Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

Interesting article in the WSJ. The pro at Erin Hills (site of this year's LPGA Open) suggests you play the tees based on how far you hit your seven iron.

I'll try to gift the article, but if it doesn't work....if you hit your 7 iron 120 yards, play the gold tees. 140 yds, play the white tees, all the way to the black tees if you hit your 7 iron over 200 yards!

The pro says it has sped up play because 26% are playing shorter tees.

Edit to add: the pro said that using distance off the tee is another option, but people often overestimate their distance/accuracy off the tee. :)
I'm happy to play the gold "senior" tees at the club I am a member of. From those tees I should always have a GIR opportunity. From the white tees it increases the odds of a GIP/GIB game for me (Green in Par/Green in Bogey :)).

The older friend I used to play regularly with (unfortunately his health has worsened and he hes yet to be able to play this year) once worked out a system, based on yardage, on which homes we could play the white tees and not slow things up. Also, if I am by myself and the course is not busy (not golfer closer than a hole and a half behind me) I will play the white tees to get more course practice with various clubs.

Probably about once every week or 2 I end up behind a group that clearly should be playing a tee forward. Most of the time they let me (or if I am in a twosome) play through. But I avoid playing on a weekend, it seems there are a lot more golfers playing from the wrong tees then, as opposed to during the week :).

Instead of talking tees, let’s talk yardage. For this old fart, 4,800 to 5,200 yards is just about right. Any longer, and it’s nothing but driver followed by three- or five-wood, which makes for a long day. In our group, about 50% play from the gold or senior tees, and the other 50% from the red or forward tees. We use a modified Stableford scoring system, and each player has a "quota" based on the average of their last six rounds. We like to remind ourselves—seeing as we were all has-beens who never were—that we play for fun. That said, a few still think they’re qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open. With that said, what yardages does everyone play?

^^^ Have you considered using the Tee-It-Forward chart? Depending on your distance off the tee, you might be using it already.

5th tee at The Maplewood Golf Course in Bethlehem, NH taken a couple weeks ago. Note the snow capped White Mountains about 6 miles away as the crow flies. Maplewood is a Donald Ross course featuring tricky greens and a unique par 6 hole (619 yds, 641 yds and 656 yds from green, white and blue tees, respectively).

Has anyone gotten golf lessons at a Golf-Tec location? What's your experience?

  • On Mondays I play gold 5658 yds or gold/red hybrids 5222 yds.
  • On Wednesdays we travel and shoot for whatever tees are closest to 5500 yds. When I find myself at 6000 yds or more it’s a grind.
  • On Friday I play golds 5658 yds.
  • Occasionally (4 times so far this year) I’ll play our senior league on Wednesday or Fridays, they’re on reds 4895 yds. Kinda fun to have short approach shots and reach most par 5’s in 2 - what’s better than an eagle (2 this year so far). Over 80 yo have the option to play green “super seniors” at 4199 yds.

At my home (membership) course the gold "senior" tees are 5200. At two other courses I play about once a month the "senior" tees are about 5600 and 5800. Interestingly, between those 2 courses I do better on the longer one. I think it has more hole layouts better suited to my left-handed fade drives.

There’s also a caveat when it comes to yardages: 5,600 yards on an 84-degree day with a dry course plays shorter than 4,800 yards on a damp course in 50-degree weather. Just saying, weather conditions can make a heck of a difference on how the ball flies and rolls. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

68 here, I play from as close to 6000 yards as possible. Will go under before over. If the guys I play with play closer, I'll move up. My best round ever of 73 came from 5400 yards.

The whites at a couple of courses we play are 6200 - 6300 yards, that's about as long as I'd care to play. 6000 is about right.

Our local "feel good" course that's wide and flat and only has a few bunkers is 5600 yards, that's a bit too short.

