I have been a long time reader of The Economist Magazine, a subscription since 1979, also had times where I read the Financial Times and WSJ & have a sub to NYT. But the individual writer I follow these days is Matt Levine who writes for Bloomberg. I do not have a subscription but receive emails every day and I just look forward to reading them.

At 75 I have slacked off my interest in financial publications but his writing is just so good. Interesting aside, he also has a weekly podcast and the few I listened to I did not like at all, maybe speaking is a different skillset than writing.

So aside from various publications, who is your favorite financial writer?

I guess I don't have a favorite financial writer, but I did enjoy the Planet Money podcast/segment from NPR when it started during the GFC ~2008. I haven't listened in over a decade now. I especially enjoy the Freakonomics approach that examines near universal beliefs/assumptions that aren't necessarily true, or much more nuanced.

Howard Marks.
I make sure to read everything he puts out on his thoughts and opinion on the markets.

Christine Benz. Writes for Morningstar on retirement and personal investing. It's free if you create an account. She posts something almost daily.

I also like Matt Levine and agree with you on both the writing and podcast.

Levine was on the Odd Lots podcast when they interviewed Sam Bankman-Freid 4/25/22 and SBF pretty much admitted that FTX was pretty much a Ponzi scheme. If you haven’t heard it, ite a great interview.

I have never regularly been a reader of any financial columnists or other financial writers, and I have never listened to financial radio shows or podcasts. How did you separate the wheat from the chaff and find one that you were certain was not leading you astray?

Like the OP, @yakers, I have subscribed to The Economist for many years, but until relatively recently, when retirement and my portfolio became of greater interest to me, I didn't make an effort to read the Buttonwood column on finance and markets, as I felt it was often over my head.

Not sure I really have any. Used to like Scott Burns. Still like James Glassman. Used to like Shad Rowe!and Ken Fisher when they were in Forbes. Only Fisher and Glassman still living.

I need some.

Most financial publications are no longer. I do follow podcasts such as the Wise Investor Group at Raymond James, Barron's Streetwise and some substacks.
