Getting rid of WEP and GPO?

I got the verification letter for tax withholding (Form W4-V?). That was fast, will begin on May 2025 deposit.

I agree—reform makes more sense than a full repeal in most cases. A lot of these systems weren’t designed for how things work today, and small, thoughtful changes could fix a lot without causing unnecessary disruption. It’s good that it’s finally getting attention, though. Let’s hope it leads to something productive.

Add me to the list of people whose first deposit post-WEP was received. I had a few minor “huh?”s along the way but the discussion in this thread helped clear things up.

I also sent in the form to the local SSA office this week to begin deductions for Federal tax. I chose 22% to withhold.

I was curious about how they arrived at the monthly payment (it seemed too large after the 22% withholding).

It seems the reason is that 22% is withheld after deductions for Medicare B premium and IRMAA parts B & D. The withholding (for me) is actually ~15.5% of the gross SS benefit.

Just curious, have any retired public employees still not gotten their SS increase or retroactive deposit yet? I heard from my sister in-law today that she still hasn't seen anything. I told her I assumed they were still rolling it out to everyone and it was still coming. I just thought most people would have gotten it by the April check though.

My mom hasn’t received anything yet. We went to the social security office about a month ago and they confirmed that it was in process but that she would be in a later batch due to getting a paper check.
The problems with my mom’s case are her doing and not SSA.

Interesting, I guess my SIL will just have to wait it out or contact SS. Thanks.

As mentioned before, Mom (me) did her application on-line. We got a letter in the mail and went to the local office today to verify her identity. So everything should be in the works now. I think it is interesting that I did pension work my whole career and read this bulletin board and I still missed that Mom had this money coming. It took a letter from SSA for me to realize this. I'm happy she will get this as it is from her own employment, along with my Dad's railroad benefits.

Is your mom getting her Medicare through your dad’s ssn? That could be the reason and I would assume back pay is in process?
I hope that’s the case so they can stay in their current place.

As a matter of fact, her Medicare has been deducted from my dad's SS payments for I guess 25-30 years. Back pay would be nice!
Today my dad informed my brother and I that a deposit of almost $13K just landed in their checking account. This is life-changing money for them, a small nest-egg. Some peace of mind.

My first post-WEP deposit with 22% withholding showed up on Friday, May 16. Finally everything has settled into steady state (excepting any possible future COLA). Long time coming but worth the wait.

I have a friend who has a sister who could get SS if she just applied.... from talking to him it seems that she just does not do what she needs to do.. he went to see her this weekend and said he was going to bring it up again... I hope she finally applies..

This is great to hear. I am so happy for them-and you!
