Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Is it just the pink color? Perhaps a sexy race car red would change your mind? Or fully chromed out model perhaps?

1. They look stupid.
2. The controls are either on the steering wheel or in the screen, including wipers and turn signals, are you kidding me?
3. They get stuck in even moderate off road conditions.
4. The glued on fenders fall off.
5. They are nearly impossible to repair, and insurance is exorbitant.
6. They have the same towing and load carrying range issues that all electric trucks have.
7. They are made by Tesla.

Any one of those seven disqualify it, together, they make it so I wouldn't drive one at any price, even if you paid me. I don't need a poseur vehicle that looks like an eight year old's scribbles and has all kinds of compromises. I need a TRUCK.

Volvo is recalling over 40k EV SUVs because of fire risk.

Volvo told Reuters on Monday that the recall is due to the risk of the battery pack overheating, which could lead to a potential fire.

“We are now contacting the owners of all affected cars to advise them of next steps,” Volvo said. The recall involves replacing modules in the affected vehicles’ battery packs. Volvo said it would replace the affected vehicles, free of charge.

In the meantime, the company is urging owners to park outside and limit charging to 70% to eliminate the risk of a fire.

The EX30 batteries are supplied by Volvo’s parent company, Geely, through its joint battery venture in China, Shandong Geely Sunwoda Power Battery Co. According to Volvo, the supplier has since fixed the issue and will provide the new battery cells.

Volvo EVs are such hot sellers. LMAO.

But seriously, the number of EVs from multiple companies that have been recalled for total battery replacement is insane. No wonder they don't sell as well as expected.

I can’t for the life of me understand your fascination with this thread. Some accurate statements, others total misinformation. You don’t like EVs, we get that by now…

I love EVs and am looking to get one soon. But I am not a fanboy, I actually take a balanced view of *everything* I do.

So I guess you don't believe that almost every EV manufacturer has had battery recalls?

There were 142,000 replacements, just for the Chevy Bolt.

Now, 40,000 Volvos.

BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai, Jaguar, and Ford have recalled EVs for battery replacements. They didn't replace every battery in every case, but they had to examine tens of thousands overall, and replace many.
Here is a link. Read it and tell me that my statement was incorrect. BTW, that article is 18 months old.

Here is the latest on the M-B recalls: Mercedes-Benz recalls EQB EVs for third time over battery fire risk

Grok says this is a misleading claim based on limited first year data. The numbers might math in the slice of time taken but overall the cyber truck is not massively more likely to have fire fatalities. Grok said that the Ford F-150 is more likely to catch fire than cyber truck. Grok also pointed out that most cyber truck fires were after high speed crashes where some of the pinto fires were spontaneous.

Very wrong on the Pinto... it never did spontaneously combust... it had to be hit from the rear...

Per AI: The Ford Pinto did not spontaneously combust

Also, a quick look shows 27 deaths due to fire... Tesla has 83 per a site I saw (it was a law firm site so not sure how accurate)...

Tesla has also faced scrutiny over vehicle fires. However, electric vehicles (EVs) are generally less likely to catch fire than traditional gasoline-powered cars. Since 2014, there have allegedly been 83 fatalities linked to Tesla fires, and reports indicate 218 fire incidents involving Tesla vehicles between 2013 and early 2024.

Not a knock on Tesla, but the Pinto fires are way overblown...

The link to autos yahoo refers to the autowire but those links are dead and I can't find the article searching the site. Was it retracted?

Sadly when I look at the Tesla site it looks like if I order a 60K version of the Cybertruck today I have to wait until 2027 for delivery. It appears that it is a sales disappointment and also out of stock

It’s not a sales disappointment, it generated a huge demand, thus the stretched out delivery timeline.

No Cybertrucks near me...

BUT, I looked at model 3 and saw some 'repaired' demos that were a whopping $120 less than a brand new one!!! Model Y had a slightly higher 'discount'...

If I went this way I would buy new!!

My guess is that the 60k Cybertruck is an attempt to soak up thousands of excess parts built assuming they were going to be popular. Once the excess parts are gone…?

Wanted to hear if anyone has had odd problems with EV's. I have a 6 year old Tesla which has been awesome to drive and I really enjoy it. Best car I've owned.

However, with that said, just had a bizarre issue. I was driving from NY to FL and stopped to recharge in SC. As soon as I plugged my Tesla into their supercharger, the pins on my charge port broke off and I couldn't charge the car while being down to 5% battery left. I had to get a 60 mile tow to the nearest Tesla Service Center who were able to fix quickly. I also found out that my AAA had a mileage restriction and they also don't view Tesla as one of their authorized service centers. Nobody else locally could fix the charge port broken port issue.

Anyone else encounter strange issues with EV's?

Sounds to me like AAA is as bad (or worse) than they were decades ago when I had them. Restrictions and excuses for everything.

On a recent 2 day road trip in our 4 year old Model Y to Colorado, we stopped to charge in Mesquite, NV with about 5 percent left. We plugged into one which wasn't working, then tried another -still nothing. Another person told us there were a regional power outage! Fortunately this supercharger was outside of a casino, which was open on generators. We were able to go in and use restrooms, and sat at the bar and had a beer while we waited an hour and a half for power to return. We did try calling AAA and we're also stuck with the mileage restriction, so opted to wait. I think they have a premium plan with a much higher mileage range, so we may think about that.

We agree it's the best car we've ever owned, this glitch included. Dog mode is the best thing since sliced bread and we never not have an EV ever again.

Agree that Tesla is the best car I’ve ever owned, these ISOLATED freak incidents aside. We also have a Polestar 3 EV which has had so many mechanical issues and is so quirky as to its technology that we would never get another Non- Tesla EV (politics aside).

Interesting... I have the other kind of charging port.. not sure if there are pins...

But, did a part come lose or did the pins actually break?

This seems to me that if they broke off that they could have been stuck in the cable to the car...

Since most all cars in the US are going to the Tesla charge port this might become important...

My comment was about vehicles in general.....not ICE vs. EV.
Haven't there been enough ICE vs EV discussions in the past that you need continue to beat the dead horse?

Nothing like that! Wow. I don’t even know what those charge port pins are. Oh, you mean the pins inside the connector.

Pick a vehicle. Any vehicle. Any power source. Then read their forum. There's always common stuff and really odd stuff that gets discussed.

Same can be said for appliances. It is just what happens with electric and mechanical contrivances.
