Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

It will be interesting to see what happens to the initial LIV golfers when their contracts start to expire at the end of this year. Rumors are that Koepka isn't happy with LIV and would like to rejoin the PGA Tour, I'm sure there are others. LIV golf annual revenue doesn't even come close to paying what they are given out in tournament prizes alone never mind some of the crazy bonuses they handed out. Saudi PIF has some deep pockets but you have to wonder how much more money they are willing to dump into a bad investment.

I got my LAB putter about 3 weeks ago. I have always been a terrible putter. For years and up until I got my LAB putter, a good round is 33 putts but most rounds are closer to 40 putts. With the LAB putter, my worst round was 35 putts, and normal is about 32 to 33 putts. Today I had 27 putts, 9 one-putts and 9 two-putts. I am a believer!

Played Carlton Woods (Fazio course) with my friends in The Woodlands yesterday. It was hot, humid and the greens were soft from all the rain.

I haven't played for several months due to a surgery recovery so it was nice getting back out. I actually played pretty well for being off that long.

I think LIV will die of a slow death. Or, it will be relegated to the league of "has-beens" and "ne'er do wells."
It already is mostly has-beens and no names albeit with maybe a few exceptions like Koepka, DeChambeau, C Smith, Rahm, Niemann.

Might not be such a good idea to live next to a golf course.
Researchers found that those living within a mile of golf courses have 126 percent higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease than those who live more than six miles away, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Good for you! Looks like the putter change was the thing you needed to improve the score.

I make about 32 putts per round. One year, I got it down to 30.5 putts/round. I.e., my putting is ok. But, based on this post and many YouTube videos reviewing various zero torque putters,
I tried the putters at a nearby golf shop. I liked them. They are more stable when I make short putts. But here's the thing. Both DW and I thought other less expensive putters were just as good, especially, if they fit our putting style. We agreed to keep our current putters for now.

Bryson is the most exciting guy in golf at the moment. He's exploded due to his YouTube channel. I enjoy watching him head to public courses and try to break the record. His last one he tied the low at -8. Not bad for never seeing the course. He makes it fun...and that's saying a lot considering it's golf.

Interesting article in the WSJ. The pro at Erin Hills (site of this year's LPGA Open) suggests you play the tees based on how far you hit your seven iron.

I'll try to gift the article, but if it doesn't work....if you hit your 7 iron 120 yards, play the gold tees. 140 yds, play the white tees, all the way to the black tees if you hit your 7 iron over 200 yards!

The pro says it has sped up play because 26% are playing shorter tees.

Edit to add: the pro said that using distance off the tee is another option, but people often overestimate their distance/accuracy off the tee. :)

I have a friend who won’t move up. To him that’s the ladies tee. Whatever. I like playing where I have a reasonable chance of getting on in regulation. For me, that’s typically the second tees from the front but I have no issues playing from the front tees if someone in the group wants to. I want it to be fun, not a beat down.

for half the people i play with their egos won't allow for this. for the other half they are too stingy and would feel like they are being gypped and not getting their money's worth by doing this. lol.

At our club for tournament play, men are only allowed to go to shorter tees if their ages qualify:
- BLACK, BLUE OR WHITE TEES - open to any player
- WHITE/GOLD TEES - Must be 60+ years of age
- GOLD TEES - Must be 65+ years of age
- GOLD/RED TEES - Must be 70+ years of age
- RED TEES - Must be 75+ years of age

Our problem had been that the single digit handicap who wanted to win so badly that they were going off from the red tee box. So putting in age restrictions has been a positive.

For women's private club tournaments, where we play against other clubs, we must play a minimum of 5,000 yards, and it is up to the individual club to pick the tee boxes that every team must use. We use the Gold/Red tee combo boxes when teams play at our club. There are some clubs where they have golfers who hit the balls really far, they pick the 5,600/5,800 yard tee boxes when teams play at their club to get a home team advantage. I rarely play "ladies/red" tee boxes anymore as it toughens me up to play in these tournaments.

+1. I like the Tee It Forward approach. There is a table that suggests the total yardage that you should play based on your average driving distance. Another thing that I like are courses that use numbers for tees rather than colors which makes it easier for those who insist that they play the white tees when they have no business playing the whites to drop down. The course behind our Florida condo had tees 1 through 6.

One course I play at has numbered tees (Carlton Woods - tees numbered 1 through 5, 5 being most forward). Another we play at once in a while has colored tees with black being the most forward (for seniors).

Since I switched my putter to DW's old putter, I have been putting the lights out. I was going to be fitted for a zero-torque putter and tried half a dozen at a PGA Superstore. They were all nice, better than my current putter. But before I plunk $500+ down on a new putter, I tried DW's 10-year-old Adam's putter. Honestly, it was as good as any zero-torque putters I tried. I am averaging one fewer putts per round.

Between my new XXIO Prime driver and LAB putter, my handicap has gone down by 2 strokes and heading down further. I played in an inter club tournament last week and shot 8 below my handicap. I have another tournament this morning and hope to continue to play well.

putters are a very personal, specific thing IMO. i can pickup any clubs and hit usually but putters are a different story. needs to feel right.
