Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Those two are the leading contenders. Lucid is too expensive (and heavier too). Porsche Taycan is way too expensive; lousy value-for-money. The Hyundai N-something is a plausible alternative, but I can't stomach the styling or the gimmicks... plus it's an SUV, and heavier too. BMW has some competent offerings, but once again, the trio of complexity, cost and weight. It's really really hard to beat the Model-3 Performance (value) and Model S Plaid (raw power). I particularly like the styling of the Model S... but am a bit dissuaded by the weight and the rear wheel camber issue (reputedly eats tires). Otherwise I'd be all over a gently-used Plaid for $70K.
IDK if used is a consideration but there's a 2020 Porsche Taycan Turbo with 52 k miles for sale in Virginia.

That's even a little heavier than a Tesla Model S Plaid, and the OP didn't want that because of weight.

The OP is out of luck with EV weights, compared to a Camry or especially a Miata. Not going to happen...because physics!

Yes, that's the big detriment. I am absolutely agnostic about ICE vs. EV, national origin, brand, new vs. used, features and so on. No prejudices or even strong preferences. The only requirements are that (1) it's a car (not a truck or truck-like vehicle), since the only thing to be transported is me - no passengers and no cargo. And (2) it's peppy and nimble.

If manufacturers were willing to sacrifice range and build a proper 2-seater, I'd be all over it, even if it were costly (within reason). Maybe a 40 KWh battery, dual-motor RWD. Yes, an electric Miata is a pipe dream, but I even considered paying a shop to retrofit a Tesla rear motor/axle into a Miata. The cost would be ridiculous - well into 6 figures - so I demurred.

I will likely end up with a used Model-3 Performance, as it's reasonable compromise of cost and performance.

Yesterday, DW took her Honda Accord Hybrid in to have her fuel pump replaced, free as part of a recall. Of course when they came to her after, they recommended:
  • 4 wheel alignment $152 (outright BS)
  • Brake fluid service $219 (I had it done 18K miles ago, not needed for at least another 27K miles)
  • Fuel decarb service $208 (more BS)
  • Automatic trans replacement $160 (manual says not required for another 39K miles)
Of course I asked her to decline. I do all the service recommended in the manufacturers maintenance schedule, most dealers make up "recommendations" and then point to severe duty maintenance schedules if you ask. Our cars are very light duty...

Funny thing is, her car is due for a coolant change, they didn't recommend that.

I sure don't miss that dealer BS. It will be interesting to see what DW buys next time she's ready to replace the Honda.
Make sure they grease the muffler bearings and change the blinker fluid. ;)

Jaguar Finally Reveals Its All-Electric Type 00 After a Contentious Rebrand.

I test drove the Model Y last week. Unfortunately, but not too surprisingly from what I had read, the ride quality (every bump was quite pronounced) won’t work for us given my wife’s migraines. I’ll likely delay getting an EV until next fall - the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Genesis Electrified GV 70, and perhaps other models will have NACS ports by then and maybe Tesla will finally have released an updated Model Y with better ride quality.

Sounds like you test drove a performance model. The ride is no nearly so tight on the long range.

The non-performance Y's presumably have a softer ride with the standard 19 inch wheels vs the optional 20 inch. There was a change to a softer suspension in 2023 I think. I'm not sure if they'll soften it further. I wonder if the Cadillac Lyric would work.

I have air suspension in my Model X, so it’s a fairly cushy ride.

But I test drove a Model Y, and later rented a Model Y for a week and didn’t experience a bumpy ride in either even though not as smooth as my X.

I’ll reach out to the Tesla contact to see what they say about which version of the Model Y I drove.

All the pundits say the Model Y update (Juniper) will happen in 2025, there have been test cars out in the wild for over a month. It will most likely have a better ride based on the improved ride quality of the recent Model 3 update (Highland). But Tesla isn’t going for a cushy ride, they’re designed to balance comfort and performance - so they will always have some sporty feel. If you want a sense of what the new Model Y will ride like, just to test drive a new Model 3 (but not the Performance model).

EV batteries may last much longer than expected: Study

The shelf-life of electric vehicle (EV) batteries may be as much as 40 percent greater than previously assumed, a new study has found.

Stanford University scientists uncovered this possibility by changing the way they evaluate the life cycles of such batteries: Instead of conducting customary tests that involve a constant rate of discharge followed by recharge, they assessed the batteries under everyday, stop-and-go conditions.
I looked closely but saw no mention of the Energizer Bunny in the article. 🐇

A lot of us have to compromise since we have to select from what exists rather than what can be imagined. I mention the Taycan Turbo since they are selling for 1/3 of the cost new. They may not be a steal now but they are $100,000 less than new. OTOH there is the Porsche operating cost issue. I was hoping that Tesla would actually make the rumored model 2 and have a performance version. Ideally a coupe.

Peppy performance is relative. I don't think ICE can come close if you also want nimble.

I watched a video on converting an old Lexus from air suspension to conventional. I'm hesitant to have so much added complexity.

Right. We basically waited till we felt like the car that met our needs was available, and the charging network we needed was available, and then we ordered the car.

A nimble peppy car - hard to beat an EV. No lag in response to controls! No gear shifting!

Well I have been surprised lately... a couple of days ago I saw 3 Cybertrucks.... and that was only a 10 minute ride...

Today I saw the ass end at a light... I think that is the really ugly view... not that I like any of the views of them...

I'm starting to see a few more too, still very infrequent. Saw my first one at night. Woah.

I think what I don't like about it is that it looks like a warfare vehicle, perhaps reminiscent of a stealth ship. Another that comes to mind is the vehicle in the dystopian movie "Judge Dredd." So, it tickles the parts of my brain that are reserved for dystopian wars.

^^^ I’ve seen a couple dozen by now as well. I’ve grown to like the look of the Cybertruck, and the tech is incredible. All other pickups are indistinguishable from one another by looks, if that’s what you like.

Everyone's posting they saw a Cybertruck? My cousin took delivery of his back in March and I got to drive it. Really nice. Back is kind of ugly, but the front looks mean in a good way.
