Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Don’t understand why I need to turn on VPN to pass the human test when I am overseas.
It depends on where you are overseaes. We have substantial trouble with spam from some parts of the world and so have set a login and registration challenge in place that may be affecting you. It's an imperfect system but on balance seems better than an endless parade of woody pill ads, and ads for deep discounts on knock off fashions and $34 iphones.

I don't really want to scroll through 17 pages of questions so will ask here: How do we get rid of the "dryer sheet" comment under our names? I don't use dryer sheets and am NOT an afficionado. Would rather have that space blank if I cannot add my own comment in.
Thanks for your help.

It's a post count threshold. Apparently there was some meme way back before the term meme probably existed about thrifty ways to reuse dryer sheets. I've been here since 2007 and it predates me. I think it's time that was retired. It's not very welcoming to new members as this post shows. The message count is already displayed so there's no need for a label, IMO.

Are there any plans to allow different background colors - just a dark gray w/ light text would be great. The current layout is so bright, it hurts my eyes.

I tilted my head when I read this as my screen is light text on dark. Then I remembered that I use the Dark Reader extension for this site and others.

I think it is a bit of whimsy and a historical connection. Let's face it, this can be a pretty serious place. I like the levity. It gives new users something to figure out. Heck, my first time here I had to look up "DW" and all kinds of other things I never saw before.

However, since time changes, I suggest the following to modernize this frugal theme:

New user: "Confused about TurboTax"
A few posts: "Hopes for Fidelity free TurboTax"
Moderate posts: "Quits Fidelity when they don't get free TurboTax"
Many posts: "Confidently is awarded free TurboTax at Fidelity"
Massive posts: "Dosn't care, pays full price for their own TurboTax"

:)

How about nothing? Or the option to leave that field blank?

Who cares, why is this something that is a problem? I ignore it.

As have I, for almost 19 years now.
It's lame and it can make newcomers feel like they are the butt of an inside joke. Since you two ignore it, you shouldn't have any issue if it goes away.

My eyes thank you for this. I just installed it on Firefox and it works great for this site.

I agree in fact I may not notice it has gone away for months!

Ditto on this request. I like dark mode because it allows me to read the forums when I’m up early without disturbing my spouse.

I think Xenforo has free dark themes as well as paid versions. Not sure what’s involved to enable them.

I did buy ($4.99) the dark reader extension on the advice of another poster here. Seems to work well for this site.

Paid for Dark Reader yesterday. Have been using it for a year or two and find it flexible.

With a particular device you may have a system level setting, and also an app one.

But I'm finding the Dark Reader extension a better approach for browsing. Some sites don't work well in dark mode, and this extension lets you exclude those.

Well, gosh. Obviously I care, that's who.
If it isn't a problem for you, why waste your time commenting?

I mostly use my iPhone here, so I programmed it to turn on 7-7 almost full warm color as it greatly blunts the brightness, quite useful

Another useful feature of the site is the ignore feature. Very handy for keeping the place friendly. Like my mom used to say, if you don't have anything nice to say, put the other guy on ignore. Well, she really didn't say that, but I bet she would if she was reading here.
