Falling down at an old age - lost a friend recently

LOL!! no, Medicare wants you out the same day for knee or hip replacements. I was scheduled for OR at 6:00 am and in recovery by 9 or so. I had lunch, walked the halls and then went home at 2:00 PM.
I am amazed. In '03 DW had double knee replacement. They made her walk a couple of steps that first day but she was totally out of it until the next day. We had insisted that they let her stay in the hospital for several days for rehab. Good thing we did as it was three times per day instead of twice. It also kept me from spending all my time getting her to and from the rehab (up and down steps at our place.)

Yes, Medicare doesn't want you taking up a hospital bed but I didn't know they would kick you out so soon. Remarkable.

When DW had her TKR last May as outpatient, she was walking around the house by the end of surgery day without the walker that they sent home with us. She started therapy 3 times a week at Athletico 5 days after TKR. DW's insurance was willing to pay for 24 therapy sessions. Normally Athletico has 36 sessions for TKR patients. Athletico contacted DW's insurance saying that she needed 36 sessions and the insurance covered it. But DW was walking fine and had full range of motion long before 24 sessions. She just wanted to keep going as it turned into a 3 times a week social event.

The Doc can recommend a stay in the hospital, but it generally is about your ability to recoup at home. I had no issues doing that since I was in good physical condition at the time.

Yes, as the doc pointed out after DW had double TKR she STILL had severe OA which would not go away. She was most definitely out of shape due to the OA affecting virtually all her joints (on a rotating basis - knees one day, ankles the next, elbows later in the week.).

I had one hip replaced last August and the other in December. Doc does mostly out patient, but I elected for hospital overnight... good thing: first hip spinal anesthesia - got to room, stood up and passed out...stayed 2 nights and all ended well. Second hip general anesthesia.. one night. Now I walk like a teenager (well...not exactly)

I'm still amazed that you can walk out of the hospital the next day. How far we have come!!
