Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Unless something has changed, non Teslas will have access to many but not all Tesla superchargers. And there was reportedly premium rates (30%?) for non Teslas - as it should be since all the funds to build the network have come exclusively from Tesla owners until now.
Correct, we only have access to the later models of tesla chargers. Also don't have access to some chargers that are compatible but deemed too busy to allow open access to other manufacturers. Our rates are set by which method we choose to charge. Plug and charge rates are a little higher than using the tesla app and picking a charger first.
Nearest chargers to me goes for .26 kWh - .47kWh depending on the time of day. Since my at home rates are .09kWh I have yet to use the tesla chargers.

I have to agree. 13.2.2 is FAR better than the 12.X variant I had for 3 months in early 2024. I have 13.2.2 for another couple weeks before my free trial expires. DW HATED riding with me using 12.X and wanted it turned off, she tolerates 13.2.2.
12.x.x seemed like riding with a 15 1/2 year old who was a slow learner. There is one intersection on the way to our subdivision with two "regular" lanes and a left turn lane. The curb lane ends 150 yards past the intersection so most of us choose the other lane. 12.x.x never figured it out but 13.2.2 did. I also go through an intersection with a left turn to get on the freeway. The official left turn area has about 5 spots so common practice is to pull in early even if you are technically driving on the left turn spots for the opposite direction.13.2.2 knows what to do.

I am not sure what the car would have done when it was in the wrong lane to turn. There was room to turn but not legally. Going straight took me into the park and ride where I could do a quick U turn. I guess that's why it is FSD (Supervised)

It's interesting to hear stories from the old days of EVs. Now there are superchargers all over and the car knows where to go.

Out of spec did a long series of Youutube videos about their coast to coast I 90 race. The Electrify American chargers were sometimes very fast but regularly broken. I listened while doing things around the house. The Teslas seemed to be the most practical but some of the others like the Taycan seemed more interesting.

Major boo-boo on the windshield driving on the interstate back from SPI after Xmas. Cars in front of me were way ahead and the road seemed clean. I was looking straight ahead at the cars ahead of me and it hit above my field of view, so I didn’t see it happen. Whatever it was seemed to just fall from the sky, or maybe it somehow flew over from the other side of the interstate. Just a loud thunk and a big bullseye crack. The inside layer of glass was not penetrated. Seems like it could have been way worse. Anyway, will be getting a new windshield.

Ouch.

Maybe time for the new model Y. I see that it is up for sale in China tonight.

My nephews (14, 11 and 6) were really wowed by our Tesla. They plus parents live in Amsterdam and visited over the Xmas holidays. They had ridden in a model X before as a taxi/uber in Amsterdam but they still were wowed. The biggest hit was the Tesla light shows. We spent Xmas at a hotel on the beach on South Padre Island, so Xmas Eve I parked the car out it an open area of the parking lot and had it run 2 or 3 of the shows. They loved it and were all dancing with the music. Six-year old requested an encore the next night so we ran some we hadn’t done. They are all quite creative with cool music. With a Model X a big part of the show is opening the rear falcon wing doors and then flapping them like flying. That sure was fun!

Tesla opening up superchargers to everyone is a big plus, and I think overall charging situation is so much better now with lots of options.
The only Tesla Supercharger within 10 miles of my home is always full or nearly full with nothing but Tesla automobiles. Opening it up to other brands? I wonder how the Tesla owners will feel about that since currently the 12 chargers can barely keep up with the demand from Tesla owners. Time will tell.

Again. They’re not opening up all Tesla chargers to non-Teslas. If the Tesla utilization at the location you’re talking about is really that high, it probably won’t be opened up to others.

So the actual Model Y refresh (Juniper) just officially dropped in China. Not sure when we’ll see it in the US but rumors are we’ll see it sooner than the Model 3 refresh China>USA lag.

As expected all the same changes as the Model 3 Highland - with two notable exceptions.
  • The new China Model Y still has a turn signal stalk and no turn signal buttons on the steering wheel. So they eliminated the (right) gear shift stalk, and kept the turn signal stalk. That will make a lot of potential buyers happy!
  • The pictures show a front bumper camera!
Plus light bars front and back as rumored.

China is getting a different blue option than we’ve seen here.

You can opt for translation https://www.tesla.cn/modely/design#overview

I doubt I’ll trade my Model Y in for a Juniper, but if I do it won’t be until AI5.

but it's the non-EV owners who have all the news about charging problems :)

That is good news for the local Tesla owners.

That does sound like a lot of fun! Did you take a video? If so, would love to see it!. My Blazer EV sure can't do that fun stuff

Just look online, dozens of them.

When rocks fall off a fast vehicle, they get huge spin energy imparted to them. They bounce up and down, sometimes 20 ft into the air if the spin hits the rock right on a bounce. This goes on for a few seconds with multiple bounces, and you can be unlucky enough to drive right under it and into it, so it comes out of nowhere.

audreyh1: I have a question. Do you have get this replaced at Tesla, or will an after-market do it?

One concern I have with Tesla is serviceability. The stories about wait times come and go, and I don't know what is truth. It seems like a windshield is something that can be done at your home so perhaps this will go smoothly.

I have an appointment at Tesla service. Would have gotten it replaced last week but with wet and cold weather and an hour drive I rescheduled. Tesla didn’t make a mobile service appointment which they did for my last service. It’s a huge windshield going all the way past our heads.

Really sorry to hear about this, hope all goes well.

It’s definitely the worst windshield boo boo we’ve experienced, but those are the breaks. Things like this happen. I’m not expecting problems as this is a routine operation by an experienced team (knocking on wood of course!).

IDK if there should be a separate auto industry and EV thread but there is already a lot of that content on this thread so forgive me.

I was surprised to see that the Ioniq 5 is being built in Savannah. Of course Chevrolet makes the Blazer and Equinox EVs in Mexico where the Ford MachE is made. If a Chinese manufacturer decided to build cars in Mexico for export to the US could they be stopped without harming GM and Ford?

We've had "issues of contention" in the past and threads have been closed. Despite the occasional short-lived glitch on this thread, it overall has gone much better, with the idea we talk about models to avoid confrontations on the big issues.

Other topics have snuck in, but it usually doesn't end well. I don't know where your request will go for expanding the discussion, but I kindly suggest to everyone that they keep their cool about this.

So 180 miles today mostly using FSD 13.2.2 It worked well for the most part. I was limited to 70 mph at one point after some warning about weather conditions but the car seemed to see the lanes despite snow. Eventually one of the camera's got dirty and it made me drive. Chill mode seems to give good following distances but I have to nudge it to pass rather than follow on the freeway sometimes. I like not having to hold the wheel. It seems to know where you are looking even with sun glasses. I got 300 wh/mile which is higher than usual but the cold temps probably contributed. I am liking the FSD more. Apparently future versions in testing are much better.

It’s fun being on this wave of experiencing self driving. I hope you keep enjoying it. I haven’t tried my new 12.6 yet.

How does FSD handle it when someone cuts you off or if extreme braking is needed to avoid an accident?

While I find FSD V13.2.2 easily the most natural and best overall, it has made some peculiar mistakes that earlier versions never did for me. Sitting at a light that turned green and the car didn’t move until I goosed it. There’s a shortcut leaving my home FSD has always taken, it seems 13.2.2 doesn’t know about the shortcut. Last night it took the wrong turn lane going home (would have put me in a convenience store parking lot), no earlier version has gotten that wrong. Not that earlier versions didn't make more minor mistakes. And again, FSD has never made an unsafe choice IME.
