Favorite Song Openings

I was at work, probably post 2000, when this opener came up on some audio medium we were tuned into at the time. My deskmate looked at me, smiled, and we both said, "Donovan."

One of the top three song lyrics I've ever, heard, by the way. "Down through all eternity, the crying of humanity."

Baba O'Riley by The Who.

The phrase "Let's get together, before we get much older" represents a call to act on youth and ambition, urging immediate connection and rebellion against a "teenage wasteland".

Yeah, but I'm old now, so now what?

How about Toto's very first song on their first album? Child's Anthem actually feels like a great opening to their second song I'll Supply the love which standing alone has a great opening too.

It takes 1:50 before there's any hint of what the song is, then another :30 for the hint, then the body of the song.

And also

Reelin’ In the Years- Steeley Dan.

Just heard it on the radio yesterday and brought a smile to my face immediately!
We don’t have to put the You Tube link here with it do we? Everyone knows that one!

It was already mentioned. Youtube links aren't a requirement.

I'd go for the Who, but something a little more in their prime.
I used The Real Me since the topic was openings, and the opening bass by The Ox/ Thunderfingers is still considered a classic. Amazing that Entwistle (rip) did the whole bass in one take and shows why he is still considered one of the best bass players.

We've been watching "China Beach" and the opening song is Reflections by Diana Ross. Sometimes I have to back up to hear it again. So relevant to the show and the late 60's.

The one lyric I remember from a Tragically Hip song is “no one is interested in something you didn’t do” from the song Wheat Kings.

Iconic opening of Close to the Edge by Yes... 3:50, albeit an acquired taste (rest of the song is iconic as well!) Wierd song but has moments of excellence. Rick Wakeman's ~ 1 minute keyboard instrumental beginning about 14:55 is legendary.

Big Yes fan here. Fantastic album. Many consider this album the epitome of Prog Rock. And You and I also a great song.

Many Steely Dan songs start out with an instantly recognizable hook - Josie, Do it Again, Peg, Black Cow, Hey Nineteen
Donald Fagen - I.G.Y.
Bee Gees - Stayin’ Alive
CCR - Up Around the Bend
Harry Nilsson - Everybody is talkin’
Blondie - Heart of Glass
MGMT - Electric Feel
