Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Up in Prescott AZ at the moment charging the little ol Bolt EUV. This badboy Dodge Charger was charging up. So cool 😎 looking. It even gave a narly V8 growl when he started it up and drove off. I like it.

Cool car. Here's mine. I like it a lot.

Tell us how much fun that badboy must be to drive?
It hauls a$$!!!!
And I think it looks good doing it.
The ride is very nice, adaptive shocks. It handles better than expected, controls its mass well.
I was always a sucker for a big coupe.

Our first adventure into the EV lifestyle was a used BMW I3. Even with those skinny bicycle tires it was a lot of fun to drive. It was pretty quick off the line. Not Tesla quick but it surprised more than a few cars off the line. One time we had a dear older diehard V8 fan neighbor in it with us. There was this super sharp Corvette next to us and I teased him just a little and we were off...... With nothing but a little whine from our EV you could hear that Corvette roaring to life next to us.......until all that horsepower kicked in we were slightly ahead of him. Nothing over the top dangerous here as there were no other cars around and it was just a few seconds of fun.

And does it sound like a V8 inside?

I usually have the car in stealth mode, so it's quiet. If you turn the sound on and start the car, it kind of sounds like the Batmobile from the '60s TV show. I think that's because part of the sound is a tweaked recording from the Chrysler turbine car.
The sound level inside and outside changes depending on the drive mode you select. From lowest sound to loudest, Auto, Sport, Track, and Drag mode. There's also a custom mode and a rain/snow mode.
Drag mode is really, really loud.
One thing that is missing is changing the engine sound to mimic transmission shifts. It just does one long pull as you accelerate, since the gear box only has one ratio.
It is ridiculous fun.

Yeah I think with a car like yours sound effects would be cool.
No need for farts sounds like a Tesla. What's that all about?

My Bolt EUV should have Ice cream mode with Ice cream truck jingle playing... LOL.

What I would need is a convertible version of it!

While agree with you both this car screams V8....not sure many would want it without the sound to go along with the look. Vroom
Well it’s pretty ironic that they built an EV version of the Dodge Charger but maybe they were inspired by the amazing road performance of EVs.
Sound: "Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust" generates up to 126 dB of sound to mimic a Hellcat engine.

I created this forum to discuss various EV models. Please keep the discussion to discussion of a particular EV model or EV news about new/changed models.

There's another EV forum thread called "The Electric Vehicle Thread" if you want to discuss other EV related topics like the pros and cons of EV's, etc.

[MOD NOTE] The other thread has been closed for new comments, so please us this one instead.
I can tell you I love my 2020 Tesla Model Y with Full Self Drive (FSD) , but also very frustrated with Tesla on this. Back in 2020 when we bought the car, they promised software upgrades on the Full Self Drive and would get to autonomous driving. However, they now have newer models with a different version of hardware (HW4 vs my older HW3) and are stating they can't put all the functionality of the FSD in my car due to the memory needs of AI. They also are not providing an upgrade path although Musk vagulely promises its coming. Anyone else with an older FSD Tesla feeling left out? I hear there is a class action suit but the law firm is only doing it in CA for CA residents.

I'm curious. My HW3 MS pretty much drives itself although being called Supervised. What are you expecting with autonomous FSD? Will you use your vehicle as a means of income through drive share? Do you figure you will sit in the back and work or sleep?

I just drove a ~200 mile trip, largely interstate but partially city and of course stops, barely touching the wheel. I guess to answer your question, that works just fine for me and I am not feeling "left out".

Very cool. I won't lie, there have been a couple times I've seen a Charger parked in a stall and my immediate thought was "That a-hole is ICE'ing." I talked to one of the owners recently at an Ionna station, and he said it was like driving a rocket ship.

That is fast (3.3s). My Model S is 3.1s, Plaid version is 1.99s. Insane.

The latest V14 release has a significant change to the neural network model that is preparing the way to allow shrinking it down to a version that can run on HW3 cars. Of course one can still say promises promises.

In my case it was worth the $16,000 to trade my 2 year old HW3 Model Y for a 2026 HW4 model Y.

i remember mentioning to my colleagues that EV's would eventually have recorded engine noises - they laughed
An increasing number of ICE vehicles have fake engine sounds too. Check this out.

I remember many years ago reading a sci-fi book and one of the characters had an EV driving across country. The govt. had mandated all EV's had to have a noise for safety. He had chosen whale songs. Weird.

I use the goat yell as my walkaway lock sound on my Model 3, so that book wasn't far off.

Well not really because I never bought into the full automation promise so I never bought FSD. And I think they are still working on an upgrade path for HW3 owners. I only started renting FSD once version 12 became available and currently it does an excellent job.