I did. Good and bad. I bought a 3 month package. 10 lessons (1/2 hours each) and 90 minutes of using the bay with a monitor. I liked the ability to go for 90 minutes per week and use the golf monitor. I thought the lessons left a bit to be desired. That may have been the instructor but I didn’t think the value was there on that part. In a nutshell, it was a work on one thing at a time program. After ten lessons (just focused on driver), I did hit better but I thought a few of the concepts could have been combined so that I could have progressed further.

Subsequently, I’ve learned that they sell just bay time. Maybe you should just buy that and see how you like it.

Overall, I thought it was too expensive for what I got out of it but there was improvement so not a total loss.

Looks like you've been playing some nice courses but hard to tell with just a photo. I think most here would be appreciative of a short review, location, course condition, hard or easy, worth the money or not, too slow, must play or avoid.......
the photos are ones i took when playing at various times. i couldn't speak to current conditions on many of them but can add some comments from when i did play them. i would say all were worth the money at the time. play times vary for each location so hard to nail that one currently as well. i can say Arizona courses are best right after overseeding IMO (typically mid September through Mid October overseeding finishes) and the Northeast courses are probably best early September once August heat is over but fall foilage has not fallen yet and are the most colorful while still being full. Grass is very different in each of those areas as well. The most slow plays i have run into are on County Courses. i wouldn't personally recommend avoiding any course for the first time. past that maybe come County ones just because of slow play. Just thought everyone might like a real picture from each of the courses as a reference point in case they are ever in the area and are considering places to play. i'll try to add some comments on each as i post them. thanks.

NJ, Atlantic City Golf Club
This one has gone back and forth from private to public back to private. i played when it was public.
the term 'birdie' was created on this course back in early 1900's.
relatively flat track with plenty of water obstacles.
backs up to some marshes so there is usually high fescue along the edges.
overall a nice course to play if you get a chance. 6500yrds, course rating 72.3, slope 133.
about 30 min outside of Atlantic City proper.
there are some old famous names on the original lockers.
4 par 4's on the front 9 so it can be a bit brutal for some.

Looks like Oakmont is eating the pros' lunch during the first two days of the tournament. I'd say even par might be good enough to win it this weekend. What say you?

Agreed. Fascinating to watch, though I feel for them. Has to be mentally exhausting to deal with so many hazards like 5” rough, huge perilous greens, deep well placed by bunkers - McIlroy, Lowry, Thomas, Aberg, Fleetwood, Rose, others. Even Scheffler looked angry on the range after his second round and he’s “only” +4. However I enjoyed watching DeChambeau implode.

Looks like weather could make it even worse this weekend. Hope it doesn’t ruin the tournament.

My home course is not extremely tight aside from a couple holes, but it so happens the “second cut” on my home course is not maintained. It naturally thins out in Winter and they cut it all down at the beginning of Spring but then let it go for the year. Summer and Fall are brutal. We rarely even look for our balls in the second cut as finding balls is highly unlikely and you probably can’t hit it anyway.

I love watching them struggle. I don’t wish them ill but I do like seeing them be challenged. I wonder if the course causes them to play a little more conservatively. At their level, they should be able to keep it on the fairway if they back off just a bit. As a duffer, that’s how I have to play. Giving up some yardage for safety helps a lot. Though at that level, that may just not be possible and still have any chance of winning.

I've always thought their normal shot was already backed off a bit to give them maximum control.

Interesting, I’ve never thought that. I figured a that level and for that amount of money, they’re mostly going for it on every shot.

Should be an interesting final round today. I’ll be happy for Spain, Burns, Scott or Hovland - no favorites. That assumes no one else factors in to win, but we’ll see.

Rooting for Scott, Hovland and Spaun, in that order. However, Burns will probably win it.

Same here, rooting for Adam. I'm almost to the point where I don't think Oakmont would be a fun course to play, at least the way it is set up for the Open. The average hacker couldn't break 120 on that track.

At least the greens are not as crazy as Erin Hills. If they cut the rough down and slow the greens down, which courses typically do when not preparing for tournament, I think Oakmont isn't that bad.

I think Bryson said an 18 handicap would shoot 200 on this course with the way it is set up.
