ER in Mexico??

I have a relative who receives a modest RR annuity. On his list of options is to move to an ExPat community in Mexico, sign up for their health insurance and, perhaps, purchase additional health insurnace with a high deductable in case he needs care in the US.

I told him to rent for a year or two before purchasing a home to make sure that he is happy with the decision.

How do you get affordable rentals? Everywhere I look on the web they are $1000 - 2000pm. The only place I see cheaper is when someone writes an article about living in Mexico, claims rentals to be $300-500 but NEVER tell you where to look to find them. Maybe it is all a ploy to sell books

To get specific to what ShokWaveRider said, this URL indicates that realism is needed. Cheap living can be done, if you're willing to live like the Mexicans.

Thanks for all the great info. However, my basic question still remains unanswered, where can I find a list of rental properties that are NOT VACATION RENTALS? Say apartments, houses & codos up to $1000 per month, furnished would be nice as an option. For various locations in Mexico, without actually visiting them. I.e an apartments.com for Mexico. I am sure I could visit like anyone and eventually find some place, but I would like to research before we go.

Got to go there to find the local deals. If you are conducting an internet search in english, you won't find anything but expensive vacation rentals. Btw, who wants to rent a place in Mexico being in the US without having seen the place? Local rentals are only found locally. I found this is valid for all the Latin American countries I have been to.

Found the same thing throughout my searches -- the english sites are all aimed at tourists or those maybe looking for an investment opportunity. Extremely limited -- just whatever local real estate guy happened to be interested in the web.

I think it's time to book an airplane ticket or take a ride. Isn't that what ER is all about? Web is great, but sitting in front of it for everything won't work.

The People's Guide site is the same folks who wrote a terrific book about Mexico that had a big influence on me years ago. (People's Guide to Mexico) I nearly dropped out of college to get a VW Bus, leave Berkeley and just go live life. They did a great job articulating how travelling/living down there is a state of mind, it's about getting out of your shell, rolling with the punches and all that ex-hippy stuff. "Wherever you go, there you are!".

Anyway, Brat -- hope you have a great trip! Figure out what is the modern equivalent of a VW Bus (maybe a dodge minivan?) and head south. You'll find a great rental, great community, and maybe send us some posts from the local Internet cafe.
