I miss the app. The new experience on iphone is meh. I keep landing on post #1 in a thread I have previously read.

Using the app on an iPhone, when I click a thread it takes me to where I left off.

I select the lightning icon and then new posts. Works great and much better than the old app

My only wish is the lightning icon would take me straight to new posts instead of what’s new.

At the top of the thread (not the top of the page) to the right of the page numbers, is a link "jump to new" and that will get you to the posts you haven't yet read.

I just noticed that I started a "reply" to a post and then decided not to post it. The reply is now sitting at the end of the thread, waiting to be posted, every time I go to the thread. Is there a way to delete an aborted reply?

Inside the aborted reply, there should be 3 vertical dots (hamburger menu) on the right side of the toolbar (I'm using a desktop browser). Clicking that gives more options, including a floppy disk icon. Click the floppy disk and choose 'delete draft'. The draft reply should not be present the next time you visit that thread. Note: If you just reload the page, the draft reply will still be there. You have to exit the thread.

I click in the text, press CTRL + A, and hit the backspace key.

The question is: Can we get a question or gate applied when people respond to old threads?

The old software did this and it helped avoid some baffling thread interactions. It just presented a question, it didn't prevent replying. This appears to be missing after the update.

Question: I wanted to "Start a Conversation" with a member. But upon attempting, there was no checkbox to do so. I tried to do it manually, and got a message saying "You can't start a conversation with <x>"

Does this mean this person has gone fishing? Or is there a way for this person to kill the ability to get messages?

Anyone can modify their own profile, and under the option “Privacy” choose not to let any member start a conversation with you, or only those you are following or nobody.

Even older thread! 2003!
I went to another forum that uses the same software and tried posting to an old thread. I got the warning message below, so the capability still exists on this forum like it did on the old software.

Old Thread: Hello MBSC. There have been no replies in this thread for 365 days.
Content in this thread may no longer be relevant.
Perhaps it would be better to start a new thread instead.

[checkbox] I know that this is an old thread, but I want to reply to it anyway.

Still adjusting to new format. I discovered a neat feature today. When you start a new thread the software scans the title and asks if the subject is already being discussed and lists some possible duplicates. I think many of us do a manual search as I did but I like the feature as a backup.

I am viewing the site using the Chrome browser on a desktop pc. I have an extension called Dark Mode that changes all the white on the screen to a dark gray and the black text is changed to white. Now this has worked for many months, maybe all year, I forget when I got the extension. When I hover over the title of each thread with the mouse, it shows the first several lines of the first post inside a box. Tonight, when I hover over the title of any thread all I get is the box but there is no text to see, it is all dark gray. When I turn off Dark Mode I can see the text but there's a ton of white on the screen. Any idea what changed? Using Dark Mode is easy on the eyes as all that white on the screen is too bright.

I am using the Chrome browser as well, and do not see the effect you are seeing. I'm certainly no computer expert, but perhaps you could clear your cookies/history and restart.

Dark Mode extension in use here. Since I use 3-4 browsers I get to see what works and doesn't when you change to improved reading.

The extension has to work across many sites, and there are problems occasionally. Usually you have to completely describe your system, application and extension to an actual developer to get something tweaked, if possible.

For my own problem with colors on this site, there were crickets. I eventually discovered that the specific issue of white text on a yellow button was worse on my phone. This is with the Brave Browser builtin dark mode. But on my PC the button is dark gold, and white letters are easier to read.

I once thought that the issues of color and contrast were extremely important, since our eyesight degrades over time.

But the fact that you and I are using an extension to help us read content probably means we are outliers.

I grabbed the first cup out of the machine, and went to my office to have a peek at the feature you mentioned.

On Brave Browser on my PC, I am using an extension called Dark Reader. Since Brave is a fork of Chrome, you should be able to find it.

With Dark Reader on for this site (yes, you can add exceptions and tweak settings by site) the text popout you refer to appears fine.

Let me know if it works for you. Turn off the other extension to try this new one.

I turned off Dark Mode and installed Dark Reader on Brave and Chrome. Also added the icon to the tool bar for both browsers. I can now mouse over the names of threads and the text is visible for several lines the way it used to be using Dark Mode. I guess something changed in Dark Mode and I lost that preview showing the text but Dark Reader is doing it. I'll use this at various sites doing different things and see how it works out, so far so good! Thanks!

I sent $10 to Dark Reader today. There are brightness and contrast sliders in the extension, which I'll try tomorrow

Have noticed that when I click on a link for a recent thread it automatically jumps to the latest post but on older threads I have to click jump to new button. Why does it do this? Any way to make it jump to new on older threads?
I find I start reading older threads and then after a while notice the date and have to click the jump to new button.

Yes but I did not make connection to old vs new. Seems to be random for me. Also jumps to bottom of page.

In the past day, we've been working to update the forum to a new software platform and we've been offline. Welcome back! The new forum software is called Xenforo and there are some new features and functions.

LOGIN CHANGE:
Your account can be accessed by logging in with your e-mail address or username (that displays on posts) plus the password for your account. If you are having trouble with this and can't get through the password reset process, you can click the contact link at the bottom of the page to reach out for help.

If you've set up a new account because you couldn't access your old one let us know. We can consolidate these and get you logged back into your old account.

There are many new features and I encourage you to wander around, test things out and then visit your profile and do some updating. Please keep in mind that changes and adjustments are still being made and so views will become more refined over the next few days.

Update your profile:
  • Consider uploading a new avatar (little pic next to your posts). The new site accommodates larger images and old avatars are looking a little tired. Avatars will automatically resize - choose a good one!
  • Update your signature if needed
  • Add a profile banner - larger image that displays on your profile page
Mobile viewing
The site runs well on small screens. Try it out on the road, and use your regular login - no app required. Set a bookmark for the site on mobile for fast access and look for push notifications (coming soon) to stay up to date.

Thread marking:
The forum remembers what you have already read and will display new unread threads as bolded or when you click into an ongoing thread, takes you to unread content BUT: You may need to Mark a forum "read" for this to work correctly moving forward. The conversion could not "remember" what you have already seen and so initially all threads may appear as unread. To do this, open a forum and look for the link at the top of the list of threads to "Mark Read". Alternatively, use the 'Mark Forums Read' link at the top of the page to mark all.

There are many things still being tweaked and fiddled with and you will continue to see some changes but we wanted to get back online as soon as possible - thanks in advance for your patience.

Still under construction:

I live overseas and have never had to use VPN to access the site. Are you talking browser or app?
