Gift for granddaughter on 18th birthday?

It was Mikuni and it was 6pm. I was there at 6:02 and parked on the street a few steps from the front door. Unheard of on a Friday night. BTW, most folks think Mikuni doesn't take reservations. They do, but only through their app and only the day of. Fridays are crowded and we had 12 in our party, so the app really came through!
 
I think people who like different things than I do are difficult to buy for regardless of their gender.
It just makes the shopping harder when you are in unfamiliar territory.

best gift I ever gave a female, which was my dear wife, gorgeous diamond earrings
(maybe that's not your granddaughter) my wife almost always wears them
lastly if she has ANY financial literacy inclination, perhaps showing her on a Roth calculator what happens to just ONE initial deposit of 7500.00 that compounding at 8 %, when she retires at 55 and hopefully, she takes to the concept
she will have more options to enjoy when that time comes, and you covered the best of all worlds
 
I would ask her what would an 18 year old want for a BD gift. I ask that to my two granddaughter and that way I get it right every time.
 
I guess I'm a woman because I know that I'm very difficult to buy for. Seriously, meaningful gift giving is tough. Add to that people like me who generally go out and buy something as soon as I realize that I want it. Not to mention that I'm extremely picky. At this point in my life, I don't want something that's close to what I want, I want exactly what I want. I do try to convince family not to buy me gifts, but that takes some of the joy of giving away from them. My main goal is to get them to think in terms of consumables. They know what brand of golf balls I use and what type of foods I like (like nuts, teas. sweets . . .) but unfortunately, the list is pretty short. One daughter gets me a meat box from ButcherBox. That works pretty good. Still, new unique gift ideas are hard to come by and I hardly think that it's gender specific.

You may want to consider creating a "wish list" from Amazon or whatever sites, to help the people out when they are shopping for you.

What are the logistics of giving a Roth? Does he/she open it and you send the funds as a gift?

In a perfect world, I wish there was a way to open a gift brokerage account funded with a 500-equity fund that is locked up until age 60 or something like that. When I say locked up, I mean locked up, untouchable and with no way to get to the asset. If I could fund 19K (current gift limit) with SPY or 500-equity in perpetuity I would be all over something like that.

I did that and it was ignored by people who wanted me to gift them things on their wish list. I stopped doing so after awhile.

They are ways
As i understand it, you can't gift it has to be "earned income" which could be earned from parents or grandparents. Also, UTMA is an option, i have with my granddaughter and i have some control until she turns 26 hopefully by then she will see the power and benefit
I also wanted to" set things up" however after MUCH evaluating, i finally settled on trying to encourage them to learn about financial lit and involving them (years and years) into investing, over a long period hope they find fishing is fun and nice to eat lots of fish

Also, i am using seriously appreciated equities that i transfer into her UTMA and she then sells w up to 2600.00 a year at new cost basis with no tax consequence
she gets a dollar for as little as 10 cents out my pocket from my original investment

That sounds like a bridal registry. Does Amazon do that? Sounds way cool!

It was easy opening Roths for our kids. I think we had to get our Niece to "agree" to having a Roth that we would fund (she was an adult). Heh, heh, she had no problem with it. Now it's worth a Couple Hundred Grand (and she is just now retiring).
 
my grandparents got me some basic luggage. I used the heck out of it for the next 15 years. Finally replaced it almost 20 years later. I also recommend reading material. Some good philosophy never hurts. Tuesdays with Morrie or whatever suits her fancy. Time to level up.
 
Today is her birthday but since we're at our cabin we celebrated last week at the beach. DW took over the gift buying and we gave her 2 nice bracelets, one pearl and one gold. The jeweler recommended these and said they were popular with teens.
I like the Roth idea and may do that when she graduates from college in a few years.
Thanks for the suggestions. She loved the bracelets.

My DW bought 10 shares of SpaceX for our twin 10-year-old grandchildren for long-term investments!
For our two children we bought new cars for their graduation—18 is the right age (depending on the state) to start driving.
 
Going to college/tech school or entering the workforce? If the latter, although not sexy, you could offer to give her an amount equal to whatever she puts into a Roth for the next X years. She'll thank you later.

that's what got mine interested ,and started them considering more attention to the subject
 
Not a bad idea for when she finishes college and starts working to do a match (up to a certain $ amount) in a Roth to get her started. I'll also have to amend our trust to provide the same for our other grandkids, 12, 4, and 2. Might not be capable for the last 2 and don't want to leave them out.
 
Geez this isn’t that hard. Get her the same thing you got - hard sided samsonite suitcase- green. She’ll tell everyone about what you gave her for years to come.
 
Maybe she'll let us decorate her first house. Green shag carpet, avocado appliances. Burnt orange thrown in for effect.
