Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

My point was the Model Y Juniper has the cabin radar, not earlier MY’s or M3’s. Your post said “I didn't know that Tesla's have internal radar. Apparently the new 4D version in the Model Y will detect passenger size to manage air bags but is also capable of detecting a child in the car alone.” IIRC the Model S/X have had it swings their refreshes a few years ago.

They have a radar for the inside of the vehicle but not for the self-driving system?

I think someone may have already posted this video, the self-driving features of a Chinese EV, including self-parking.

They go on an hour drive and it merges in and out of traffic very well, parks itself.

The YouTuber is a fan of Tesla FSD but he's really impressed by what he experiences in the video.

This system has 3 lidars and the car costs about $30k.

We have FSD 12.3.6 now. I finally tried standard mode as we had an hour’s drive each way on interstate to get the windshield replaced. I usually use chill, but on long stretches of interstate it tends to move into the right lane so encounters merging traffic and more slow traffic. So I pressed the thumb wheel to the right to switch to standard mode instead - that in itself is very cool. In standard mode the car generally stayed in the center lane unless it encountered slower traffic in which case it moved to the left lane to pass. I was impressed, a couple of times passing a long line of trucks and cars until we finally passed the lead vehicle slowing everyone down and returned to the center lane. Heavy evening heavy traffic FSD does very well. Also with tight merges on exits, I don’t know how it managed that last squeeze, but it did!

My point is that some ModelYs have had it for a couple of years

Thanks, that’s news to me. It appears the Juniper has a more capable cabin radar, I did not realize earlier MYs had some radar, thought they relied on interior camera alone.
While Tesla has included an in-cabin radar since 2022, this appears to be a new, more capable radar. The current cabin radar is used to verify seat occupancy, but Tesla plans to add more functionality to this new system.

This updated radar will be used to provide a lot more detail than the current radar or cabin camera can provide today. The radar is located in the same location as the current version, directly above the rearview mirror.

Very good discussion of all the non-obvious improvements in the new model Y.
That was a really good preview, even though long.

I do like the new look, and appreciated the discussion of the improved airflow elements. Leno adds so much to the discussion because he has so much car history in his brain. So his questions are very thoughtful.

I initially couldn’t get my head around the light bar, but now I see that is the running lights and the actual headlights are below. The rear end lighting is also very nice.

Boy, our X sure could use that button to automatically lay down the back seats!! Sweet.

DH thought the turn signal buttons would also be on the wheel, but not in this Y. So looks like I might be forced back to a turn signal stalk. I’ll also have to pay up if I want another yoke. I tried the wheel in an X at the service center recently, and it seriously blocks parts of the instrument display which I hate. The yoke doesn’t block the instrument display at all. That instrument display is one of the things I like most about the X (S also has it) and it means you rarely look at the center console while driving because all the critical information is right in front of you.

It is nice that they redesigned the rear hatch to try to reduce the cost of collision repairs.

Just got back from a long road trip in our 2024 Tesla Model S.... From Pennsylvania to Florida for a cruise, then to Disney and then back home. Paid for a month of the self driving autopilot (FSD). The FSD has improved so much over earlier versions - it navigated through Baltimore, DC and Orlando traffic patterns without a hitch and made picking charge spots very easy. We charged about every 3 hours of driving and it usually was done before we had finished eating and hitting the bathrooms.

We parked it for 8 days at the cruise port - only lost 1% charge.

The only times I had to disengage the autopilot was for unique contruction - like a new island exit of a grocery store... The car made driving in traffic mazes like Orlando pretty simple.

I assume you didn’t have sentry mode on when it was parked at the cruise port.

But yeah with sentry mode off I see only 1 to 2% charge loss over a week. 7-8% over 6 weeks.

I did have sentry mode and climate control both off at the cruise port. I also kept myself from checking up on the car with the app. I expected more of a loss, but parked with 77% battery and came back 8 days later to 76%

Did you have any issues with charging while eating? I've heard that some charging stations penalize you if your car is finished charging but not removed fairly quickly. I could see that if charging spaces were scarce, but not if several charing stations are open. I was thinking the car alerts you (by phone) when charging is complete. I just wondered how that all w*rks.

Just trying to understand the details of charging. Thanks so much for sharing your favorable experiences.

It’s probably unlikely you’ll get charged after 5 mins if the charger is not busy, but anyway all you have to do is unplug the car ha ha.

We haven’t run into this situation because we don’t eat in restaurants during the day portion of a long road trip drive. Breakfast, dinner yes, lunch no.

You can track the charging on your phone and yes it does message you if you are finished. Some places had a sign for x minutes of grace… really its pretty easy to manage

Good to know.

Apparently the Robotaxi will have polyurethane body panels with the paint being injected during the molding process. This is supposed to reduce costs substantially. Painting slows production and costs money.

Yep. They talked about that when they first introduced the concept of unboxed construction last year. Evidently the Cybercab may be the first actual production application.

A couple of observations....

Was going to pick up some BBQ and saw a Tesla dealership next to it... I was really surprised at how many cars were on the lot since I read they are hard to get... There had to be 20 to 30 Cybertrucks in a long row...

The other thing is that most people do not seem to like the metal look of the Cybertruck... over half (maybe 3/4th) of the ones that I see have a wrap... I have no problem with this but it seems that people do not have the same vision as Tesla...

Any chance you can check again I a few days to see if they were picked up? Seems they must have been purchased unless they are wrapping them on spec.
