 years ago.
Right. I just don't use an ATM any more. YMMV

There are many reasons why they won't tell.
Investigation may be ongoing, and the person asking could be a friend of the criminals or post about it online which would help the criminals.
The person being talked to may not be high enough to warrant telling them the details of every incident as it has nothing to do with their performance tasks.
Telling even in a general sense will again eventually make the information public, so will help criminals know how to avoid getting caught next time.

Iphones lock after 10 failed access attempts and requires you to use an apple website site or itunes to regain access. The internet access methods have similar restrictions and you could end up with a phone no better than a brick. I assume Android has similar protections.

They need your passcode to open your phone. Then they need your password and maybe your user id to use the bank app. It’s not nearly as easy as you’re making it sound. You’re talking about NSA level hacking.

with my iPhone my bank apps all have face authentication. I can also lock any app up with this or lock code.

Exactly. Someone who randomly finds a lost phone can’t just get into your bank apps.

Citizens is the only app that still doesn’t have Face ID. I complain on every survey.

Yep. Ours does $10, $20, and $100.
I'm pretty certain my bank's ATM can read my mind, and likes to play games with me. If I withdraw, say, $160 it gives me 2 50's and 3 20's, when I wanted all 20's. So now I make back to back withdrawals of $80 each. But when I need to pay my landscaper (cash), and withdraw $300 or so......I'll get all 20's. This has happened more than once, so clearly the only conclusion is my ATM is a mind-reader.

ETA: My bank ATM only distributes 20's and 50's.

Oh our ATMs ask how you want the cash. You can let it pick or you can choose it yourself.

Iphones lock after 10 failed access attempts
An iPhone will disable for 1 minute after six failed passcode attempts in a row. The seventh incorrect passcode attempt will lock you out for 5 minutes, the eighth attempt for 15, and the tenth for an hour.
You can also set it to erase itself after ten failed passcodes. That's not a problem for you, since you can restore it from a backup, but ruins the thief's chances.

Same thing happened to me, but twice, at a different bank.

I only have the debit card in case of emergency and I need cash. Don't think I ever used it after activating it. Noticed a small transaction on bank statement it said was from my debit card. Called bank and told them I don't use my card and the transaction was not from me. They canceled my card, reversed the transaction and sent me a new card in the mail.

About 1 year later, same thing happened again with my 2nd card. I activated the card when I received it but never used the card. Noticed another small transaction from the card that I didn't make. Bank reversed transaction, canceled card and sent me another one.

Closely watching statements to see if it happens again with my 3rd card.

My wife and I have our own debit cards with this bank on a joint account but her card has not been comprised, just mine.
I have mine set to not charge over $1.

Long before that, first, the person who finds it has to be a criminal in the first place! I don't know where everyone else hangs out and could loose their phone, but where I go, the clientele probably includes few criminals ready to pounce on a phone and maybe succeed at stealing something.

and not just bank apps. I have AMZ, email and a couple of other apps locked down. I don't have VG on my phone but that is because I have no use for it on my phone.

Very true. They need to be a criminal AND a fairly sophisticated hacker as well.

I have been hacked a couple of times this way. Once it was on a skimmer. The second time I have no idea how they got the information. That is why I have daily limits set on my card and I pay close attention to any emails/texts that inform my of charges that don't see correct. Oh and in both situations I got all of my money back.

Good security is layered. The more layers the better. Thieves are lazy and will usually switch to the easier path with fewer layers. Sort of like the “I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you” approach.

And also the more layers the more inconveniences to be dealt with. Balance is important.

I didn't put my bank app on my phone either. But my bank has text notifications for all activity that come to my cell. That's what I use, kind of a middle ground.

This is one reason that I have an ATM only card... no need to have a debit card as I will never use debit...

If a debit card can be used it also accepts a CC... I like the protection...

yes; unfortunately not all banks issue ATM only. I keep my card locked -- not much risk. Rarely used even for ATM.

I like the idea of setting a low transaction limit on the compulsory Visa or MasterCard bank/cu debit card. I'm going to investigate that. I'm pretty confident in keeping my PIN secret (like passwords, I don't re-use them), so it would be nice if the ATM withdrawal limit was separate from the debit transaction limit.
