Golf Talk Tuesdays - 2021

We can golf 365 days a year where we live. However in winter we go to places that are 5 to 10 degrees warmer than where we live to golf. I like cold temp but my husband prefers warmer temp so we go away to golf. The short answer is that we golf 4 to 5 times a week 52 weeks a year.

Interesting news with the PGA Tour allowing 4 LIV golfers (recent major winners) to rejoin the PGA Tour immediately but with some financial penalties, the offer is only good until 2 February. Brooks Koepka has a accepted and will start playing in a couple weeks, not sure who will be next, maybe Bryson D. LIV will have likely have to put a big re-signing offer on the table in the next two weeks to keep Bryson from jumping ship. Jon Rahm has too much money left on his contract so I would be surprised if he accepted the offer.

Anyone else able to get out and play during the winter? We’re having some spectacular golf weather here in DFW!
Generally, I put the clubs up before Thanksgiving here in Michigan. However, I have golfed in every month here except February. There are a couple courses that are open all year and if the weather's good for a long enough spell, we'll get out. Of course, the course is in rough shape, but it's still fun. This year, the weather hasn't provided any opportunity to do any winter golf.

I might be crazier than most :) . My winter golfing criteria is 40 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, sunny or partly sunny, no snow on the ground, and no wind. I am very comfortable walking the course in that weather. Early January in the Mid-Atlantic has been relatively mild and dry. I played 2 rounds last week (87 and 88, which are good scores for me), and will play at least 1 round this week.

Playing today here in Chattanooga, forecast is high of ~60, sunny, light winds. Will be my second round of the year. My biggest gripe is not having any green grass to hit off of and my short game suffers, small price to pay for playing in January.

It was just a matter of time! The players that are going to be the most p^ssed off about this are the ones that had the opportunity to make BIG, BIG money with LIV and turned it all down to stay loyal to the PGA tour. Rory, JT, Speith, Scheffler, etc..........

Rory said he never got an offer. Hideki was the one who received a big LiV offer.

Rory and Tiger passed up the most money not going to LIV and they are both on board with the decision to let the LIV players back, Scheffler said he is fine with it, not sure how the others feel. There was some concern that a LIV player coming back would knock off someone who earned their way on tour but they said that won't happen.

While 40° might be pushing the limit, especially if that’s the high for the day, I’ll definitely golf when in the 40s, if sunny with no wind. Interestingly, my personal best round was one of those days. I wasn’t even expecting to play, but was hitting into my net in the backyard. I was hitting well and sun was so bright, it actually felt warm. Walked onto the course and shot a 73.

Of course it’s not much different over here in Franklin. Shorts one day, then greens covered for frost two days later. No golf here until next Wednesday.

Just south of Nashville. Our group of crazies occasionally plays in high 30s if it’s sunny and no wind. Several of us are walkers, too. If you walk much, the MGI remote carts are exceptional.

I walk 90% of the time and have a Caddytek push cart. Whenever we’re playing a hilly course, I long for a motorized cart. But every time I consider buying one, I talk myself out of it. One of these days…..

I’m planning on getting an electric push cart this year. I walk 90% of the time and from what I hear the difference in having your hands free to walk normally is great. And of course not having to push your cart up hills. I’m leaning towards a cart that has the follow feature, and have read several good reviews about the Anglo. Anyone have experience with this cart?

After a few years with a remote cart, I wouldn’t go with one that follows me. There are times when you are walking that it would be better if the cart doesn’t follow. Check out the MGI Navigator with GPS. It’s a great cart.

I bought my MGI Zip Navigator AT in Jan 2021, never regretted it for a minute. Costco has them with all the options on sale for $300-400 off several times a year, that's when I bought. It is a little less physically taxing than a push cart, and it's nice to have hands free as you walk 6-7 miles. Highly recommended. And I would not be without the retractable seat option, it is nice to get off your feet every once in a while, especially on rounds you're forced to wait by players ahead.

I agree the guys I know with the follow feature aren't sold on the idea. A handheld remote is all you need IMO. It's nice to be able to walk onto a green while sending your cart to the side toward the next hole, or any number of other locations while you're playing.

Hopefully it won’t be long until there’s a smart cart you can talk to, with the course layout programmed in. So when you’re 150 yards out from the ninth green and stick one to eight feet, you can grab your putter and tell the cart to pick up two beers at the turn and meet you at the 10th tee box. We all know this is the logical next evolutionary step to improving your game.

We have a game every Wednesday with the ladies group at our club (about 80+ golfers but usually about 20+ golfers play in the winter/Feb). This week's game was 4 clubs and a putter. I dreaded playing this week because I finished in the last place last year, with a +24 net. Ouch. Anyway, I won it this year, played to my handicap at net even par. Golf is a strange game.

100%. I think that’s the attraction.

We’re finally getting back out tomorrow, as temps will get into the low 60s after a week of sub freezing weather. There’s still snow in shady spots, but hopefully that melts off today.

I haven’t hit a ball in a couple of weeks, so tomorrow might be an adventure. Regardless, it will be good to be back out on the course.

Once a year, our league (of VERY bad golfers) would play a "fun round" with some restriction or other, similar to your example. We played, I think, 2 clubs and a putter. Many people did better than their average, presumably because they were not slicing a driver into the woods on every other hole.

It is freezing here in CT with snow/ice on the ground so golf is a ways away. However, Sunday Golf recently had a mystery box sale and I ordered one of their Ranger bags. You can't choose color - you just get what they send you, but at like 50% off. It came yesterday - white with black trim. Looks great. I was worried that I would get a camo bag or something. :)

That’s awesome! I bought a Sun Mountain bag a couple of years ago that was almost 50% off because it was a Jackie Robinson commemorative bag. I guess it wasn’t a hot seller and I’m a function over form kinda guy.

Our Sunday 9-hole league often plays a 4-club scramble or 7 on 7 where on the 7th hole par 3 the only club that you can use is a 7-iron. Also, silly things like tee it up anywhere (even in a bunker). All for fun.
