We are in the initial stages of preparing for a move next Spring so that means clean out time.
I have used FB Marketplace in the last few days to move stuff out the door. The secret? List it for free.
I got rid of old doors, an old TV, some stools. Things go to a good home, but best of all, I don’t have to haul anything away. Hopefully it leads to good karma.

That is an idea. I've been accumulating untold riches of good karma with my daily trips to Goodwill. I don't have to deal with strangers knocking at my door and wasting my time.

Some of the items are not transportable in our vehicles. Hence the bonus of no haul and get rid of.

Heavens no. We love it here. We had a unique opportunity on a lot/house just a few miles from our current house. It’s still under construction.
A slightly further move than you Audreyh1. lol

Check out the Freebie Alert app it automatically cross posts your listing to multiple sites like Marketplace, Next Door, offer up, and trash nothing. Broadens the reach.

You folks are more optimistic than us. We don't want to build a new custom house (tract home ok) because we believe that we may be dead before we get to see the completion. Custom homes can have ridiculous delays with stuff going wrong.

I got at least a dozen inquiries within minutes on FB. I had to put the listings as pending to stop all the messages.

We’ve built before we get it. The builder will give us a 90 day ish window prior to closing. It’s all good. What you get is a place you really want vs a tract home.

Our new home is not custom. Lots of selectable options but an already established floor plan with a few modifications available. This is our second home with this builder. They were tiny when they built our first home 15 years ago, they are much bigger now, and not nearly as flexible.

Cool!

We are building a new house just 1/10 of a mile down the street.
When I was 16, we moved from the old homestead (wait for it) 2 houses up the street! When I got married I moved (wait for it) 2 houses back down the street to the old homestead. We probably looked pathetic moving stuff by hand up and down the street. No way were we going to get professional help on the move(s).

Ir's amazing how many people PM almost instantly. I will say though that a lot of the time I suspect they're resellers. I'd rather the stuff go to someone that needs it but unfortunately it's impossible to screen them. I only give out my address to someone that can come right away then I stick the item outside the front door so I don't even need to talk to them.

We’ll probably have professionals move the big furniture. The other stuff - way move of it - we’ll move ourselves. So much work! But we’ll have plenty of time to do it.

I don’t have a problem meeting people. On FB, you see their profile so you have an idea of who will show up, plus FB now has a rating system like eBay.
If you manage it right, it’s pretty easy. Some over think this stuff.

I'm guessing you're a guy. Some of us are women, and what you consider "overthinking" is very often sensible caution in situations that call for meeting and/or interacting with strangers, especially at our homes.

I've been listing items as Free Stuff on Craigslist for years and my late husband used to joke that if we went to the weekend flea market at the old drive-in in town we'd probably see half our stuff. I did have one guy e-mail me a picture of the giant rug he'd hauled away- settled in his living room with his dog resting on it.

Like Calico, I'm female and live alone so I leave things at the end of my driveway or on my front porch.

I've given up on holding things aside for people- too many no-shows. I just say the first to arrive gets it and I'll delete the ad when it's gone. If it's a heavy item I also tell them I'm a lightweight and can't help them load it into their vehicle.

Finally- I discovered that when I carefully list the item in separate listings because they're in different categories, the first to arrive usually grabs them all- confirming the reseller hypothesis. I've since learned to add in small items that I haven't listed. They disappear, too!

That's a great thing Cocheese! You get rid of stuff with free labor and some good juju!

Building custom is not all that bad. Ours was about a year long process.

I only use FB because you see their profile and the message system allows to pause a listing quickly. I stopped using Craigslist years ago. Too many scammers there, but I have never had a problem with FB. Maybe location matters too.
We have resale shops that would take our stuff, but you only make a few dollars and that is definitely not worth the hassle.
I started the thread with big, hard to transport items in mind.

Of course at least 11 of that dozen were bots who will never reply when you answer them.
