Election Day is finally here

I don't know if this is true or not, but DW's friend in Tennessee said that 7 states are not selling alcohol today. She couldn't get a margarita today in Tennessee.
As I recall, back in 60s the bars were closed on election day in CA

DW and I plan to watch a movie or do a jigsaw puzzle tonight. Anything but watch the news. They will have nothing substantive to report until very late, or even for days, but they will certainly fill the air time talking about it.

I've been taking that attitude all along. I do my research a couple of weeks before, I prepare a sheet with my choices and I vote. The only TV I watch is commercial-free Netflix. People who went early this morning to my local polling place reported hour-long lines. I was there around 12:30 and went right in. They'd run out of "I voted" stickers! I think that's a good thing.

I voted today, Election Day. My state had only three, no excuse needed, early voting days. I had planned to vote early, but the lines were very long! My friends reported standing in line for an hour to an hour and a half. I waited until mid morning to give the folks who needed to vote before work a chance. It worked out wonderfully….no wait. A poll worker friend told me that it had been very busy when the polls first opened, but then cleared out. One of the many advantages of retirement…pick a time likely to not be busy.

We voted about a week ago during early voting. Dropped off our mail-in ballots at an early voting site. Did not have to wait in line. We handed them to a poll worker who checked them and dropped them into the voting box.

My brother voted today, waited until about 9:15 a.m. after the worker rush - no line.

I voted around 10:30 a.m. for the same reason and I only had 3 people to wait on to get checked in. Pretty smooth.

I voted early this time for the first time. I figured there may be long lines today. But, there were long lines for early day voting (10 days in our county). But they only have a few early voting sites, so you still end up with long lines. I may take a drive today just to see if there are lines at the polls near us.

I just got back from voting. They wouldn't let me look and they wouldn't answer me when I asked if my son was still on the voting rolls.

The polling place was packed. Definitely more turnout than in 2022 or 2020.

In the three months leading up to the election, I went online once a month and confirmed that my own voter registration was "active." I live in a swing state, and just wanted to be sure. Better safe than sorry, I felt.

I don't know about your county, but I am able to look up anyone's voter registration status ("active" or "inactive") for my county (and many surrounding counties) online at any time. Not how they voted, just whether or not their registration is active.

I think one reason for the information being public is so that folks can check their own status (as I did).

Hopefully your son's status is active where he currently lives/votes.

In our small town, with less than 200 registered voters, the polls don't open until noon.

I dropped off my ballot yesterday.
Today I’m picking up my grandkids from school because it’s a minimum day and then we are going to the pumpkin farm for treats. Luckily it’s right down the street from their school.
This is the last week that they are open for the season.
This should keep me busy until this evening.

I dropped cable last year and only watch non commercial shows. I’m so glad not to have to listen to those incessant political commercials.

I probably should have waited to vote today. The lines were long during early voting, but at least during the first hour this morning there was practically no line at my polling place. It opened at 6 am and I went by there twice during that first hour to see.
I like to vote early just in case I'm not easily able to go on election day. I had no line at all when I went, early last week I think. I live in a sparsely populated county though.

DW & I voted early by mail, it was a 4 page ballot with a lot of propositions. Fortunately the state provides several informative booklets ahead a of time with explanations & arguments.

I will not miss the negative ads. Also, I'm curious, if anyone here is OCONUS what are the political ads like in other countries?

Thanks to the poll workers. Here they are technically paid but the pay is a fraction of minimum wage... Kind of like jury duty

I remember bars and liquor stores being closed during poll hours. In college there was a bar down the street that normally opened at 6AM (yikes)... On election Day it didn't open till 8pm... Same with the liquor store next door.

I posted in another thread about how much states vary in how easy or hard it is to vote by mail or early in person vote. PA, in the 90s made it almost impossible to absentee ballot and I have my only missed election because if a last minute work trip and no way to absentee vote. California made permanent mail in voting available decades ago.

There were lines at our local polling place both times I went by it today. I'm surprised people waited till today.

+1. And there’s more poll workers now with early voting. Early voting was available here Monday-Friday 8:30 - 4:00 from Sept 26 through Nov 4 at the county courthouse. That’s almost 8 hrs a day all weekdays for more than a month. Kudos to everyone who made that possible.

I got early news from an exit poll person that Mickey Mouse is beating Bugs Bunny in a close race here in Pennsylvania.

Checked with our county and our ballots have been counted. Now watching the results from Portugal. Jet-lagged, so probably won’t last long to see the results.

Looks like there’s going to be a large turnout, which is great to see. Thanks to all that help in our elections.
